I know, unclench this fist, calm down.
But we're forgetting this console is almost 20 Years old, the PSN servers also won't be for around much longer. That to me screams retro, It's old enough to get a drivers license and go to college.

It was a catalyst for modernizing the current gaming industry yes, and it still has this "modern" feel in every release but this alone isn't enough for not to classify it as retro. I don't know if you haven't noticed, but more and more websites now host PS3 ISO files. Albeit your internet connection is decent enough to make it viable, and RPSC3 as it stands today is excellent an a very, very fast emulator with rapid progression.

I always interpreted "retro" in relation to downloading roms off the internet as "whatever doesn't piss off the major game corporations so much that they want to sue and bring hell down whoever was providing said roms."

To me personally: yeah, PS3 is retro now. I was young and fit when that thing came out.

for me its not retro since the games has mutch modern feel to it
its a old consol but retro for me are ps2 and older

but its true the ps3 is a old consol and therfore retro its just that the games on ps3 do not feel like retro games

You're welcome to think that, but it is not a retro console. There is nothing retrograde about the way games were made on the console, budgets and team size, technology and on and on. Genres haven't seen the growth and innovation they did. There is more to retro than an arbitrary release date.

Just nuts to think the PS3 has been out for almost 20 years. Its still a high quality system with some real gems. I always worry about if the PS3 controllers stop holding a charge. Not sure how easy/hard it is to replace batteries on them.

Always has been.

my personal Retro definition:
if you cannot use the original game-media it was delivered
in a modern system of the same company anymore,
then it must be retro

My soul hurts.
It doesn’t qualify for me, but it does for some people and I can’t really fight them on that.

As for the good news, the PS3 fandom is more active than ever! A lot of refugees from the “burned by PS4/5” camp. As the community continues, I’ve never seen a console fandom for a Sony system that is as dedicated! There’s something about the allure of it being this “ultimate machine” that makes people want to delve into it even now. Still a useful multimedia unit, if you take that route! And a modded one makes a mighty fine emulator👀

I usually play racing games on it nowadays (Ridge Racer 7 looks GORGEOUS and MotorStorm is like nothing else. Totally recommend both!), but I need to hop back into Ratchet and Clank Future soon. I’m more a fan of the early days of the system. I have a Super Slim, but I want to mod it to have as close to an older OS as possible, at least aesthetically. I’ve been meaning to find some early titles I’m interested in, but I need to play through other games I have and love first!

And, again, it’s such a useful piece of kit. While I wait for my region free mod solution for my PS1, my PS3 is functioning as a pseudo-Japanese PS1. It also has a hard drive full of banger old YouTube videos and some of my favorite albums. Thank you, PS3!

Correct :) Sorry zoomers, that's simply how the stars aligned. Sucks!
I’m honestly shocked more people haven’t gone back to 360! I know PS3 was more popular worldwide, but I didn’t even know it existed as a kid. To a younger me, gaming was this:
1. Everybody has a 360 except for me.
2. Everybody owns a Wii… that has been rotting in their entertainment center for years and is covered in dust
3. What the heck is a PS3?
4. PC is for rich people. We have Windows Vista.
5. Everybody has a DS. But they don’t have Pokémon Black. *slams desk in anger*
6. What the heck is a PSP?

Around my neighborhood as a YOUNG kid, this was how it was.

We're going to have to find new terms to differentiate old retro systems and new retro systems.
Because if we keep trying to slot SNES and PS3 in the same category of retro, no one is going to agree on anything.

Uhhhh…
Old school and New School?

Sixth Gen is New School. That’s when the modern ways of thinking about games really takes a foothold. There’s crossover, as there always is, but I think it fits. Dreamcast is the first little TASTE of New School gaming, which is a promise executed on as the generation progressed.

I mean the same could be said about atari games and n64 games but they seem to get lumped in there together. The Atari 2600 came out in 1977. The n64 came out in 1996, the ps3 came out in 2007. There is almost as much time between the Atari and the n64 as there is between the present year and the ps3. There's only 11 years between the n64 and ps3.

Thinking back, when I was a tween I got my GBA. Most of you know that GBA was home to a lot of SNES ports. When I played them, I felt the SNES was archaic already. Now, that doesn't change the fact that these games fit right in on a handheld but when a handheld is nearly on par with your home console, it's hard NOT to consider it retro.

The line is less clearly defined nowadays. We don't have an obvious gap, like the 3D revolution, to separate the eras of gaming. The confusion comes from the fact that there haven't been many significant changes to gaming since the 6th generation of consoles. It's all just been increases in quality (not often in the gameplay department).

That being said, I think today the bar for what is considered retro, in gaming, is much higher. To me, from the 7th gen on is still the same generation.

I consider any console more than 10 years old to be retro so PS3 has been retro for a long time already. Switch 1 will be too in 2 more years.

Yeah it feels retro to me having owned 3 of the different models only one i havent owned is the completely backwards compatible PS1/PS2 model which would be great but it dosent have a great shelf life.

I can't imagine having a strong opinion over this at all. I don't think it's retro but I don't really see how that would matter to.. anyone? Why would I care if you think it is retro? Why would you care if I don't?
Maybe I'm just being silly but I think it's kinda weird how the whole word "retro" is used in gaming btw. Usually (or even literally), in cultural context it's slapped on recreations of older things and vintage is the word for old junk but for gaming it's all just retro. It means just nothing. It means whatever you want it to mean.

"Retro" isn't about age necessarily, its specifically about a style of doing things that grew outdated, or simply fell in disuse. The entire industry still follows design conventions set on the PS2 era, so we cannot objectively call the PS2 retro, let alone the PS3.

Edit: Tho, there are things from the ps2 era that are objectively retro. CTRs, AV cables, 480p Resolution, cabled controllers, memory cards... The games themselves tho, that's a harder discussion.
