The reason is that it's the only Musou game—and perhaps the only game in all of gaming genres—to feature a fantasy-based 'single extraction' game mode (referring to Gauntlet Mode).

While the fantasy-based extraction game Dark and Darker has since been released, that game and its similar titles have been severely marred by various unfortunate controversies. In comparison, Warriors Orochi 3 is incredibly pioneering and special.

It is a great loss and a shame that the Nintendo Switch version of such a unique masterpiece is exclusively for the domestic Japanese market.

I played Orochi 3 quite a bit, but never actually tried that gauntlet mode
Dunno about switch version but game also on steam and you can run it on very weak pc too

Undoubtedly my favorite musou, no questions asked, and second favorite game of the ps3 era. Was really fun.

I sunk hundreds of hours into Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate. It's a tossup between that and Dynasty Warriors 8 for my favorite musou game. Despite this I've somehow never tried the Gauntlet mode. I didn't even really understand what it was about. Was too busy doing everything available in Story Mode. :loldog

My favorite musou games are Dynasty Warriors 5 (there's some cool things about PS2 era Dynasty Warriors games that you don't see anymore in modern musou games) and Fire Emblem Warriors (which is the best of the modern musou games I have played). Fire Emblem Warriors actually feels a little bit like older Dynasty Warriors games.

Dynasty Warriors 8 would be my third choice. It doesn't have all of the charm of older DW games like DW 5, but it is the best modern Dynasty Warriors game.

I've never played 5 but I know it's a fan favorite. What kind of cool things did it have that we don't see in modern titles, if you don't mind me asking?

Fire Emblem Warriors is the best spinoff by far. The only mark against it is the clone characters. Not enough to detract from the experience but it would've been damn near perfect if they'd added unique movesets.

Your army mattered in old DW games. In modern musou games you are a one man killing machine and your army is irrelevant. That's really the biggest difference to me. In old games I was worrying about how my troops were doing in different parts of the map, I never ventured out too much on my own, I actually care about morale, etc, etc. Things mattered more too, like killing an officer would lead to all of his generals and troops retreating from the map. Triggering the right events in battle was crucial, if you didn't want some fire attack or super powered enemy officer wiping out your army

Modern musou games have been watered down a bit. They are still fun though

Ahhh I get what you mean. I played Samurai Warriors 1 & 2 back in the day. Screw up objectives and you're quickly fighting an uphill battle. They really upped the "1 vs 1000" aspect in modern games. It makes for nice mindless fun but sometimes you want something a little deeper. Thanks for sharing!

That being said I still babysit my army in modern games. Maybe I picked that habit up from playing the older games. Acquired paranoia. :loldog
