VITA The PS Vita

I still have my old blue vita modded with a few games. I may have to mod it again since im going to purchase bigger memory. Freedom Wars, Wipeout 2048 AND Persona 4 Golden are my favorites.

If Sony had put more effort into it, we would certainly have had more PSPs by now. But as always, when something doesn't sell well, it quickly gets thrown into the trash.

I don't know. When the Vita came out Sony was in a precarious situation. They probably decided they would rather support the platform they had more chances to win at. The 3DS ultimately shipped fewer units than the PSP had in its day. From one generation to the other, the demand for dedicated gaming handhelds declined.

I wish the vita had done better. I also wish the vita3k emulator was doing better. Development seems to have lulled.

Getting into JRPGs and other Japanese games helped deepen my appreciation for the Vita. In addition to the homebrew ports such as Hollow Knight, GTA Trilogy, and The World Ends With You, all the games I felt were missing from the Vita's library had been filled. With DS emulation looking fairly decent, I'm looking forward to playing Kingdom Hearts Re:coded on my favorite handheld.

The PlayStation Portable (Model 1000) already felt bulky and heavy for its time.

At that point I would rather have a good resolution but also a good weight and autonomy time over raw power.

I'm getting my 3rd Vita soon and it'll be my first 2000 model! Torn on which of these colors to go with. I kind of like the tasteful contrast of the black sticks and screen outline on the 2nd one, but the all white is just so clean!

Any opinions?

I'm partial to the clean look of the all white.

The base Switch model was already quite big by itself.

The SteamDeck, Rog Ally and Switch 2 are going too far...

You kind of have to laugh a bit at the idea of the Steam Deck being a "handheld". I think the Switch 1 was fine because it's thin and light, much like the 3ds models. It's not pocket friendly though or ergonomically friendly.

Retroid Pocket 5s are a really good size for a handheld. Odin2 Portal is on the larger side of things but still not the huge thing that a Steam Deck is. With a good grip, the RP 5 and Odin2 Portal are super comfortable to hold. They can't be beat by any other handheld I've had.

I feel like the Vita came out at the wrong time.

Dedicated handheld gaming consoles were becoming a thing of the past thanks to the demand being almost completely soaked up by mobile gaming. The 3DS also failed to sell all that well, and it's not a shock that we've seen a lot of the 3DS-era getting re-released on the Switch.

I love my Vita, and I plan to keep it operating as long as it humanly possible, but I also acknowledge that it'll never get the sort of Software support it needs to live up to its full potential.

When someone I knew got a SteamDeck and I held it for the first time, the thought of it being a 'handheld' was confusing as, like you, I think of a Vita, or a 3ds as a handheld. Yes, the Steam Deck is a 'handheld' I guess in theory but holy heck I wouldn't be taking it around outside of a home because it really isn't pocket friendly and is a bit on the heavier side (at least for me).

The RP5 is comfy to hold for me (no grip required) but I've heard many comment that a grip is a game-changer for them. That device is certainly a handheld and thankfully a lot lighter/pocketable. The Flip2 is nice as well but the hinge crack was/is a bit of a disappointment (thankfully Retroid replaced the cracked unit).

Personally I am not keen on vita's practical design at all.
It's much heavier then PSP, around 1/3 larger. But for some reason the buttons are placed much higher and are only half as big in size. start/select buttons are so small I have to use nails to press them. And as if it wasn't annoying enough, many games use back-pad as a tool for the missing r2/l2 bumpers.
It's as if the whole thing was designed with a skeleton in mind, with a very long but very thin fingertips. If I had to descibe it, then it's like holding a controller with missing hand grips.

It's not that much heavier than the PSP. The original Vita model is slightly lighter than the original PSP model and the slim Vita is only about an ounce heavier than the 2000 and 3000 PSP models. I tend to like my handhelds with a bit of heft to them though so that's my bias for sure. Definitely agree on the buttons being a bit too small though. I like how they feel in terms of texture and the act of pressing them, but if they were just the tiniest bit bigger it would help some games - particularly fighting games - feel just that much nicer.

Nintendo was onto something when they made the New 3DS model's ZR and ZL triggers just be tinier buttons that sat next to the traditional L and R triggers. I feel like the Vita could have really benefitted from having that design whilst ditching the back touchpad entirely (though I'd miss Tearaway's gimmicks specifically). Sure it would have still been awkward in its own way, but so is pressing the back touch pad.

I remember when the Vita came out but I couldn't get one till a few years later. I had fun with a few games like Senran Kagura and Uncharted Golden Abyss.

I put it down for a while then heard you could hack it through something called Henkaku. A modded Vita is like a PSP on steroids and its a great piece of kit to have. SD2vita is a life saver as the proprietary memory cards cost way too much now for my tastes. I have a 64gb in there iirc but I'd like to go higher later on.

Anyway, I don't use it as much as I should but I recommend modding it if you still have one.

Watched a recent Digital Foundry video and John Linneman mentioned a surge in demand for Vita handheld in Japan. I've seen it slowly creeping up in price over in the West too, so if you happen to see one for cheap now don't hesitate to grab it!

I remember reading on youtube comments about a guy who played his steamdeck on a cafe and the waitress thought that he was controlling a drone from inside, which is pretty funny.

This makes me realize when the switch came out I thought the size is a problem if i wanted to take it outside as compared to 3ds or psp which is much smaller. Anything bigger than the switch lite is not going to be my go-to handheld gaming device.
