Welcome back, ladies and germs, to The Officially Unofficial RGT Forums Best of the Best Game List! Second verse, same as the first, this time we're covering the NES's little brother, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System! We've got 10 games voted and nominated by viewers such as you 🫵so now it's time to see which one of them can top this chart!
Officially UnofficialRGTForumsBestoftheBestGameCoverSNES.jpg

The competition for nominations was fierce, and out of all 1749 games for the system, around 30 were nominated but only 10 of which could make it to the final round to see who are the 10 best and brightest for for the system! And it really shows the disparity of people's passion between the 8-bit and 16-bit era, since we have quite a few more of the usual suspects this time, with only one real surprise contender! Earthbound is making a return to the podium after it's respectable 6th place showing on the NES list, with Megaman, Link and Samus finally making an appearance after being absent the last time around. Significantly less Konami to be seen for this portion of the competition as well, which dominated the last list with Contra and Castlevania. Surprisingly, while far more RPGs were nominated for this round, there's only 1 more on here than last time (I expect later lists on the Playstation will be an absolute slaughter house in that regard!). So like always, get ready to vote, Vote, VOTE, VOTE VOTE!

Note: I had to fudge the vote for Demon's Crest in order to break a 4 way tie. Yoshi's Island, Secret of Mana, and Final Fantasy V all had 6 votes, but I was able to knock back Yoshi's Island and FFV because Super Mario World and FFVI already had double digit votes (SMW had 15 and FFVI had 10) so I simply had the more popular picks absorb them because they were part of the same franchise. This lead to a clash between Demon's Crest and Mana, but by counting one of @Sanomoe 's ::winkfelix(which are normally not counted) and @Pinballbuzzbro's ...uh..."nomination" of it (they 'seconded' it, but didn't technically vote for it, as their nomination was for TMNTIV) I managed to squeak out 7 votes for Demon's Crest without having to add any votes myself (this tied it with DKC2, which was the only other game to have 7 votes) and put it in the running of the top 10. I understand if this may be disappointing to everyone (especially since Demon's Crest was my personal nomination, so this reeks of neptoism, even if I didn't vote for it myself). But by the end, it was my call to make, and I thought this was the most legitimate option.

I've played many of these games, but only sat down to beat one of them - Let's go Donkey Kong Country 2!
Weird, I could've sword you'd pick FFVI since you nominated to fourth.

But thanks for stopping by. I ended up making a huge snafu earlier and there's an identical thread in the SNES section that doesn't have poll on it. I'm not trying to spam, just made a mistake.

Ya know what? I actually HAVE beaten FFVI as well, but I feel like IV is a tighter experience, and DKC2 even more so! So I'm sticking with it.

And as for the identical thread sans poll, I'll delete it for you. :]

I've gone with LoZ: Link to the Past because it's the only SNES game on this list that I've actually beaten all the way through.
The SNES is a pretty sizable gap in my knowledge base tbh. Except for Assaults Suit Vulkan. I played that fucker to deeeeeath.

I feel this, and it makes me worried about the later lists where I'll have absolutely no clue about what I'm doing, and I'm sure other users are also gonna blank on specific eras of hardware. I imagine that's why the NES list was kinda dry. That, and because I was just starting out and had no hype to carry me.

SNES got a really good response, and I think it's one the older console general public is most aware of, aside from the Genesis. But in order to get to the Genesis, we're gonna have to do the Master System, and I don't even think anybody gives two shits about it aside from maybe Alex Kidd or one of the Sonic games.

It's also a reason I skipped Gameboy (for now) since I'm sure the GBA is going to get a lot of attention, aside from more notable titles like Link's Awakening or Wario Land 3, I'm not sure there's quite as much enthusiasm for the original GB/GBC library. I'm gonna have to put a strict regulation on Pokemon games, that's going to be a blood bath.

Playstation stuff is gonna be pretty lit, especially the PS1/PS2 stuff.

Easiest vote of my life.
Terranigma is just... So special to me.

The story, the art style, the music
No wonder it's my favorite videogame, like, out of everything.
it's such a shame it never came out in America, because if it did, it probably would've had the same appreciation as the game Quintet made before (Illusion of Gaia).

Seriously, Quintet made peak and no one talks about them as much as it should
(They made ActRaiser and Illusion of Gaia, for crying out loud lol), only mentioning Enix, as they were the ones that localized the games, but definitely did not work on them.

From Software used to have this problem before they got popular, as Activion used to slap their name on Lost Kingdoms and most of the Armoured Core games like they owned it.

Awww, my boy SoE didn't make it :(

Eh, the surviving candidates were all god-tier anyway.
I am sorry, fren. Evermore was a favourite of mine as well, but we both know Secret of Mana is the more well known and less niche of the two.

I had to look up what you meant, since I'm pretty sure Terranigma did come out an English, but I was surprised to learn it was just a European release. Suppose that's what I get for being raised on Emulators as a kid.

Man, those results going kinda wild at the moment I'm voting... Still no votes for SMW, tho almost 30 peeps been here already.

In my heart of hearts, I want it to stay that way. It was already pretty wild when Terranigma was leading the pack, but SMW in last? Holy shit! That would be a screwjob that would end the Hart Foundation!

But all that really matters is that I get a solid consensus among the forum users. The entire purpose of this project was that the Top 10 lists featured in various magazines were rather predictable and blase, only taking the most well known entries on the system (several lists also featured the same franchise 3-4 times).

And with the entire world of games at our disposal here via The Repo, the audience here is not limited to just what they remembered playing as kids or what was popular on the system. Anything is game.

I'm very excited to see what people will pick for the upcoming lists, as I predict Playstation is going to be a bloodbath...

Yee, I gotchu. But that's still one of the most influential games for the development of romhacking and modding scenes, other than being marketed alongside the console. That is wild.

Tho, I myself didn't pick too :p

Edit: we're not even considering its replayability per se and how this leads to the speedrunning culture.

Edit again: changed my vote from EB, in solidarity. But that's painful.

It’s pretty neat seeing this running alongside the nostalgia society stuff.

I have the most hours on Final Fantasy VI. Chrono Trigger would be my first but... I just can't do it to the greatest Final Fantasy game ever created.

Dog where's Breath of fire?
Neither BoF 1 nor 2 were nominated sadly. I suspect BoF 3 or 4 is going to show up for the playstation nominations. and you are more than welcome to put your 2 cents in for those.

Maybe the lack of votes for Super Mario World are from contrarianism or taking it for granted? The other games have had a bigger impact on me, but SMW is amazing and I'm sure I take it for granted. Like, of course it's great and appreciated and people like it, why would I need to vote for it? It's pretty remarkable that there hasn't really been a bad mainline Mario game. Plenty of mediocre spin-offs and sports games, but the main games always deliver.

I voted for FFVI. Great game, great story and villain, and the open-ish nature of the second half of the game is so cool.

20 minutes left! It's down to the wire, a tie for first place between Earthbound and Chrono Trigger!!! Who will win!??
