The Mega JRPG thread.

Persona 3 Portable is pretty good, even though is a bit slow with exp. progression.
7th dragon for PSP is great, as I already said in a quoted comment, become boring while progressing through the story because you just the same things. Also I like Trails of Cold Steel.
I found myself at ease with ARPG more than JRPG, more action, less boring.

like Trails of Cold Steel.
I used to like Kiseki until I played the Crossbell games. Cold Steel IV was so bad it made me abandon the franchise.
For me it's The Third>First Chapter>Second Chapter>Cold Steel II>Azure>Cold Steel I>Zero>Cold Steel III>Cold Steel IV

In countless threads here, I can’t see much of Star Ocean games appreciation.
I actually started really to love JRPGs after getting into first SuperFamicom fan translated title.

Mixed story with branching decisions and sudden turn outs, characters recruitment, private actions and affection scores, skill points, variety of loot, equipment customisation, items creation, puzzles and mini-quests, fast pacing battles, there is certainly more than meets the eye.

I recently got Okage on the PSN store and finished it! Great game! Had a ton of fun playing it. I wish I could play Dark Cloud, but I'm completely broke. One day.

Anyone tried World of Final Fantasy? Finished it last year, and even though I wasn't a fan of the chibi characters, I still really enjoyed the story, music, and turn-based battles. Plus Enna Kros is funny.

yeah, i think all i have left to do is beat the super boss. it's like playing pokemon but with your whole team ready to fight all at once. it would be interesting to see pokemon do that as well.

Quick Question:
What's your favorite JRPGs that were never released outside Japan?
Sol Trigger on the PSP, sadly the Fan translation is incomplet, for games with a complet fan translation, I would have a hard time but it's between the 7th dragon 2020 or Tales of Rebirth

Any "Tales" games fans?
Tales is my least favorite mainstream JRPG series along with Dragon quest , but I loved the newly translated Tales of Rebirth did anyone else here played it?

I'm not sure why most indie RPGS are as shitty as they are. Just copy Chrono Trigger's pacing and make an half-way decent combat system and your game will sell like hotcakes.
I think that's because a lot of indie game devs don't undertand what makes games good outside of a superfical level, plus they generally make games based on what they played on their childhood, which for most people is limited for a few of the most popular JRPG of the era.

I think this is a good opportunity for me to mention as a big turn based buff, I’m quite pessimistic about the future. I’ve tried a couple of indie rpgs and they weren’t anything to write home about. I like indie gaming but it’s becoming harder to feel impressed by recycled ideas with little originality. Anyone got good rpgs in mind?
Have you played the 2 recent SaGa games , Scarlet grace and emerald beyond ?

They have in my opinion some of the best turn based combat in any JRPG

The only "recent" Saga game i have played, is the Remaster of Frontier tbh.

Is this sentence lacking some context?
Perhaps it means playing it on the Xbone/series

Never Owned, always on the lookout for it cause i want to play it. I really hope it gets a gog.com or steam version at some point
There's always emulation, fully playable:

The Suikoden I&II remaster been a pretty good nostalgia trip, I've been blaring Rage Against the Machine and Nine Inch Nails to really complete the mood.

They don't offer a really substantial difference from the originals, but the bugfixes are welcome. There's a bit more QoL in the first game than the second, but it's the sort of thing that QA really should have caught back in the 90's to begin with.

(For instance, every time a character joins your party for a scripted battle, they get automatically assigned to the back row. There's multiple instances where a short-ranged fighter joins the team to be *completely* useless, hiding behind your archers.)

What are your thoughts on the redone visuals? I've seen a lot of hub-bub surrounding them, but I've never so much as touched a Suikoden game – do you feel that they significantly change the game's style from the original?

To my eye, it's less offensive than simply up-scaling the old assets. The new visuals were made to mimic the original, and everything matches up pretty closely to the old games. After awhile, I've simply stopped noticing the difference between the old and new.

That might not be a ringing endorsement, but at least it isn't jarring. (I might be less perceptive of this sort of thing, but I *have* played the originals an unhealthy number of times.)

If anything, I'm apprehensive to recommend the remaster because they're so similar to their source. Everyone here emulates (probably), and fifty bucks - or y'alls local currency - is pretty steep for an experience you could get for free on here.

Edit: Forgot I've been taking screenshots, soooooo

The second game generally looks better than the first as is, even on the PSX the sprites were a huge improvement. There's also a lot more effort in the visual story-telling in the sequel as well, particularly in the opening hours of the game.

If there's a particular change that might rankle, it's the portraits in the first game. The big-eyed anime style was already present by Suikoden II, but the first game had a different art style. Personally, I'm mixed on the change; some are better, some are worse.

The war battles in both games are probably the worst examples, the sprites were always terrible and the HD backgrounds don't help.

One last random screenshot, I love this freak.
