The Mega JRPG thread.

A few days ago I started a new game of Metal Max just to take a screenshot and share here, then... I ended up deciding to replay it all over again, because why not? I just beat the Mutantdile and got the LAV
What do you think of the other Metal Max games?

I like the Law/Neutral/Chaos morality system and multiple endings. I dislike that it seems like the newer titles have moved away from that, it was one of the features that made the series unique.
I mean I don't mind things like Nocturne but yeah they need to play it straight more.

The aligment system is still there, you must be thinking of either an spinoff or of SMT V Vengeance which still has the alignment system in place it's just that Atlus decided to not make a neutral ending for the new story they added to the re release (Which was a wise choice in my opinion, Neutral has always been too good an option in every SMT game after Strange Journey, so making players have to make an actual difficult choice between Law and Chaos improved the game for me.)

Something i have been wanting to get off my chest:

I feel that the remake of SMT3 Nocturne is too clean, i feel like the PS2 version had a more oppressive and dirty atmosphere, it really does feel that you are in a strange world, and that the world is ending. In the remake it just doesn't feel like that, everything is too clean and neat.

Anyone else felt that?
Yeah it's pretty clear once you play the PS2 version and then play the remaster after you really see how much they butchered the atmosphere of the game on the remaster.
Edit: To elaborate on that a little bit, i do think i exagerrated a bit how bad it looks but it's way too bright compared to how dark and muddy the original felt.

I think it might be easier to list modern remakes that don't botch the atmosphere.

Quistis, Triple Triad and the GF animations are the best aspects of FFVIII. Squall was a fool for turning her down.
The one thing I loved about that game (aside from mommy-aura sensei) was how you could just play cards anywhere:

Some guy: "The world is in danger! If we don't get over there now..."
Squall: "I challenge you to Triple Triad."
Guy: "But, but the safety of the world is..."
Squall: "Decks out, coward!"

Only way to make it better is to let me challenge enemies mid-battle.

Also, this is the only FF I ever wanted a sequel to, but I want it to be mostly TT.

I hear tell that FF9 basically requires you to have played at least 7 and 8 before it to get the full experience. Is that true? I shouldn’t start with that one then, right?
You should be aware of several things from FF1 (largest amount of allusions of any game), FF4, FF6, and FF7 to get some of the bigger references. The other games pre-FF9 also help to further get all the little references.

I loved FF8. The music, characters, weapons, summons, and yes, even the Junction system. Vastly superior to 9 imo.

What do you think of the other Metal Max games?
I liked all the ones I've played, which were 1/Returns, MM2R, MM3 and Metal Saga. I thought about ranking them, but each one has its own positives and negatives so it'd be silly to compare them like that.
I'll just say that: Metal Max 3 has my favorite vehicle roster and storyline while Metal Max 2 has my favorite world to explore.

There are also references to Josef, a FF2 character. Small references to older titles are common in all Final Fantasy games, though. I don't think it is a requirement to enjoy the games.

Each game being its own thing is a good for a series as long as FF.

Unlike the kiseki games... There is no point in me to play more kiseki games cause i hate Trails of Cold Steel.

Speaking of the Trails games, those games get ridiculous amounts of hype in the JRPG community. Are they that good?

Well, the plot of FF9 is heavily based around concepts from FF1, and many things in it don't make perfect sense unless you've played that one. The 4 fiends (who are the exact same ones from FF1) come off as just random monsters if you don't get who they are. And there are other things in the main plot that won't make sense without playing other FF games. The 3 main villains are all variants of villains from the previous games (with a little bit of a previous hero mixed in), and at least one makes no sense at all if you never played an old-school FF before. (Granted, there's still a problem with him, but it at least makes a little more sense with more context.)

Any "Tales" games fans?
My favourite is Tales of Destiny, seconded by Radiant Mythology (1)
I loved all the quirky characters and how they developed. Good memories!
The only ones I've played are Tales of The Abyss and Tales of Innocence.
They're fun.

You can't go wrong with a main line Final Fantasy, fanbase needs to realize there's no need to make them kill each other to up your fav. I mean my all time favorite game is Final Fantasy XIII (The first one by itself although I really love the other 2 too.) It's been over a decade and I'm still figuring things out about the story and writing, gameplay, music, world design. It's WAY ahead of it's time and totally humbled me.

I didn't realize that the COM allies not only base their behavior on the enemy notes (like bar fire is they say "uses powerful fire attacks"), a basic strategy (casting haste on themselves first so they can cast it on allies faster) but they change who they buff and with what based on what class they are (they'll put brave on attackers first and healers last)

And how to move, if you load 3 thunders for Lightning and use all 3, she'll leap back once, but if you load 3, and repeatedly start (triangle button) just the first, she'll keep leaping back and put space between her and the enemies and allies.

I still think that Mwynn was a proto human and Bhunivelze was a robot she made to made find chaos, and it killed her when it seen chaos in her, then millions of years later when the robots made L'Cie (the new humans) they never thought robot were unnatural because they've always been there (they never call them robots in the game) But I still don't get why they had Crystals inside themselves, And why (this is from the sequels which kinda took the story off the rails a bit) Why Bunivelze slept in "Crystal" after he killed Mwynn, unless that was his Focus, but that would mean Focuses were around before the robots?

And I think Vanille has something to do with Etro and Mwynn. Her personality resembles Etro's "foolish" description, her special move is "death' also the final boss Orphan IV is vulnerable to Death, just like if Mwynn was the robots creator she would have that failsafe control over them, like how the Fal'Cie can control L'Cie. It would be awesome if that was like a kill a million years in the making :)

Okay I'll stop now...

Edit: Bunivelze couldn't see the chaos, so maybe it was the idea of the unknown he seen in the humans?

I have only played Tales of Symphonia, i did watch my friend go through Tales of Arise, and we did have fun with it.

Not at all.
It was the ”definitive” FF when it was new because it was slightly more self-referential (FF has always had recurring themes though) than before, but it’s kinda overblown.

I think it’s one of the best to start with because the entire game feels handcrafted with so much love and sincerity.

Once you realize that most of the writers of Final Fantasy (outside of Sakaguchi and Matsuno) are absolute otaku brain morons, you stop worrying about trying to make sense of the lore.
