Hmmm... Interesting theory, but I think I'm still correct on this. Not really. It is somewhat made up word but most commonly it is.
"A tiny fact" or like "A fact about a fact", or a small snippet of something true about some larger topic being discussed.
Something like: "A brief factoid about Metal Gear games is that they are not NES or Famicom games, but MSX games originally." etc. Sometimes it is just a synonym for "A fact" or "A small, factual sidenote relating to this topic."
According to my universal serial bus of knowledges, Factoid means a portable fact... something that is small and can be easily carried in mind... not necessarily very versatile in technical context though.the heck is factoid?![]()

It's a derogatory term for someone who likes facts
It originally meant incorrect information that was being given as fact, but now, because so many people misuse it, it's become the definition of a simple, small fact. Not really. It is somewhat made up word but most commonly it is.

Dunno when this "originally" was, since I never seen the word used in that manner, and I was on internet in time when this would been it's use. Nothing in the word also indicates that meaning in any good way. It is like saying Sprayment means getting covered in toxic substance. The word just does not have good indication for the additional meaning you propose it had. And I am not a judge nor a jury but I have not seen it used this way back in 200X.It originally meant incorrect information that was being given as fact, but now, because so many people misuse it, it's become the definition of a simple, small fact.
The new brave genre mixing metroid and phoenix wright into one very cohesive thrilling brain twisting action adventure puzzling.A factoid is a metroid with facts. Facts.
"A factoid was originally defined to mean a false statement presented as a fact. In colloquial speech, it is often used to mean a true but brief or trivial item of news or information (which can be less ambiguously described as a 'factlet')." -- Wikipedia.Dunno when this "originally" was, since I never seen the word used in that manner, and I was on internet in time when this would been it's use. The word usage is a sign of someone with a limited vocabulary who relies on trendy buzzwords, which often lose their meaning in the process.other night i gone that site and they keep say factoid this factoid that.......
