Hell yeh, if we have a Kamen Rider thread we also need a Sentai thread! Also probably an Ultraman thread, let me go check later.

I've only really watched Power Rangers back in the day when I was a kid, now I'm trying to get into the original Sentai shows too. Been following the current No.1 Sentai Gozyuger and having a lot of fun with it, it's extremely silly but the action scenes are really cool and the plot is actually quite interesting. I also have started the acclaimed Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger but haven't watched too many episodes of it yet.

Absolutely

Please don't turn it into a Power Ranger thread, let's stay in sentai only. Make a PR thread if ya wanna talk about it.

I'm not feeling Number One Sentai Gozyuger, it's not bad but not amazing either.

Anyways, let me honor MY KINGS OF KINGS

I MISS MY KINGS, YOU ARE THE BEST!

*Ahem*
Need to finish BoonBoomger, it is really fun.

Yeah wasn't trying to derail into MMPR, just mentioned that's how I (and probably most other people) got into Sentai.

That's Ousama Sentai King-Ohger. right? Their suits look absolutely SICK and I want to watch that one eventually. Following the same logic we apply to picking a Kamen Rider show: watch the one you think looks the coolest! Maybe after I'm done with the other ones I'm in the middle of.

Sorry, it wasn't directed at you at all, sorry if that sounded this way, wasn't my intention. I was talking in general, really.

And yeah, it is Ohsama Sentai King-ohger! It is really good! Breaks lots of Sentai tropes, it sometimes feels more like Kamen Rider than sentai. And I like how the characters are written. Bunch of young adults burdened with giant responsibility.

Now one of my favorite quotes without context:

Rcules Husty: Do you understand what it means to point a sword at your king? You have just made yourself the world’s enemy!

Gira: That’s fine by me. That “justice” you talked about is stupid! Dull! And revolting! If sacrificing children is supposed to be justice, then I’ll be the evil that crushes that justice! Now fear me and heed my words! I will show no shred of mercy nor restraint, and spare no effort nor intent! The name of your doom... is Gira! The man who’ll become the King of Evil! I... will rule over this entire world!

Don’t be surprised if I told that this is the first Sentai series that I watched.View attachment 84483View attachment 84484

Bioman isn't the first Sentai I watched but it is one of my favorites. Cuz it was the first super sentai shown in the Philippines after a long hiatus. (Technically, the first would be Himitsu Sentai Gorenger I think...rechristened as Star Rangers)

Did you know Bioman almost became the Super Sentai that Power Rangers could have been based on but they switched it to Zyurangers instead? I think I read somewhere the reason was Zyurangers was newer and flashier plus it had dinosaur robots which was more appealing to americans.

Bioman was chosen initially since it was the one the main producer saw.

https://powerrangers.fandom.com/wiki/Bio-Man

I always found it strange that the name of Pink 5 (Kimberly) in the Philippine dub had the same name of the Pink Ranger in the original Power Rangers. Bioman was televised first here before Power Rangers so the Philippine Dubbed Bioman couldn't have copied it. I have a guess the fandom wiki might be incorrect and the producer actually saw the Philippine dub instead which was in English (televised here in the 80's) in which he would have enjoyed it more with no language barrier and possibly took the name of Kimberly from it as well as the name for the Pink Ranger.

Just a guess.

Long hiatus? You mean the Martial Law era right? That was way past my time.

Yup. Thanks to the administration of the dad of the current prez, all the so-called "violent anime" was removed but not all. Questor (the main company that adapted Japanese programs) and the other lesser ones showed a lot of non-violent anime instead like Candy-Candy, Ron-Ron and Nobody's Child. (But some pretty violent ones managed to slip through like Ork the Prehistoric boy) Nothing close to giant robots though and Super Sentai was pretty close to that so I guess they couldn't show those...until...

Candy Candy was pretty good but I digress.

How about Choujuu Sentai Liveman ?

How i met them? a long story ::biggrin

It was late 1980s - early 1990s. In the apartment building where I lived, there was a type of cable TV called "Parabolica" (or "satellite TV" roughly translated, a big dish antenna property of the owners of building. Private cable TV at that time was absurdly expensive and was only available to few people with high incomes). You could find mostly American and Mexican television channels (If you wanted to watch a movie on an American channel, you also learned English because there was no Spanish dubbing or subtitles. And if the movie was shown on a Mexican channel, you could see how much you'd learned)::lol

In late 1991 and early 1992, they began to change those channels, partly due to new regulations on public television in my country and partly because they were also being threatened with legal action (especially by representatives of American movie channels like Cinemax and HBO). They also removed the Mexican channels and replaced them with Venezuelan and American channels, but for Latino audiences. They also began to fill the gaps left behind with Peruvian channels (hence the nickname "perubólica" in my country, given the pun between Peru and Parabólica). On those channels, we knew about series like Jiban, Saint Seiya, Dragon Ball, Captain Tsubasa, and in this case, Liveman. At the beginning of 1992, we had electricity rationing (we were without power for up to 9 hours a day), and it was not unusual for us to have to look for a neighbor who had a portable power generator (back then they sold like hotcakes) in order to watch Liveman. By early 1993, rationing was lifted, and we were happy watching Liveman and discussing the day's episode at school. Liveman was never broadcast on any channel in my country (it wasn't until 1994 that they started airing Power Rangers on Saturday mornings, and at that time, programs considered "violent" weren't allowed on public television. Ironic because a country like Colombia was one of the most violent countries in the world in the 90s).

I remember Liveman fondly; it's a memory from my childhood, especially when I had to do somersaults as a kid to avoid missing the day's episodes.

Just between us. In one episode, they played a song that years later I dedicated to a girlfriend: Jikanyo Tomare by Eikichi Yazawa (it appeared in Act 34).::biggrin

Of course. For Sentai, there are actually a bunch officially licensed sentais you can watch for free on Shout Factory (the category for tokusatsu, is called TokuShoutsu).

Sentai is at 50+ seasons now and KR has a lot too and they don't have all of them but still there's a good dozen+ of full seasons of certain years you can watch there for free. Hope that helps.

Tubi is free and has some of the older Sentai and Kamen Rider shows (but it also has Geats and Zero-One which are newer)
