Back to ST I loved that one episode where Picard suddenly became a member of a primitive society and had a nice life

until you discover that he has just lost consciousness on the deck and was just relieving the memories of a vanished civilisation that didn't want their memory to fade to dust.

What's funny is that I've watched TNG for literal decades and somehow had never seen that one. Really nice and bittersweet. Though still not as nearly emotional in my opinion as "Family" from Season 4

I forgot about FarScape, it was a crazy show. I think that weirdness came from the fact it's Australian and it made is stand out compared to other Space Opera.

Sorry, but Star Wars doesn't count. Star Trek is science fiction, Star Wars is fantasy. It's a spacebound fantasy. It's just as much a fantasy series as The Chronicles of Narnia or the works of Tolkein. Comparing the two is quite frankly dumb.

I think I've read about Space Fantasy and this is a good way to name the genre.

I need to check that one.

On a side note I've always loved those "invading/assimilating" type of species/faction in sci-fi. It's a fairly common trope but there was the Flood, the Cybermen, the Zerg, the Tyranid and many others having that same function. I don't know who started it but I'm glad it became a thing.

I enjoyed TOS, The animated series, TNG, DS9, Voyager and the movies up to First Contact. Didn't really like Enterprise or the JJ Abrams movies very much. I can't stand Scott Bakula. I hated him in Quantum Leap as well. Nemesis and Insurrection were also kind of meh. I can't be bothered to watch any of the new trek stuff though, it all looks like garbage.

I love the theme song too. It's very unconventional given the Trek franchise, but it sums up the show's themes of perseverance and is honestly my second favourite non-Alexander Courage Trek TV theme behind Jerry Goldsmith's theme for Voyager.

As for my favourite theme for a Trek property in general... It has to be another Jerry Goldsmith ditty: The main theme from Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
If you know... You know. It's so good that not only did Goldsmith come back for Star Trek V, First Contact, Insurrection and Nemesis, but after Ron Jones intended theme failed to impress, the people behind Star Trek: The Next Generation decided to use Goldsmith's work as a placeholder-cum-replacement once the show began to air. It is THAT fantastic.

I still like Enterprise's theme.

Yes, it's a complete departure from the usually militaristic, orchestra themes the franchise was know for however Enterprise is set before Starfleet was made and the theme is about how optimistic humanity is about space exploration because they're finally at warp level.

I also love seeing the original Enterprise ship shown as well as the history of the world exploration (akin to space exploration) as well as seeing planes and spacecraft, showcasing our evolution.

Maybe back in the late 90's 2000's people wanted something grittier (since it was the new trend) and something set after in the timeline instead of a prequel...

I don't denounce people's enjoyment of the recent Star Treks, but they seemed to (from what I understand) completely throw out Gene's vision of a utopia.

Maybe this and probably clumsy messages (ST was always in the progressism side but I feel like these were done in a better way) or unneeded changes regarding the lore (I don't understand why Klingons had a different look).

Discovery almost felt like it was a soft reboot or set in its own timeline...

Well tbf, in TOS they literally just had brown face and early TNG Worf looks ROUGH because I guess they were still figuring out how they wanted Klingons to look

I guess you could make the argument too that they still looked very much like an insensitive "fu manchu" caricature like Ming in Flash Gordon in TNG even with the head lumps (but then again, people have been saying for years that Ferenghi are basically insensitive stereotypes of the Jewish community)

I made the same argument when discussing the recent Flash Gordon comic from Mad Cave. Ming looks NOTHING like classic Ming at all and is just a generic as fuck alien

And I want to specify that this is not a blanket statement trying to rationalize insensitivity, but I think they could have found a way to make Ming look more like he did without resulting to racist caricatures

Star Trek is the reason I can understand spoken English. Ages ago I downloaded TOS,TNG,DS9, VOY and ENT but couldn't find any Portuguese subtitles, watched it anyway. But after watching Discovery and Picard I consider the series dead

You don't even have to rewatch Disco beforehand it's mostly standalone barring mentions of Captain Pike's trip to Boreth in that show, which lays the foundation for a running plot thread. SNW is first and foremost a prequel to The Original Series, and it's honestly good.

Oh, yes. The history of the Mirror universe (and how it acquires technologies like shielding and warp), as told by Enterprise.

EDIT: To be honest, I do think that although "In A Mirror Darkly" is immensely popular because it's a Mirror universe period piece, I do think it would end up biting Trek in the ass down the road, as it inadvertently laid the foundation for Star Trek: Discovery, which further boxed itself in with an entire arc where Michael Burnham travels to the Mirror universe continuing what we saw in "In A Mirror Darkly". Needless to say, in a show already criticised for ditching anything Star Trek for a nihilistic Game of Thrones rip-off, it didn't help matters.

Well, months later, and I have to add that I've seen even more Trek: although I put off watching the S2 cliffhanger and third season of Strange New Worlds due to me intensely disliking the episode "Subspace Rhapsody", I've watched more of Enterprise and finished Next Generation's surprisingly improved second season and beginning the even better third. I've also sampled a bit of Voyager and one episode of Deep Space Nine. However, right now, I'm afraid to say this, but I've not been watching that much Trek. Why? Because I've been having an affair...
It's called "Farscape", it was The Jim Henson Company's attempt to prove they could make an adult TV series, and it wasn't just a smash hit at the time of its airing, but it's utterly fantastic.

Modern Star Trek is awful and disgraceful. Picard season 3 was the only barely watchable show and it was dumb nostalgia bait. Starfleet Academy looks terrible. The new Paramount should just cancel and reboot the franchise while firing all the idiot writers and producers.

I sadly don't know a great deal about Star Trek as a whole however one thing I LOVED watching and became addicted to was Next Generation, always watched it on Bravo Channel late at night. gonna cry again... those were the days
