I absolutely love Scholar of the First Sin!
I never understood why DS2 has a bad rep, except that rolling kind of sucks until you get your Agility to 99 or 100. Then it plays fine. Of course, in classic Dark Souls fashion this is not explained anywhere at all and you have to discuss it with other players directly or indirectly (ie look it up) to know this.

But I really love the story and lore bits in Dark Souls 2, and it has some of my favorite locations in the series.

DS2 is hated because it along with DS3 are mechanically trash in comparison to DS1. They both have significantly less tactical options and builds. The options present don't work as well, either. Elden Ring is similarly shit on for its mechanical shortcomings. You'll also note the lack of bosses in DS1/Demon Souls that fly across the arena and one shot you with some AOE pyrotechnics display.
