Edit made on Jan 2 2025: (Klonoa isn’t first party but he’s cute so I won’t remove him)

I have always found it kinda funny how Sony outclassed Nintendo on both genres that had been traditionally owned by the big N: platformers and RPGs.

Spyro is a delight, and Crash Bandicoot is just fun to pick up and play.

I love this comment so much you have no idea.

Nintendo did fall down comparatively on the 3D platformer front, but they will never be beaten in 2D platformers.

That said, Pandemonium for the win!

Yoooo! Pandemonium was among the first rentals I ended up buying, cuz I loved it so much.

My favorite Sony Platformer is easily Jak and Daxter. I really love the artstyle they went for in Jak 2 and also that franchise had so many good voice actors for example David Herman as Errol in jak 2, 3 and Razer in Jak X

Man I love how expressive the models are

Also a mention to TearAway one of best 3D platformers on the Vita in which you use almost every gimmick of the console to do things. And also Puppeteer on the PS3 such an underrated game

RPGs I'll definitely grant you (though I hear a lot of people praise Xenoblade Chronicles these days and I'm quite a fan of Paper Mario and Thousand Year Door), but platformers as well?

I mean, I liked Crash just fine (never played Spyro) and I suppose the New Super Mario Brothers games were kinda shit, but still - I thought Sunshine was amazing, as were Galaxy 1 and 2 and 3D Land. Not to mention Odyssey and Wonder.
Thinking about it though, there really were very few Nintendo platformers released for a couple years during the PS2/PS3 era.

In any case - the Ratchet & Clank games were my favourite, loved their tone back in the day.

EDIT: Oh! And Klonoa too! That game had a really odd atmosphere - super cozy, but also weirdly foreboding.

This isn’t a game.

KLONOA!!!! *charges* ;D

I love that one. Such a fun and creative experience.
Man if i didn’t limit myself to Sony owned IPs I would’ve added Klonoa in a heartbeat. Problem is if I didn’t limit myself, I’d spend all week working on that thumbnail. xD

I have to thank many things to Nintendo, but one of them would be platformers. Without them, we wouldn't have any Nintendo fans working for Sony. They take the platforming genre to the next level, especially the PS2 era

And they still did till this day…with Astro Bot

I think out of all these, the only one I couldn't get into is Little Big Planet. It's kinda boring? Definitely has a very different spirit compared to their PS1~2 IPs. Haven't played TearAway yet though.

I absolutely love sony platformers my favorites being the og crash trilogy and ape escape I love sly and ratchet too but they're haard to emulate in my laptop, I did love ratchet deadlocked/gladiator back in the day and happy to see that entry being retro loved nowadays, okay platforming and a lot of cutomization and shooting I just love it!

I'd say they were out of the genre at this point, but then Astro Bot happened. Has to be about the best platformer to hit a Sony console....I dunno, ever? I kinda hated Crash Bandicoot, definitely not what I bought a PlayStation for back in the day.

(Okay, I bought it for Twisted Metal and Battle Arena Toshinden, so the bar wasn't high.)

Puppeteer deserves a remaster damnit! Fairly short print PS3 exclusive with minimal marketing that released right before the PS4 launched. One of the most polished and enjoyable platformers of that generation (or even the 2010s period if we wanna expand into the next generation) and so few have had a chance to properly play it!

>Tfw no klonoa

>sad wahoo
I love Klonoa, I only added Sony owned IPs (or were owned by Sony at some point) because I knew I was gonna add every character under the sun (Rayman, croc, glover, jumping flash, gex, croc, Rockman dash, etc) and I had to limit myself ?
Edit: look again :p

I dunno how I forgot about puppeteer. Good shout.

Crash 1-3, their best trilogy platform on PS1 imo. As well as a great racing game. Pity what happened to Naughty Dog nowadays.
I don’t think they’ll ever recover. They made TLOU their own call of duty.
