Sony ending physical disc production in 2028, going digital only

It was gonna happen sooner or later but Sony removing digital movies and series the day before but now doing this and the announcement of shutting down the PS3 and Vita store the same day is crazy work from them.
Doing really feels like them saying "We're in charge here and there's nothing you can do about it peasant".

If consoles are going to be around 800 to possibly 900 dollars in the future I see no reason to have a console when a PC has better services and more access to games which isn't even counting emulation.

I can clearly see that with Microsoft, but Nintendo won't. They figure out ways on their own and will try their best to fix this mess.
Actually, although partially, Nintendo has already done it with their key cards.
Years ago, when they announced the Switch 2 along the stupid key cards, some people decided to ignore the obvious writing on the wall, specially those devoted to the cult.

Holy... an 8 page thread in less than 12 hours!

Gonna go put some popcorn in the microwave lol.

but you know what they should CUT DOWN THE PRICES since we no longer get physical copies or booklets or really anything real lol.
nintendo has some nerve with their empty "key cards" being 80$, god damn...
There has not been an $80 game card release so far as far as I'm aware. MK World was on cart. Also N has not used them yet for a first party game.

Game Key Cards were functionally already a thing on the original Switch, but they didn't have to mark themselves as not having all the data on the cartridge as transparently. For instance, Megaman Legacy Collection apparently only have MM 1-6 on cart, and you had to download 7-10.

I get why people don't like Key Cards, but they are not a new thing in the NSW2 era. It's just that N doesn't want buyers to be uninformed and buy a cart that has no real function, so they're forcing the publishers to disclose when the full game isn't included.

More hard drive space being taken up by every single game in a market with surging memory prices.
How are there still people thinking modern console games run off the disc? Lol.

It's all absolutely grim, yet at the same time I hold on to the (very) thin hope that this finally causes normies to see the writing on the wall in regards to modern gaming. It's unlikely, but surely there's gotta be a breaking point even for them
Most normies pay for Game Pass, even on PC. I don't think you understand how devalued the concept of ownership is now.

Final add on. As a guy with a big shelf of games, I don't care.
I think you have to be kind of a stooge to not have anticipated this since at least 2020-21. We have very obviously been heading this way for a long time. Feeling any emotion about this is a massive waste of your brain.

A good example of how this has obviously been a thing for a very long time, and why there's no reason for this particular issue with Sony should be getting people up in arms. The war was lost a long time ago.
I mean, they are up in arms across the board. They aren't buying Xbox which has been releasing worthless physical games with nothing on the disc, they've been opposed to Game-Key Cards on Switch 2, and this is the worst of all of them. Fuck the corpos, let 'em burn. I was already having a difficult time trying to justify spending $1K on a new console, but this is the final nail in that coffin. PC + Switch 2 for me going forward. The only thing that kept me from completely going PC was physical games.

Okay, buy why now? This isn't new.

This has been happening for a very long time at this point. Switch 1 had carts without the full game on it, key cards aren't new, they're just marked as such now. Do people not know this?

You're giving the corpos money...

..They don'y make physical games for PC.........

So little of this conversation makes sense to me.

Perfect sense.

If you're going to not have physical games, going all digital anyway; you might as well engage with publishers on the open platform where you have the most leverage and freedom.

I have no idea what you're trying to say.

It makes perfect sense, to be pissed off about the lack of physical games on consoles going forward.

If the whole market is digital only now, it makes sense to go to the best digital only platform in the market. PC.

It offers multiple stores, direct to publisher game sales, and better hardware choices. You can even still buy physical games if you want in the PC ecosystem.

The whole argument for keeping physical media options pretty much died when the products themselves became useless plastic cases without manuals, materials, or even the full content of the games on board. Not even just codes in a box or key cards.

A lot of people are not happy. Simmons and Charlie pretty much says, these companies don't like people owning anything, and want them to use their shitty digital services. Paying $80+ a month. This goes all the way back to the 1980s when Nintendo tried to sue video stores and claim renting games as illegal. I knew of the story years ago, and first learned it in high school.

I was already wary of the PS4 (a system I ended up enjoying a ton), and I believe that it's gonna be my final console.

I just don't trust any player in this industry not to fuck me over.

And how sad is that? I'm being forced to draw a line in the sand and entrenching myself with a system released more than a decade ago when I'll probably live to see several more generations of gaming because my trust on an industry I have enjoyed since I was a child was completely eroded by that very same industry.

It's a thing of madness.

I'm so glad PS2, AKA where Sony Peaked and everything went downhill after, is the only Sony console important to me because every time something happens Sony gets more and more embarrassing in my eyes

This company chose to be obsessed with expensive technology and hyper-realistic graphics more than actually developing games and respecting all their legacy games (PS2) than made them successful in the first place!

Obligatory PS5 Has NO GAMES

Join the club, sister. Personally I'm going to focus on retro handhelds now.

I've been reading this thread and I can see valid points on why this is bad in terms of digital <-> physical, but I wanna ask honestly;

Can this maybe be a good thing?

It pisses me off that the hobby is plauged by scalpers, pretenders and influencers.
People who have no business being in it's sphere let alone having a say on how it's run.

How many youtubers do you see that are obviously paid shills or have no idea on the history of a series or it's legacy, yet have some kind of voice or influence over the game's direction or marketing or even have an in with developers?

I used to hate microsoft for bringing dudebros into the hobbies and normalizing the hobby into the mainstream.

And I used to hate nintendo for shutting down fan games and their over reliance on gimmicks.

But I hate sony more for being a major push into cinematic games, whenever I see new or modern games trying to be more like movies and less of a game I can't help but think that it's because of sony games influencing the direction of the industry.

Vote with your wallets, pirate everything, and if you must have a PS6 get it second hand even if you have to get it refurbished and repair it yourself. At least then those corporate suits at Sony don't get any of your money. Also, if you should get a PS6, jailbreak it the moment it can be jailbroken and pirate every game the console has, don't let them make a dime!
