Sony ending physical disc production in 2028, going digital only

The loss of physical media is no big deal. It's inevitable. Discs are slow and don't hold enough space.

The answer to deal with the bullshit around it is to embolden and re-enforce the public domain laws to be less preferential toward corporations that refuse to let things go and compete.

Everything that gets "published" and sold to consumers should be on a reasonable timer to enter public domain, everything purchased that isn't reliant on a host server should carry some risk of an owed refund liability if it gets delisted.

The laws need to shift and come down hard, and the whole thing might be doable in the next decade or more since a lot of classic IP is going public anyway. Disney, DC comics, etc.

The hardware platforms themselves should be forced into public domain. You should be legally allowed to emulate PS3 and Xbox 360, or older bespoke consoles on any hardware powerful enough to handle it, just to keep your games accessible.
That's what Stop Killing Games has been trying to do. However, the ESA and similar groups have been more than happy to lie & bribe (this is a known factual statement) to ensure SKG is defeated in the political arena. Should they fail? There will be NO CONSUMER RIGHTS.

I guess this confirms that the PS6 is going to be a Digital-only console. Fuck you, Sony.

Remember when Sony were hailed as the saviors of gaming?
I beg your pardon?

Nintendo are not saviors, all of sudden either. People should do well to remember that, and stop looking for saviors. Any type of arrogant company is bad for the industry, and people as a whole.
I double beg your pardon?

SKG got to hand ESA their lying asses on a platter, though... at least in one hugely satisfying instance.

I have so many words that I can not say otherwise I might get put away to the big house. However I will say that I am really anger. Especially when this was after Sony pulled 550 movies from people's online collection just a few DAYS before this.

In the court of public opinion. But, as we know, legislators don't care about that, and likely have no clue that they were lied to. Even then...if they do know, what are the chances they care that they were lied to?

Oh, and closing the online store for PS3 & PSP. Again.

You will own nothing and be fucking happy about it. I am sure they are going to use the "environment" bullshit reason for doing this as if a corporation like Sony actually care about that.

Nintendo be like: Game Key Cards don't seem so bad now, hahahaha!!!
Still sucks you need to be connected online to download, then again that's what discs have been like since PS3/XBOX360 era.

There is still no strong reason to buy a PS5 or Xbox Series X, and they are bumping those up in price each year while putting together the next generation of crap hardware with no games.

No physical media, and paying extra for online subscriptions just negates the entire purpose of consoles further. Nobody should trust Sony, Nintendo, or Microsoft. You shouldn't even trust Valve, despite them staying good on the service side of everything and helping to break reliance on Windows.

Gaming is dog shit these days. A modest gaming PC is the safest way to go forward, until the hardware market crashes out and component prices drop.

Very sad news. I don't own a PS5 but do own every Playstation before that. Buying games secondhand was always one of the best things about owning a console. They've wanted to stop this for years of course...and the average consumer doesn't care much.

Things like that are why I'd rather these big video game companies just completely ditch physical anyway. Total waste of plastic on something that can just have its access be revoked on you because Big Corpo ltd decided that you shouldn't be able to have it anymore for whatever reason. I am buying indie games from GoG, itch.io and Steam these days, I don't care much about physical media PLUS it saves a ton of space in my room and whoever my girlfriend/wife may be in the future won't be cross at me for hoarding a hundred plastic discs.

It was gonna happen sooner or later but Sony removing digital movies and series the day before but now doing this and the announcement of shutting down the PS3 and Vita store the same day is crazy work from them. PS6 most likely will be out by 2028 so they definitely are laying out the roots by announcing this ahead of time.

May the small gaming retail stores find a way to survive for the work they have done till this point, it definitely is the end of a era. For sure I don't plan on buying a PS6 either way.
