Sony officials relish on the fact that first party support has been weak this gen and try to prop up Sony's work with third parties to deliver games on PS5.

They're framing it as a good thing, but this looks more like uneasy spin.

At least they're honest about the "no content" part.

They entirely deserve to be humbled after this whole live service debacle though. All they had to do was not shutter their first party studios and not pump money into these doomed projects that nobody wants.

Yeah I have to agree with the third party taking up a big section of the pie and without GTA 6 and the due marketing deal, The PS5 really is an empty box with no content in terms of first party.
You have to wait waaay too long for these releases due to development times and for what? Spiderman 2? God of War reboots? The Last of Us part 2?
It's over.
I said this before in another, similar thread but the only reason my PS5 is hanging around is for GTA 6, if that was not a thing, would have sold the console off months ago.

That's not really what the CEO is saying lol

“If you talk to [PlayStation CEO] Nishino-san, who has a very product-led background, he’ll say, ‘PlayStation is just a plastic box without content.’ And third-parties are the lion’s share of the content. So, it’s critical that we continue to lean in and drive, and be ambitious and bring new voices to the platform. If we ever stop doing that, the industry will stop growing. We have, as an industry leader, a responsibility to continue to drive and push and to grow the whole industry, not just our own business.”

The "Playstation is just a plastic box without content" isn't a literal statement where is saying there is no content. He is saying "Without content, all Playstation would be is a plastic box". He is saying the system has content and that they need to continue working internally and with third parties to continue releasing quality content.

We've seen stuff like Stellar Blade, Marvel Tokon, Marathon, Lost Soul Aside and many many more titles powered by direct publishing funds or at least technology/marketing assistance from Sony to get out of the door. That's part of what they're talking about. Which, I know many of us are generally unhappy with their output for one reason or another, but I think they're doing fairly ok.

- God of War: Sons of Sparda
- Marathon
- MLB The Show
- Saros
- Marvel Tokon
- Wolverine
- Kena 2

And that's just what they're directly publishing/developing. That's almost one game a month. Now the only games from that list I care about are Marathon, Saros and MLB The Show (which I only buy every used the next year anyway) so it isn't like the lineup speaks to me like some of their old lineups do, but in terms of raw numbers it is clear that they are showcasing some level of value to people who care about their ecosystem. Marvel Tokon is a hugely anticipated game and Insomniac's Marvel games get tons of people excited and Wolverine is no different. Kena 1 was a bit of a surprise hit and I'm glad the studio is getting to make a sequel. Sons of Sparda is a gorgeous and unique looking side scroller and I'm glad Sony gave a solid budget to a studio to make a 2D spin-off of a beloved IP that takes us back to the Greek saga. MLB The Show has been in a bit of a stagnant state for the last couple years, but when you have your sport so thoroughly represented in digital form there isn't much to be done. As always, sports games should never be annual releases anyways, but as far as sports games go MLB the Show maintaining its high level of quality and getting just a bit better every year is refreshing when the last decade has seen every other sports franchise deteriorate into dogshit.

Rambling aside, while I don't like modern Sony for a lot of reasons, I can't sit here and pretend they don't release games anymore. Their era of chasing live service ending a year or two ago was a great sign and I can only hope the new approach to development going forward leads to stellar and varied output from studios in the coming years. Other than that, I can only hope that tech stops being ludicrously expensive before their next system comes out because aint no way anyone is dropping $700+ on a console that isn't a moron.

Eh, this is a bit too late to say that... Why not bringing more things to the console?

If you get to the nitty gritty, PlayStation talks publicly more about the tech on the PS5 Pro and new controllers and plates, than they do first party games. They focus significantly more on the system than on the games. And their game offerings have been pretty lacking.

Never owned a playstation but I tinkered with one years ago. Always been a fan of nintendo. Not too keen on them nowadays. Seems like the big companies are in a heap of trouble everytime I log on the web.

You have an article on this from an actual professional news source? Because fuck Dreamcast Guy. I may have ad-block on for YouTube, but I am not touching his shit. Until I see official words, then is just another made up rumor mill people are tossing around.

I just see videos like this for fun. He presents an interview of a Sony first party/second party upper management liaison where the guy talks that the focus on third party is a good thing and PlayStation is pretty healthy. Smells of uneasiness. Lol

Ah, so like the WIIU, Sony is abandoning the PS5 like it was rotten food. If they continue to follow the Nintendo trend, the PS6 might actually be a half-decent console this time (ala the Switch) but then will get cocky again and turn it back into a glorified digital storefront (ala the Switch 2 and PS5 again).

My Nintendo fan in me be like.

More power to you on that, but I do not like the guy.

well well well, I hope his statement is a declaration of intentions, I don't mind if Sony starts making more exclusive games (I'm a pc gamer), I just don't want to see them crash and burn once people lose interest in a brand with no exclusive games, microsoft is barely hanging in there and it's for obvious reasons, they have no brand identity, and I belive Sony is heading in the same direction

They could do whatever if they would just reopen their J games portfolio…! Gravity Rush, Arc the Lad, Alundra, The Legend of Dragoon, Wild Arms (I like JRPGs) just to name a few, if they kept making new stuff like along those lines their internal identity would be WAY more potent. But that the West-style games had to own the whole spotlight instead of sharing it is just crazy to me, but not irreversible.

The last good home console was the ps3 and nothing will convince me otherwise.
