This fan game running under a modification of the Doom Legacy Sourceport and has been worked for over two decades is quite surprisingly one of the best Sonic game at all
SRB2 title.jpg

The level design is open enough to allow some exploration and speed while not making you feel lost.

Thanks to its modding support you pretty much have a ton of maps and characters included if you download them from the forums.

Technically it's not finished but it's one of the most complete Sonic fangame with 7 different levels of several acts as well as 3 playable characters.

Can confirm. This game is super fun. The most important piece, the core gameplay, is super unique, fun, and polished! It takes some getting used to, as you control the character and camera separately (and I mean completely separately, which can cause some disorientation in such a fast paced platformer as this) I think the game is more than worth a play! Plus, it has an awesome community of modders creating levels, characters, and more which can get you more out of the game.

It truly is a free game that you can get truly immersed in, and I think that speaks volumes. It’s fan passion that shows that time and effort can yield incredible results.

Some people could find the sprites confusing for depth and jumping on enemies but thankfully the game has 3D models integrated.

I'm also glad how the 2.2 is also fully made with gamepad in mind (if you wish) so that it feels like a proper 3D platformer and not just a FPS with a third person option.

The level design of the 2.2 is also much smoother with slopes whereas 2.1 and previous builds were really blocky-looking.

I'd still argue that Sonic's gameplay (with the "thock") makes him the "easy to learn hard to master" characters while a first playthrough should be recommended with Tails (or at least using Sonic & Tails for his flight assist).

I would still recommend to try the 1.09.4 version (the very last build before the 2.x branch) as it's the last version done by the original creator of the game before he quit

And to better appreciate how far it evolved.

there's also SRB2 kart
I consider it to be its entirely separate fangame.

I remember not enjoying playing as Sonic, as I felt that I wasn’t getting my bearings. Whenever I hop back into the game, I usually play as Knuckles or Tails.

I definitely see, with this game, why main Sonic Team have had such a hard time with Knuckles’ gameplay: I keep gliding and climbing every wall I see, thinking there might be a secret or separate route. I’ve gone for over an hour in a level before because of this, just checking every nook and cranny. I eventually realized “hey, this isn’t how they want you to play the game” but I still feel bad knowing I’m probably missing routes by just wanting to get a move on.

Sonic is quite tricky because the "thok" can lead to your death.

The 2.1 was much less forgivable to you as well.

Tails is basically the best beginner friendly character.

Knuckles was the de facto hard mode in Sonic 3&K and it felt a bit like that in SRB2 in some of the alternative routes.

The STJ (Sonic Team Junior aka SSNTails' dev team for the game) has proven they could handle it better than a big company. Sega really doesn't know how to properly manage their devs and games.

Antdude introduced me to the world of Sonic Robo Blast 2. I can't even remember why I decided to take a chance and watch one of his videos and it just happened to be Sonic Fangames, probably since Space Hamster no longer does youtube to provide me with fan game videos. There is good news about Sonic Robo Blast 2 for Linux gamers, there is a Flatpak of it so it's super easy to play on Linux. Also Flatpaks of SRB2 Kart, Dr. Eggman Kart, and SRB2 Persona

Yes, it started like that with the first Robo Blast. You can see how far the game has gone through. Clickteam Fusion wasn't even meant for that kind of game.

And the sequel was even meant to be 2D

Talk about a glowup when they decided to use Doom Legacy

Okay, I'll admit, this doesn't look that great but it's still an interesting tech demo.
The Xmas build is much more interesting and feels like an actual game.

Been playing this fangames since 2015-2016 (2.1 era), I was used to playing online a lot. I'm feeling that I miss those 2.1 servers I've played in those days, especially Spectrum's Server and that one server called "SONIC MANIA PLUS".
Good thing to see 2.1 getting back with the new Legacy fork and the new master server for 2.1

You too?

The 2.1 gave me a hard time because of Castle Eggman with Sonic. I've finished with Tails only sadly...

2.0 felt too much like a beta for the 2.x branch... Deep Sea is tedious.

The 2.2 was a major glowup for both DS and CE (and Arid Canyon too). They cut the right parts of Egg Rock although you can still feel the "2.1-ness" of the level design.

I used to play earlier versions of SRB2, including a Dreamcast port back in the early to late 2000's.

1.09.4? I kinda liked playing it because of the charming jank (and the funky Knuckles model).

I forgot about the port but if it's with a modification of the Doom engine it can be easily ported.

The Persona and PSO mods for it still blow me away!

I was addicted to SRB2Kart. SRB2 itself I like, but the kart game was loads of fun. Development eventually moved off of it to its successor - Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers which I personally don't like as much, but it's even more impressive of a game.

What did they change?

I didn't get too deep into SRB2 Kart simply because I'm not entirely interested in MK-inspired racing games.

Ring Racers is more skill based. You need rings to go fast.
