God, I had one of these horrible things years ago. I traded an Atari Jaguar for it. I had all three of the Zelda games, the video card, and Voyeur with it. This is the model I got. I still feel ripped off.

Edit — Was a damn good CD player, though

Are there any decent games on this thing that aren't available elsewhere in one form or another?
God no

I never thought I’d actually meet someone who owned one these. Out of curiosity does it play those video cds those kind of cds quite big h in the late 90s before dvd went on full blast.

I honestly don't remember, I think it did. But again, that's been years ago. I seem to remember it would play burnt movies on CD-R, but I could be misremembering

I remember the commercial for this thing. It was so expensive and I had no idea what it was trying to be. We didn't even have a VCR yet. So I was fascinated by the concept of this thing. When we did finally get a VRC it was this gigantic metal behemoth that kept eating tapes. But at least it couldn't butcher the Zelda franchise. Although those games are worth it just for the memes.

Kids these days will never know the extra adrenaline rush that came with renting a VHS tape and praying to the Gods that it wouldn't get stuck.

It almost enhanced the experience.

What's a VHS? :3

Joking aside, @Waffles or the "Please don't break it, please don't break it" if it did eat the tape.

And fined, we were /Yoda XD
Yeah, here. I can't vouch for anywhere else. But basically, you bought the VERY overpriced movie.
I think if you broke it or whatever, it was somewhere upward of 150 bucks for the movie.
A friend of mine worked at a video store when we were in high school as a part-time job.
She told me it was the cost of the movie (fair enough) plus two weeks' rent (7 bucks a day) plus 10% of a lost month's sales.

I was honestly shocked, then I remembered that fucking up a tape would run you around $50 here as well. Absolutely criminal.

New movies on VHS had premium prices up until about the end of the 80's/1990, like $75 for a new release. I think the reasoning back then was that it was easy to record your own copy with a blank tape, so they wanted to make sure they got their cut? Maybe they just didn't have enough faith that there was a large home audience, but once they dropped to 20-30 bucks or so sales really took off.

I tend to forget that, but it makes sense.

The fear of losing the tape was so permanent for us that we ended up buying most of ours after they became bargain bin material. In fact, up to 75% of my current collection was rescued from the trash or given to me for free.

Oh, how times have changed.
