So, Doom CAN'T run on Neo Geo...

Happy Parks And Rec GIF by Udge

I saw this earlier..
I was considering making a post about it myself, but you beat me to it..::cirnoshrug

Taking into account that Doom has been made to run on virtually everything else, I'm sure that MVG made that video in order to informally throw down the gauntlet to the broader community..

I think the main reason why it has never been accomplished is because of how rare the console was. But with that new, official clone coming out– it's the perfect time to attract the attention of a whole new generation of autistic minds to the puzzle of cracking the untapped potential of the Neo Geo hardware..

I never thought that one day I'd read "Doom" and "can't run" in the same sentence... ::omgdoom
It truly is the ultimate oxymoron.

I'm actually thinking the same thing — he even released his source code for it.

To be fair, it was his Ad Hoc attempt at making Wolfenstein 3D work. But all the same, having a proto- proof of concept/ Hello World is certainly better than nothing..

Yeah, exactly.

It's wild because the Neo Geo could probably have the coolest version of Doom.

Remember this: the OG doom struggles to run on an intel 386, that cpu is quite a bit faster than the motorola 68000 found on the Neo Geo, so it makes total sense that it can't run on that hardware. the super nes with the FX 2 running at over 20MHz, can't handle the game that well and that chip was optimized to be good a 3D games (for 90's technologies standards)

Agreed..
It will probably need to be completely rebuilt from the ground up. But whoever eventually pulls it off will certainly have quite an impressive achievement to put on their resume..

I have faith though. If Doom can run on a graphic calculator, then it will eventually run on the Neo Geo..

I mean...
They have DOOM running on everything, from E. coli gut bacteria and a pregnancy test to a 700 potato powered graphing calculator, a PDF file, and even an oscilloscope....

The fact that it doesn't run on the Neo Geo is pretty sad, actually.
I meant to watch this, but I never got around to it today. I was just busy with stuff

Can I force you to program a working port?

I think doom could work on the neo geo, it'd just need to be a from the ground up reworking like that aftermentioned atari 2600 version

Games like The Super Spy and Beast Busters prove that limited first person perspective games with scrolling are possible on that system, so it's not out of the realm of possibility!

Crazy... I was literally going to post about this video!
Yes, the Neo is a monster, there's very little it can't do, realistically, but that one thing. Still, it would be awesome if someone made it work.

Never say never. Someone passionate (and crazy) enough will eventually do something.

You know? I never noticed the lack of a Doom port on Neo Geo... Probably because I had always assumed it was a given (look at the sheer amount of random devises the fucker runs on).

But I just LOVE these kinds of tech tidbits into consoles and engines from the past:

Programming error? Oversight? Or just a design philosophy that Doom simply wasn't a part of? Whatever the case it's fascinating, man.
Finally! Doom can't run on something, and it's the fucking Neo Geo!

nunca pensé vivir para saberlo... el fin está cerca

i find this pure BS, doom is essentially a bunch of 2d images, you're telling the console with the most FLASHIEST FIGHTING games in existence, and metal slug up to 5 (crazy ass graphics on those games) cannot play doom a game that works on SNES and genesis just as well?
next week, someone will make it run on neogeo

How?

I think you're oversimplifying things a bit too much there.

The SNES version needed a separate chip.
And the video itself explains why the NG can't draw the graphics the way they need to be drawn due to a chip architecture difference.

Anyone saying this will be easy hasn't watched the video

If we got a Metal Slug style 2d Doom run n gun instead id be very happy

Maybe rework it as a rail shooter with scaling sprites, a top down shooting game or even an isometric 3D game?

Or make the level design so simplified it would be a different game.

I'm joking! The Neo Geo was a beast when it launched with great arcade games and it was only at the reach of rich people or business owners. Not the regular Joe that bought gaming magazines, glued the face to stores windows showing the latest games and gushed over videogames when he talked.
