Today's Skype is passed away Rest in peace Skype you'll never be forgotten

Missing Google+ as much as it's integration was awful it was a quick easy way to make niche communities that only communicated through youtube with pseudonyms and screennames who didn't want to out their name or family on Facebook or had the knowhow to make a forum.

It would be sad if it was still a good piece of software.
I say good riddance.

Yahoo Mail isn't dead. Their service is working alright :)

But I celebrate Skype is dead because since it was bought by Microsoft from Google the software worked worse and worse since they change it to a "packed web application" with Skype 8. The best Skype is Skype 7 and it will always be. The only thing I loved from Skype 8 is the way you could unpack it, modify the interface to block many options and only allow what you want for the user, repack it and distribute it. I know because I was in charge of a big office in IT department years ago.

Now we have the utter garbage Teams, that at first was a regular Windows program, now is a more garbage Microsoft App. They are trying to make the worst possible application for companies.

I had made my account in 2003 and rode it through MSN Messenger, Pidgin and Skype.

There was a wealth of bittersweet memories in each and every chat window I had opened in there... and while I wasn't so blind as to ignore just how much of a ghost town it had become since I last used it fully (in 2015!), it still kinda stings.

This is just the latest act on a long war.

MindViz, VampireFreaks, Nextopia, AIM, MSN Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, a multitude of forums and blogs... And now this.

They take so many irreplaceable memories from you and don't even care.

That said, the memories never go away. Remember, it wasn’t the application itself that was the memory, it was the people you met along the way. And, if enough people truly loved their time there, you’ll see it again. Maybe in a fan project, maybe in a new application, who knows?

This forum is a testament that the old ways of internet communication will never die. They’ll simply go home for a little bit.

Wow, Pidgin...I have fond memories of it as well. Well, it's not dead, but I remember doing a local server in computing class for our classmates and using it for chatting with people in other classrooms (where I was studying was kinda big). Fun times...

I also have to mention my beloved Odigo. That was one of my favourite chat programs of all times, because I could search users and filter the search by language and country. That was the first time I started chatting with people overseas!

I agree, but context is important, too.

Most of the truly precious chats were riddled with spelling errors, plagued with those incredibly annoying --yet oddly charming-- animated emoticons that replaced letters and symbols and typed with the sort of wild energy that only exists when you are particularly young and are about to reach the height of the dive bomber recovery maneuver that's life. I wanted to revisit all of that while encasing it in its own, frozen time period. And I often did, but now that's simply not possible anymore.

Even if I were to still be in touch with the same people, something would be amiss. And that just sucks.

It's unfortunate, but it was kind of inevitable. When discord was made, so many people emigrated there. Even as they didn't have any basic features like the friends list.
