Since The dreamcast was one of the most underrated consoles of the sixth gen, how many still own the dreamcast and still play games well.

I don't know how many dreamcasts I have. Between my wife and I we have a lot of games for it. Most of them are hers. I hooked up her VA0 earlier this year and found that its laser had went out. I put a sticker on hers so it wouldn't get mixed up with the others. I rummaged around and found that the one my friend gave me with a Power Stone 2 disc in it was a VA1. Also with a dead laser. Actual WIN with that one. Next one I looked at was a VA2 and it still works perfect. So if you want a Dreamcast and only want to play Disc games maybe the VA2 is best?

Anyway I just bought an installed my first ODE into a VA1 Dreamcast a month ago.

This is what would fit in the CD Case I thought would be a good place for them for the time being.

GTA 3 on Dreamcast is actually impressive. So is Super Mario 64...
I bought a used Toro VGA box for $40 and hooked that up to a Morph4K that I have an analog bridge board and VGA + VGA connector card in. Now that's playing Dreamcast.

i still have an original PAL model, bought on day one release.
with a couple of pot tweaks and cleaning the lens every now and then, it is still reading originals and copied games today, but it does suffer of overheating in the hottest days.

I love the console, but i must admit i haven't played it much in this last year

BEST image quality on a crt

today there is an unofficial 'invasive' way to double the RAM, a little shame Sega didn't plan something related and easier to do back then, like Saturn expansion; the aftermarket scene would have benefit a lot imo

Sega stuff is almost non-existent where I'm from, I have a Dreamcast with gdemu and loose controller port, in fact I'm currently replaying Shenmue.

I bought one maybe 16 years ago to catch up on all the games I missed out on. I made 100% sure to get one that could play burnt discs!

The only gripe I ever had toward the Dreamcast is the controller....
To me, it just isn't comfortable, it doesn't sit right in the hands, ya know?
The Saturn and Sega Genesis/Mega Drive have excellent controllers.

Definitely one of my least favorite controllers but I don't mind the handle grips and L + R button placement, I liked pulling in opposite directions on the grips for some stupid reason. But I was a damn sight happier when I found a Saturn to DC adapter as I never got on with the DC pad for fighting games. And I'm definitely biased as the Model 2 Saturn pad is my undisputed favorite controller of all time 🌟 So many decent fighters on the DC, shmups too!

If anyone reading this has an original Xbox and it still has that in it, remove it now. It's literally a ticking time bomb with a random number generator as the countdown timer.

Is it possible to salvage an Xbox once it's capacitor has gone?

I have a bunch of Dreamcasts laying around, waiting for me to build adapters and dreampi kits. Every time I look at my physical game collection for it, I consider putting together a stock console setup without the ODE. The modern VMU options have been a game changer for fully loaded console libraries.

PC Quake 2, Zelda OOT, and Sonic Mania are all being ported to DC right now.

I specifically like the N64 ports showing up, but I don't know how much more that will keep happening, since people are doing more recomps instead of full decomps to get around a lot of the compiler bullshit game developers did back in the day.

Hopefully EasyRPG's Dreamcast branch gets work so RPG Maker games can get ported over in a better state.

Very cool

Yeah, so long as you catch the capacitor soon enough and the electrolyte has not caused irreparable trace rot on the board, you can replace it or just remove it. However, if you don't replace it, you'll have to set the date and time every time you restart it, like a dead CMOS battery on a motherboard.

Hey @Zerpina, is it even recommended to get an original Xbox? The 360 can play pretty much most of the games released for it along with it's own library of exclusives, the One is can do so too, and the X/S series are a joke to even consider

the og xbox has the best personal soundtrack over game in history, the 360 version cant compare.. it depends on what you want i guess.. but ive never owned the series X etc whatever so i dont know what it offers.. but yeah, the og xbox and 360 are the best in my opinion..

Well, that depends. The 360 is roughly compatible with about half of the original Xbox library. Most likely, the games you want to play will be supported, but it's always best to check.

As for getting one, sure... there are a few reasons. First, it will play every original Xbox game (provided the optical drive isn't dead). They are incredibly easy to mod now... basically, a USB to Xbox adapter, a kind of hard to find flash drive, and one of a few games. It takes about 15 minutes to mod them.

And well, the OG Xbox looks freaking cool :) Not to mention, it makes an excellent media player, even to this day.

And you can hdmi mod it as well...

No Xbox is fully back compat with OG Xbox, and performance on 360 back compat is half baked, somewhat bad software emulation.

The One & Series consoles are close to each other and might as well be the same platform, with One X and Series X also having performance boosting patches, or specific games getting 4K updates. There is no full back compat for either first or second Xbox generations. The games you run in the disc drives would prompt downloads of recompiled games.

If you wanted to play everything from OG Xbox, the only way to go about it is with real OG Xbox hardware. It was easy to mod and install games on when it was still sold in stores, and these days it's a no brainer.

is it half? jeez 70% of my og xbox physical discs wont play on 360, and like 90% of my discs og xbox and 360 wont work on the xbox one... maybe my games arent the big popular ones, i dont know

I'd really like to see some pictures of this capacitor leak damage on Xboxs. I've seen hundreds of leaky capacitors on PC motherboards. And it's never been a big deal compared to the disgusting barrel batteries on old motherboards. I have an Amiga 2000 motherboard whose barrel batter leaked so bad it destroyed its CPU. I've repaired several PC motherboards with barrel battery damage, but none were as bad as that Amiga 2000.

maaan.. Zerpina's comment above made me terrified of opening it up.. its so old but still works.. plus Im not a big hardware expert.. I guess I'll just pray to the Ghost in its Shell..

yeah my big problem with the DC was the controller.. well, its not as bad as most people say, but mostly the super stiff d pad, the huge dead spots on the analog stick, the four face buttons unlike the six from the Sega Saturn which was so good for fighting games (but every modern controller followed the 4 button thing so I guess Sega was on to something) and the chord attached to the bottom of the controller.. but i dislike the n64 controller more.. why cant we have the greatest 2D controller ever from the Sega Saturn and combine it with dual analogs and triggers?

Well, yes, aside from certain aspects, the Dreamcast controller wasn't the best, but it wasn't all that bad, after all.
The N64 controller, on the other hand, was truly awful and very uncomfortable (at least for me) especially with certain games... 😕

And the original Xbox used a low quality aerogel 'supercapacitor' which is prone to failure and leakage. The issue is that you don't know when they are leaking, which is why they destroy the boards by leaking a corrosive, acidic electrolyte fluid

oh god I really dont wanna open my old consoles up.. you got me terrified of what I might find
I mean... it wouldn't hurt to make sure the CC isn't leaking. If it isn't, desolder it and get rid of it, even if you're not going to replace it anytime soon. Again, you'll just have to reset the date and time after each bootup with the Xbox..

Better one that forgets than a dead one...
