"Shooting Star" Games?

Not to the same level as some others mentioned here, but Mario Maker was oddly a huge deal online even though it was a WiiU game. By the time the more accessible second game came out, it's mass market moment had faded.

Hello Neighbor and Only Up come to mind
The disappearance of Only Up is entirely the fault of developer, who infringed on copyright and couldn't handle the backlash.

Oh, and "Gone Home".

Man, did that thing fizzle out quick.
I still remember that this wasn't actually a game (it was mostly a walking sim) and the twist in this story is that the main character is gay.

I don't mind 80's nor 90's nostalgia but this alone cannot carry a game.

I feel like there was a weird disconnect in it, too — the house itself was very well done, so the artists really brought their A Game to the table, but the actual writing and VA was severely lacking.

It's easy to criticize — and kudos to them for even finishing the damn game in the first place — but even YouTubers failed to be all that entertained with it and stretched episodes around it, even though it could reasonably be completed in under three hours.

Clash Royale and Clash of Clans, i believe people got sick of they getting milked

Maybe Raid: Shadow Legends? It's been a while since I last saw a YouTuber whoring themselves out for it.

PUBG and Fortnite come to mind. I know they still both have decent sized player bases, but there was a time where they were the games, and now I don't hear about them very much.

Other people covered these, but a lot of the casual games made by PopCap in the 2000s, namely PVZ, Peggle, and Bejeweled. I still honestly play them to these day, especially Peggle. They're super fun games, I can recommend them to anyone as just chill games. But they all (ESPECIALLY PVZ) were really big until they eventually just disappeared.

Splitgate was pretty big a few years ago because it was a competitive FPS but with portals, and now there's currently 19 active players on Steam... Team Fortress 2 was also fucking MASSIVE, and it still has a playerbase, but it's so old that it's not receiving many updates and it's a shell of its former self. I still play it though...

Arc Raiders also has faded out... it still has a player base, but not even a year ago it was HUGE, and now I haven't hear much talk about it.

Oh, and remember Agar.io and Slither.io? Those were huge in ~2016 or so.

It's funny, there's so many games that have come and gone in such a short time.

Any "flavor of the month/week" like those multiplayer games people already mentioned, my 2 cents.

Isn't that game the one that popularised people saying "friend slop"? I still don't like the word because it implies that video games cannot be made for people with friends but at the same time it's clear that they're made for streaming in mind than playing it strictly in solo.

Or rage inducing games like

Alt F4 is also a fun game but I've never understood the satisfaction behind it unlike completing a hard level in a retro game.

That one indie horror game from one of the earlier booms, Tattletail. It was well executed enough, more well rounded then a lot of titles, there was clearly something being set up for future projects, the audience was intrigued and receptive...and then the team just never did anything beyond the first game. I still kind of scratch my head about that one.
