The Sega CD version of Shadow of the Beast II differed significantly from the Sega Mega Drive (Genesis) version in several key aspects related to graphics, sound, plot, and additional features. In the Sega CD version, the in-game graphics have been slightly improved compared to the Mega Drive. In addition, FMV (Full Motion Video) was added to it — full-fledged story inserts with animation, which were absent in the 16-bit version. These inserts included, for example, an introductory video where an evil wizard turns into a giant owl and kidnaps the main character's sister.
The Sega CD version included character voice acting and a significantly expanded library of sound effects. In the Mega Drive version, the soundtrack was more limited: there was practically no variety of sound effects, and the main sounds were reduced to the main character's attacks, which were described as "drums filtered through someone's colon." :)
There was also a new soundtrack in the Sega CD version. Plot and narrationIn the Sega CD version, the plot has been significantly expanded. Unlike the original game, where there was practically no plot, a context appeared here: an evil wizard kidnapped the main character's sister, and the player must save her. There are friendly NPCs in the game who provide information or help in the search. The player could ask them questions, although it wasn't always helpful. Additional functionsSome areas of the game in the Sega CD version have been redesigned to make them "more honest" (probably meaning improved balance or level logic).
