i know the snes vs mega drive is still a fun debate to get into nowadays, but in terms of each company's influence on the gaming industry as a whole, why does it feel like people keep disregarding just how groundbreaking sega's technology was? yu suzuki straight up invented texture mapping a good two years before doom did with quake, and they made the first game ever to use 3d models just in 1992. even disregarding that, with machines like the r360, sega basically brought amusement park rides to the arcade. so why is it that when big names such as avgn discuss sega, they can only seem to bring up its consoles in the conversation?

I stand by my belief that the SNES was the better consoles with the better exclusives. But I also stand by my belief that the Genesis/Mega Drive versions of games that were released on both, were usually the superior versions.

I'm fairly sure Sega didn't make the first game to use 3D models though.
As a matter of fact... I thought that was Atari with one of their now obscure arcade releases sometime in the late 80s. Although I doubt even that now. The "first" of anything is usually very sketchy and debatable, and I don't care enough to look it up.

Still, you're right. Sega vs Nintendo should never have been a debate to begin with. Everyone knows it was actually NEC vs Nintendo.
...
Oh wait, that was only in Japan. ::eggmanlaugh

In all seriousness though, I get what you mean. They both did a lot, and they both had their pros and cons. To say one is better than the other, is just wrong.

You're talking about I, Robot. I heard it's actually pretty good.

Because Sega themselves marketed the shit out of the Genesis and not a lot else. As a kid in the 90's I didn't even know Sega made anything else other than consoles and console games. We didn't even call it the Genesis we just called it the Sega. It was basically Sega==Sonic and Nintendo==Mario and that was all anyone really gave a shit about.

Nintendo and sega aren't pro consumer anymore, gaben is pro consumer

Namco is Sega's real rival 🗣️
Ridge Racer vs Daytona, the REAL rivalry

Well except Acro
Acro on Genesis was wow
Also Action 52, but when you replace that iconic Cheetahmen music with the music equivalent of slipping on a banana peel, you never had a chance

Because AVGN's whole schtick is about video games, no real reason for him to talk about anything else, he isn't documenting a company's whole history like say Matt McMuscles.

cause obnoxious basement-dwelling manchildren online in the 2000's endlessly gassed up Nintendo and everything Nintendo without considering anything else and it unfortunately had a long lasting effect on gaming discussion

Not AVGN tho Nerd is one of the good ones

The AVGN was literally the Angry Nintendo Nerd when he started, that's what he knows. That guy above me is right too, back in the day retro gaming forums where all about the NES and SNES, very Nintendo-centric. My theory: Sega had a cooler brand image than Nintendo in the Genesis era, so more of the Sega kids grew up to be well-adjusted and didn't end up on Internet forums. Tragically that wasn't my case.

Don't know what that other guy is on about, if you went to the arcades in the '90s you saw Sega games. They led the 3D arcade market, with Namco as their rival in that area. It's not just Daytona USA vs Ridge Racer, it's also Virtua Fighter vs Tekken and Virtua Cop vs Time Crisis.

I was being sarcastic, I didn’t actually think Daytona vs Ridge Racer was the actual big rivalry. That said, I didn’t know about those other two funnily enough. I always thought Virtua Fighter and Tekken kinda just existed separately in different niches since the Saturn never really took off and Tekken rode the high of the PS1’s high sales and always thought both Virtua Cop and Time Crisis were niche franchises that didn’t take off.

In the first line I was talking about the guy who implied nobody knew Sega made arcade games cause they only promoted the Genesis and Sonic. In the second I was addressing the Sega vs Namco rivalry thing instead, which was 100% a real thing. They are the two Japanese companies that went all in on 3D games in the arcades in the early '90s, something most other developers waited on due to the cost of doing it early on. Virtua Fighter was huge in Japan and is the reason Ken Kutaragi decided to bet on 3D primarily with the PS1, so it's essentially the main reason gaming went all in on 3D in that generation. Namco literally hired the number two guy in the VF team, Seiichi Ishii, to create Tekken to compete with VF. VF continued to dominate in Japanese arcades and VF2 was the highest-selling Saturn game in Japan, where the system was not a failure, while Tekken 1 & 2 were system sellers for the PS1 early on, along with Ridge Racers. Those arcade ports were the early killer apps and showcases for the console's power. Tekken 3 went on to be the 5th highest-selling PS1 game worldwide, a huge hit in its day.

Virtua Cop, Time Crisis, and other light gun series like House of the Dead, were all successful in the arcades. That kind of cabinet is expensive, you don't make multiple sequels if you're not sure a bunch of operators are ready to shell out thousands and thousands of dollars to buy them. The home ports had more limited appeal because those games are better enjoyed with a light gun peripheral and in small bursts.

I learned a lot today, I appreciate this

I think , Sega and Nintendo were at first on the same height and field but as Sega lost alot of footing in the game industry (especially in the 32-/64-bit wars) Sony overtook Segas edge , coolness and more broader approach and was the new Sega while Nintendo stayed very well being more innovative , focused and conceptually pushing on their own IPs and territory of games (Sega too but not as frequent like Nintendo) .

In the 16-bit days , both had their awesome , bad and daring games thanks to their third-party support and their own exclusives .

When i go for 16-bit emulation on a modded console or on a different device , i always download SNES and Genesis emus at the same time first .

Both had their own cool games that i always play and when i look at ports , its always a mix between Sega or Nintendo but not entirely on one console .

I think the Bit-wars was way too overblown and both companies were awesome . Overall it was about videogames as a fresh hobby and passion instead corporation-loyality and fan-wars of the cringiest kind , more or less .

i always had the impression that avgn was james rolfe's parody character on people he thought acted really stupidly funny because of video games. outside of the character him and mike matei both looked like they had some pretty deep understanding of video game history; but i suppose i was also talking about modern game reviewers like scott the woz and all that,, it feels like only older dudes like yovideogames really bother to make known sega's older more influential titles via their ports on dreamcast and ps2,,

for the latter half of your comment that is also true,, my father always said it was either daytona or ridge racer back when he was an arcade addict,, maybe there was a reason why nintendo only made the mario and donkey kong games for arcade then dipped,,,

AVGN is a parody but James Rolfe definitely was more into the NES and Atari prior to that growing up.

Nintendo was a toy company for decades prior to making video games so they understood the home consumer market and had long-standing relationships with Japanese department store chains, etc. So once the Famicom started doing well they pulled out of the arcade market pretty quickly as they had too many rivals there while they controlled the home market. Also didn't make sense for them to compete with companies like Namco, Taito, Konami etc. in the arcades while also relying on them to make 3rd party NES games.

I think sadly it's been so long ago that arcades have been in the zeitgeist, people don't really care to give props to that world as much. At least in my neck of the woods, I've yet to see a real arcade renaissance - though a few "barcades" are doing God's work lol.

Upon visiting said barcades, the Sega cabinets are always the show stoppers. If I see House of the Dead - it's on! lol

I love Sega's consoles, but their strength was definitely in badass arcade games. Hell, even with their consoles they usually tried to boast about all their arcade ports.

Also this is post number 100 for me so now I'm level 2! I'm basically a god now.

actually, over in hong kong it looks like sega's trying to revitalise it a bit! theyve recently put out this rhythm game called maimai and my classmates with no experience in any games, sega or not have been crunching in quarters to get a try at it. this is during a time when all the arcades in my area are just full of slot machines where old people try to win money, its especially loud both visually and auditory wise, just like the old days lol. and lets not forget the recent initial d games that sega is still putting out, years after daytonas heyday

and also yeah part of why the dreamcast was a failure was possibly because sega loved arcade games more than profits lol, so many arcade ports.

but a story that kind of gets me in the feels is how not really out of obligation sega saved snk and kof from fading away after jumping back from bankruptcy by giving them the atomiswave which was similar enough to neo geo hardware for snk to make neowave and 2003(at least from what i heard)

but ironically sega themselves probably had a hand in ending the arcade market after they put out the soul calibur port,,,

i never really thought about the third party games part, that actually makes a lot more sense than them being scared of sega lol

yu suzuki was a genius and yes i would agree that the perceived eternal christstruggle was between essentially exclusively namco and sega
you could hear the sounds of virtua fighter and tekken alternating between releases, each refining each other, daytona usa and ridge racer and so on
nintendo and sega only shared a bleeding ground for a short time, and in the home console market exclusively
ironically i do like the super famicom more than the mega drive but the mega drive is my least favourite sega console (insubordinate race)
