I'm mostly referring to the people who go into threads and say things like "lol idc" when I say this. Like I get it, they might be trying to be funny, but at the same time remember the phrase "If you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything" or if they don't have anything to add to the conversation, they shouldn't say anything. Not to mention it's also just plain rude sometimes.

I'm not saying we need like a ban, but I think we need warnings for these people, especially if they're going out of their way to just spam threads.

i disagree, starting to limit comments because they are too "short" IMO, just let people comment or we are gonna turn every comment in this site into a college essay. ::beer
your right, at least it bumps the thread. The site is already dead as is. adding more restrictions would just make this place a corpse

I tend to reserve answers like that for the 'chatterbox' style posts and forum spaces.

Sometimes an older thread needs a bump to stay active and get more attention.

Dishing out warnings, and barring people from the general chatter sections seems pretty extreme. And you can always ignore users that make a habit of bad replies so they don't even show up for you.

I don't think that is entirely the issue. I don't think @Taukyrie (please correct me @Taukyrie if wrong, I don't want to speak for you) would have an issue with someone posting "bump" in a thread or a short reply like "lol wut O_o" when confused (I'll do that myself >_<).

It sounds like the problem is short off topic replies that seem to be intended to derail a thread or could upset others by the curtness? Because the example of "lol idc" is a little aggressive, imo... I haven't encountered that, but I guess make it more clear that a reply like that should be reserved for the chatter board? This is a forum, so if you don't care, and felt that strongly to post that, you should be ready to share why :loldog This isn't an image board...

I'm fine if it's in like chatterbox style posts or if it's to bump a thread, but when a thread is asking "What's your favorite JRPG of all time?" and one of the replies is like "none lol", I think something should be done about that /gen.

This example is extremely helpful because I was wondering what counts as a "spam comment".

Unfortunately it’s not always that simple. Some users are only interested in being a nuisance, and most of the troublemakers back then were attracted to gen chats in particular so limiting it would be a decent middle ground. Plus this forum is for games, not a place to give people a space to dogpile on others. It’s the first rule to not disrespect others. And besides, a warning isn’t the end of the world. It acts as a reminder that rules are being enforced and that rule breaks aren’t really tolerated. If someone has well intentions they shouldn’t worry too much about being warned.

I understand that. The only disrespect I've really seen around here is egregious behavior that absolutely violated the TOS of the forum.

Anything past that has been in good spirits. Issuing a warning for the latter, and removing someone from the more social aspect seems a harsh punishment.

I suppose it's all context. Ideally the moderation team has the ability to properly contextualize the comments or posts in question, and decide the intent behind them. However, rationalizing this through text is rather difficult.

Enacting a rule like this could easily end in people being issued warnings where they're not warranted. I know I'm not a moderator, and I'm fairly new here, but I would exercise caution when treading by rules like this.

I feel like something like this isn't too unreasonable for the on topic boards:
Don't post if you have nothing to say.
This:
when a thread is asking "What's your favorite JRPG of all time?" and one of the replies is like "none lol"
Is a perfect example of posting if you have nothing to say.

That's why 0-point warns were created, actually.

Slaps on the wrist that don't actually hurt a person's ability to use the board, but are meant to remind them of the behavior expected of them.

I personally wouldn't be too keen on issuing these unless it's something truly, deeply wrong and/or repeated, but I like having the option.

Anyways, short comments, and being rude to other users are separate topics.

Rude people will be handled accordingly, regardless of length of their comment.

If i understood correctly, purpose of this thread is spam comments, not rude comments.
So let's keep discussion focused on them:
Comments that are too short, can't be called real contribution to topic, while not being offensive either.

Which is not what we do here. A lot of the people that got banned here were definitely not interested in having a conversation in good faith.

Which is why it’s being discussed to begin with. The thread is a suggestion from a user, and we analyze it through impartial lens to see if it can implemented and what can be gained. No action or decision is being made here.

replies that seem to be intended to derail a thread
Well... shit... Guess I better watch my back then, seeing as I have a nasty habit of doing just that, never intentionally though. That's mostly why I stay out of threads anymore.

I get the need for keeping the trolling down, yeah, it is an annoyance, but really that's all it is. And as @Nebulon_Galaxy said, we don't need restrictions on annoying posts, at least I don't think we do. If it's outright offensive or verbally abusive, I can see, but a new bump to an old thread isn't always a bad thing. It may even resurrect one that's starting to decay in the ground. That's my two cents, anyhow.

Now if you'll pardon me, I've got to catch a train.

I don’t think you’ve done anything wrong.

Necrobumping itself is not an issue and it depends on context really.

Same here >_< I do that all the time unintentionally as well. It is easy to goad me into a distro linux war discussion, for example >_> I was mostly just thinking, when others see a bunch of short posts like that, they get encouraged to do that as well, then there is no discussion: that is what I meant as "derailing". If the discussion goes off topic in a thread, I think that is fine.

::sadkirby I want to see you post more @Zerpina ::heart

so i can't go on a thread and talk about how much i dislike Goldeneye 007 for N64? Damn.
If someone wanted to post this and somehow missed our fifty differently worded "hot takes" threads, no mortal rules can help them, they need divine intervention.

You can, just write something more elaborate that doesn't invalidate other people's experiences.

If you instead just want to type your raw negative feelings about something, I don't see why it shouldn't go to the Hot Takes thread.

I agree, to a certain extent. If nothing else, the goofy, irreverent, and spammy posting could largely stay in Chatter and/or the appropriate threads.
