Very easily the PS1 imo. Though I think a lot of RPGs of that era (and to this day) suffer from cinematic bloat in part due to the increased storage space CDs allotted. SNES RPG's were relatively lean and mean and I get the appeal. I don't think it's a matter of "retro puritanism"(?). Earthbound, FFVI and CT are all-timers. But I look at the PS1 and you've got Suikoden 2, Xenogears, Final Fantasy VII and VIII (yes I'm an apologist for the former), Final Fantasy Tactics, on top of that a ton of supplemental not-necessarily-essential-but-still-enjoyable RPGs like Suikoden 1, Grandia, Lunar 1&2, Parasite Eve, Legend of the Dragoon, Breath of Fire III, Linda^3 etc. Not all of those are PS1 exclusives, granted, but still. I don't think there will ever be a decade of output as legendary as Squaresoft from 91-01, starting with FFIV and ending with FFX.
