Help RetroArch Q&A Thread

I deleted the Windows version because I have the feeling that the issue I mentioned originated when my first PDP controller broke, and since all later installations of RetroArch were done without clearing the Registry data [unlike this time], it’s likely that the program "saved" that error and kept repeating it over and over again…

Anyway, thanks again! ::peacemario
You should have kept it around. You could have used the same files even same saves same cores since steam version has more limited option of cores, and no online updater. I personally keep my desktop installation. Retroarch does not really save anything to registry but it's own config files that could be used. And of course, if you had saves, you could have used those too. And I do not think it was registry or config or anything if it worked on steam version, the error was likely particular way desktop version handles input devices, while steam version uses Steam Input, more standard input method. It might have a frame of input lag or something, or valve has just tuned the system really tight.
Still, quite nice it worked out, I essentially spitballed every idea I had but that one kinda surprises me least, like said it helped me once before.

I thought about keeping both versions, yes, but since I didn't fully trust how the desktop version of RetroArch handles controllers... I decided to "play it safe" and delete it, just in case there was some conflict between versions. Losing the saves is a "minor sacrifice" since I currently use RetroArch to test games and then transfer them to the PS3, so I'm not really losing anything important. ^^

Well, even if you have it around it's controller handlage would not been an issue if you use the steam version. But the benefits outweight anything since when the desktop version is not running it cannot do anything, but definitive plus is the full catalog of RetroArch cores which there is plenty that are not available in steam version.

If you or anyone else is interested in this setup, you can do it manually just with retroarch's menu, in configuration, directories. But after setting up this setup again and again after my windows gets the nuke for one reason or another I just decided to check the retroarch's config.cfg file and these are the entries you have to edit with your favorite simple (or complex) text editor:

Extra shoutout to the ONE SINGULAR entry that is "_path" instead of "_directory"
Also dynamic wallpapers one is not crucial if you do not use them and in my case those are in another folder outside my desktop RA folder anyway.
