Retro games that disappointed you the most.

Xenogears.
Some time ago I was looking for RPG games that could take me away from the monotony of the usual titles I played - Final Fantasy IX, Crisis Core, Dragon Quest XI etc. - and in the end I discover this game complete with an Italian translation completed 1-2 years ago. The adult themes, the fascinating graphics, and the idea of an RPG with mechas intrigued me... it's a shame that a simple mechanic that I personally hate left it abandoned even halfway through the game: the rotation of the view. Too distracting, too many things to look at, too much to explore on a screen cut off at the sides. Because of this, as well as the display of the menus, I never had the courage to start Grandia, which seems like another interesting game to me.
With this obviously I don't mean that it sucks as a game - considered one of the best JRPGs if not the best ever made by the many who have played it, I probably can't get over this thing having not been born in that period and grown up with that type of gameplay .
This is in my top 5 of all time but that comment about the camera? Entirely correct. Their ambition far outstripped their budget and their experience (most of the team, this was their first game). The camera rotation is weird, the platforming is a massive pain, the second disk is a glorified slide show you just read for a few hours with an occasional dungeon, because Square cut the budget and told em to just finish the damn thing already, thus the majority of the story is actually missing...yeah. Xenogears is transcendent at its best moments, and utterly atrocious at its worst, and there's not a lot of in between.

Still needing my remake even with that, Squeenix. GIVE. I'm FIENDIN'.

If they made a remake, I would probably reevaluate it and play it willingly.
(I take this opportunity to apologize for any errors in English, as I don't speak it as my first language and on some occasions I use the translator)

Personally didn't really like Chrono Trigger and I'm not really sure what it was I think it just didn't click with me. I do like a lot of things about it just idk I couldn't like it the same way everyone else does

I played it after i had played many other good rpgs and i was older too, it was decent, but not legendary for me... maybe because there wasn't effect of "the first" for me there, instead, final fantasy 5 was the case for me! i love it more than all other ffs, yet people usually rank it below ff6 and ff4...

Maybe it's not bad if we discuss at what state we played these games?
  • what other games we had played before them?
  • we played them as kid or adult?
  • how was the atmosphere at that time? were there all hype about it around us?
What do you guys think?

Ah some people love some people don´t love it too much, the overall experiece is great, maybe play FFVI or Mystic Quest, with Chrono my method is that i play until i do something i consider important within the story, like beating a boss or finishing a side quest, then i save and play/watch/read something else, try to savor it more slowly so it doesn´t feel like a slog in the long run, same with grinding, 5 or 10 minutes with x10 speed and then stop to see my stats, then i save and rest.

I'm gonna get crucified for this, but:
Xenogears

Maybe I would think differently had it been released in Europe at the time but playing it for the first time now I don't get the appeal, even as someone who's loved all the other PS1 Squaresoft RPGs. It looks great for a PS1 title but when it comes to the presentation and gameplay, the total linearity and lack of freedom, all I see is a sneak-peek into Square's eventual worst qualities as a storyteller.

In contrast I only ever played Symphony of the Night for the first time this year and it totally blew me away.

To chime in on the FF7 discussion: it's hard to appreciate just how monumental this game was at the time. I don't have the perspective of someone playing it for the first time now, but I would go so far to call it an overhyped game, yet not an overrated one. There's plenty of games from that era I can't play anymore because they aged so badly, including other Final Fantasy titles like X. FF7 is one that wins me over again every time with its atmosphere and music alone. The older I get the more I appreciate just how much thought was put into the world and the storyline. So many layers of references and ideas. Not all of it works fully but it's a level of density you don't see that often in a game. Also, as a godless commie I appreciate the whole "capitalism kills the planet, it's time we take direct action" angle.

No crucifixion, immolation or ritual drowning, I promise. I like how open everyone is here, and respect and camaraderie never once left the table, that's why this place is great, that's why you guys are great.

Not disagreeing with you, but as a gentle pushback on the Xenogears angle, it's a very personal game to me. You are right that it is terribly linear, but it is executive meddling that made it less than it could have been, and that hurts my soul, honestly. Among other things, it was once considered as a prototype to FF7 even, so you could tell there was passion behind it and I believe it was by the second disc that the game would have really opened up, but Square cut the funding, and we only got the boss rush because the creators of the game stood their ground.

As for FF7, it is indeed monumental, and still my favorite. Is it perfect? not at all, no Final Fantasy ever is, but FF7 hit all the right notes, and, let's be frank, truly set the franchise onto the world stage. A lot of people just love to hate on it to get some sort of confirmation bias, that's all.
That said, what I'd love see (besides a Xenogears remake that properly represented the creators' vision), is a version of FF7 with all the cut content and abandoned plot threads woven back into it.

I do remember hearing about that. It would have been interesting to play the game as it was originally intended, because it kinda hits all the marks of 32-bit Square that I love, but it just felt like there was something missing so it didn't translate for me.
My personal favorite of that era, Vagrant Story, also had a lot of its content cut. Who knows what unknown treasures lie in Squaresoft's vault. It was an exciting time as a fan when people started to data mine FF7's disc and found so many loose threads.

Right? I still dream of a sort of "FF7 Complete", if you will. At least the PC version mods can breathe some new life into it. I'm especially fond of the ones that make the field models better, IMO's FF7 one true achiles heel.

WITCH!...

...no it is pretty adolescent, with a splash of sex, a bucket of mech violence, and a flood of questioning organized religion that landed pretty hard with teenagers who played it back in the day. I assume that's what made me get through all the jank.

(Not saying I don't still love it though, the early sections are great.)

It touched on a lot of heavy themes, including
unwitting cannibalism, Soylent Green Style, Jungian psychology, slavery, exploitation...
all very mature themes for a game of the era. I don't think it is often given its dues, being overshadowed by its successors.

It did, adolescent might have been a touch dismissive sounding. A replay as an adult had me feeling it doesn't explore any of those themes deeply, but for sure there's nothing else like it.

Also, I hadn't seen enough anime/Japanese television to appreciate some of it when it first released. A lot of the early game feels like a Tomino show, and my personal favorite scene, when Maria runs to Seibzhen to confront you-know-who, is a loving Super Robot homage.

Just to be clear, I wasn't trying to push back on what you said. You are right, it's all very pedestrian and superficial in a sense, I feel because of lack of time to properly develop those plot threads. I'm biased, I won't deny, it blew my mind to actually fight using mecha in an RPG, I loved this to death, so the game grew on me quickly.

Games are all about exploring unexplored aspects of everything...
However, I'm not sure how i feel about some of them...
I mean, things like encouraging crime, unethical acts, murder and such are all understandable...
But... A court being managed by younger ones?!?

I guess it needs to make sense in the context of the fiction to convey right message. I wrote something smart but I'm having a hard time thinking of an example LOL

Final Fantasy Tactics
I mean, the game isn’t bad, but it just feels very generic, and the story was the same. Maybe if I try the game again, it could be a different experience, but for now, I’m not in the mood for that.
(And I’m not even an FF fan, so maybe that was it, lol.)

YES! im a big FF fan but i really hated that stupid game, i think i was expecting a regular FF game even though it clearly says Tactics

I think it does what it sets out to do well, but I can understand your expectations being deflated by the genre shift. It doesn't help that it hinges on some pretty questionable mechanics in places.

yeah i think it could be worth a revisit as i judged it for what its not and not for what it is

I have a similar problem with Xenoblade. Deep down I wish it would have been what Xenogears couldn't live up to, so I kind of wrinkle my nose at it, but I know it's a good game in its own right.

I try to look past what I don't like in games, but Dragon View was too different to Drakkhen to keep my interest. I enjoyed Xenogears (especially its aesthetics and soundtrack) but felt the storytelling fell short of the Blade hexalogy in every regard (while trying to tell the same story.)

Do you mean the first one or the series?

The series as a whole.

Persona 4. Felt underwhelming, underdeveloped, etc. Neither the story nor the gameplay could hook me in time for the "real" game to get going (I understand this one takes its time to do so).
(e: feels odd treating this as retro, since it was a late-00s release even in Japan)

Back when i was a teenager, i looked for hours and was unable to find the Gargoyles video game for Genesis, in cartridge or rom. This was back in 1998 or so. I was a huge fan of the show back in the day.

Alas when i finally got ahold of the game and tried it out, the game was a somewhat difficult platformer where you only played as Goliath, during an attack on the castle (that didn't happen in the show), and due to limited cartridge sizes had no plot other than 'beat the bad guy'.

Graphically Goliath looks great... and the city and world looks great. But at 3 levels and it being so limited to effectively the other Disney properties (Aladdin, Lion King, Toy Story, etc) relegated to just weak platformers with the skin of something you loved.

A combination Batman beat-em-up with story and quests in several locations and being more than one gargoyle would have probably felt much better.

Bet they could have really used the SegaCD and it's room to put in animated portions, plenty of text/dialog on par with a modern shovelware title (like Is it wrong to to pick up girls in a dungeon) and had enough unique enemies/areas in multiple timeframes and a few branching storylines to keep you busy and happy for weeks.

Nights Into Dreams, I had these ridiculous expectations for it as it was often touted as "the crowning jewel of the Saturn" but ultimately by the time I played it, it ended up being a game with a very shallow gameplay loop with some comforting visuals.

I remember Nights. Borrowed a Saturn while i was considering buying it from a friend. Nights and Mortal Kombat 2 were among the games.

As a kid the flying around was plenty fun. Today when i tried it? The video was so low resolution (vs the CRT i played originally on) that it looks terrible (and you can't hardly identify anything). And the story is non-existent, you are just dropped in to start collecting stars.

The Wii version is higher resolution and more filled out it seems, tried the tutorial level and it looked much nicer. But haven't felt like fully playing it yet.
