Retro games that disappointed you the most.

Mega Man 2.

I had no expectations for it, and still, it disappointed me with how bland, generic, and just plain poorly designed it was.
it's not a bad game by any means but i agree it's pretty flawed and SO overrated, just don't talk to people saying it's the best megaman ever or calls megaman "blue bomber" unironically QJGBJSHGADJSGADJHGASJDG

For me, it's Legacy of Kain. A buddy hyped it up a lot, but I hated every minute playing it. The camera was either too close or too far away to properly see what's happening, the controls were stiff as hell, there's no invincibility frames so enemies can get several hits in on you at a time, and the menu were designed by someone that never played a game before. Who the hell hides the "Load Game" inside of the "Options" menu?!

One I can think of is Final Fantasy 8.

Having loved 7 and mistakenly thinking 8 would be a blast given its similar modern aesthetic, rarely have I found myself more disappointed:

the systems make no sense and you either break the game early by overplaying a stupid side game for a unwarranted power spike or you play normally and get completely sputtered by the late game.

It's a bit of a love-hate relationship. I love that you can break the game and make it beyond piss-easy. I hate that you pretty much have to and that you have to play that stupid card game for hours to do it. But it does feel good to smash that mech that chases you out of Dollet.

Kinda reminds me of the cope people had after XIII came out. 'It gets good 30 hours in, I swear'

Final Fantasy Tactics
I mean, the game isn’t bad, but it just feels very generic, and the story was the same. Maybe if I try the game again, it could be a different experience, but for now, I’m not in the mood for that.
(And I’m not even an FF fan, so maybe that was it, lol.)

Well, to be fair, it's partially my fault. Expectation is very narrow and easy to frustrate. Can FF7 be broken? absolutely, but it doesn't actively work against organic play.

There are some mods for the PC version of FF8 that change the game to play closer to the norm, like Ragnarok. I quite like them, bit a purist will argue its not FF8 anymore, which would be true.

FF8 not being itself can be both good or bad, again it boils down to expectations.

Just about every Fromsoft Souls game. Bloodborne and Sekiro being the exceptions to those. I understand that the point is to struggle and persist. But I can't do that when my character moves like a turtle that got into someone's misplaced meth. Rolling sucks, Swinging your weapon sucks. But then Bloodborne and Sekiro are actually fun to play. Very strange. I don't think any of the games are bad. Pretty good actually. Just not for me. My favorite Souls-Like is Nioh 2. Game is very snappy and technical in a way that doesn't make me feel like I'm being purposely crippled for the sake of keeping the game difficult.

Oh, you mentioned souls, and reminded me of Shining Soul! coming from Shining Force 2, playing them was really disappointingly... yet I played both 1 and 2 of them lol!

They are good games in their own right, but after Shining Force 3, Shining became just a brand without identity rather than a venerable series, and that saddens me.

Out of all IPs where something like this happened, Shining is the truest case of it. Every shining game is connected by an extremely thin vague thread of similarity/relevance

Mine were the two NES sequels to Batman made by Sunsoft, but now a guy released some hacks so i might give them a second chance.

Hope the mods add them to the Repo, seems like it might improve the awful experience of the two sequels.

The thing about 8 is that they wanted to capture 7´s light and it shows, and honestly even grinding becomes tedious in the late game, but it´s not impossible, i usually grind for like 10 or 15 min with turbo speed and problem solved, same with the card game, play it fast so you don´t get bored.

Well, the soul reaver 1 and 2 remaster came out and YES OH GOD YES there´s an option to play it with the original graphics.

Hokuto no Ken series for SNES: not so much from a graphic or playability point of view (they are decent 1vs1 fighting games), but because I was expecting some jrpg that reflected the animated series, like the previous titles for NES (which unfortunately have both shitty sound and graphics)... 🤷‍♂️

Nights Into Dreams

Final Fantasy 8

Jak 2 among these is the biggest culprit, considering the year. Jak 2 feels like a genuine bad game but people don't stress it enough because of brand name. Like, I played this for the first time 3 years ago. & this game commits the sins of escort missions & needless backtracking multiple times. The cutscenes are extremely well done though, anything with Daxter anyway.

But my agreements end here because...

Parasite Eve

Fromsoft Souls game

I'll defend Xenosaga with my life! Was just talking about classic space animes in another thread & Xenosaga offers a unique story on the same tier as some of those. & the history behind the games is as interesting as the games themselves. They're not perfect but at the same time it's one the best experiences I've had with games.
As for the other 2, look, I'm not about to worship them like other folks but, I like action games. Parasite Eve 2 might also be one of the best action games out there!

And now, I'd like to open a can of worms with Legend of the Dragoon, Rogue Galaxy & the Tales Of series, because I have a lot of beef with them.

People give 2 TOO much credit, for me 3 is where it picked up momentum and 4 is just great, not only for the soundtrack which is GORGEROUS but also in general, from level design to story.

This. Mega Man 2 did codify the franchise in many ways but I feel is largely overrated. To me Mega Man 4 is where the series hit its stride: it has an excellent balance of challenge, difficulty and freshness.

Also i saw the opinion about FF7 that most of the guys here have and i have just one thing to say...i agree, 7 is good but it´s always overrated as the best one, hell i saw the Maximilian Dood vid (the ps1 best game ranking) where one of his friends said "FF never got good past 7" and i was like "But 9 exists?, in the same console even", i mean, yeah i like 7, it´s good, but my eternal love goes to 6 and 9, man those two rocked the heck out of my world.

Even as a lover of FF7 I'd never call it the best, it's very relative after all. Is it my most beloved Final Fantasy? yes, but because of circumstances that had absolutely nothing to do with the game itself and thus are not objective: It was my first PS1 game, it was my first big RPG ever and because of this I was very emotionally invested.

The 'me" from back then would absolutely tell you there is no better one; the 'me' of today will tell you that is very good, but several entries stand toe to toe with it.

So here we have Chrono Trigger. Probably the most over hyped JRPG of all time imo. When I first tried to play it as an early teen, I just did not understand what the hype was even about. Silent Protag, stupid Frog talking like a bad Shakespeare play which was annoying because he was the only character in his time period that talked like that, and the writing was not drawing me in at all.
Nah Chrono deserves what it has, it´s good, just plain good, like chocolate ice cream, not a single drop of bad on that cone, give it a chance, the part that hooked me up with the game was the prison escape after the first past quest.
