I used to dislike having b&w and wanted Super Gameboy pseudo-colouring and "DX" romhacks yet I think that some games, especially with the LCD afterimage effect via emulation, really gives some "surreal" effect like when you play an early 5th gen game on a CRT.

Maybe it's nostalgia or an acquired taste than anything else but it's interesting how devs sometimes managed to compensate for that technical handicap to offer fun games in the palm of the hands.

I recently looked into the original version of Link's Awakening as I've only ever played the DX version (and the Switch remake) and I thought it was really cool how certain tiles had other patterns to account for the lack of color.
Even though I prefer DX it was interesting to see the economical use of the much more limited GB palette.

i like both the original GB versions and the "DX" versions. I like that emulators can even let you choose what palette you want. I like the old pea green soup look because it's more like my fat brick of a Game Boy. lol

Oh, I can tell. I once had a short stint in certain type of place that receives and resells (good) electronics. I found a old all-in-one PC that had monochrome, Black and white screen that had CGA translation layer. That thing made something like Alleycat look amazing. Space Invaders (clone) stunning and so much more. If you love that shit, you need to get your hands on some of those types of setups though aside finding the Zenitch EazyPC, you likely need a Black&White CRT monitor (likely real rare) and a hercules adapter for it (also real ass rare).

Yup, i also tend to play them in original green filter, to see what they actually looked like in OG hardware

I wouldn't want to play them any other way since it's about nostalgia for me. I spent many hours playing Tetris (mainly because it was bundled with the system and I didn't have money for games), Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, and Earthworm Jim. The only thing that sucked about Game Boy back then was the lack of a backlight, which is why I had one of these chunkers attached to it:

@Ikagura i prefer the DX or colored version, it just looks better pops better and it just makes it look better, i dont know why you would play a inferior version in my opinion. ::thumbsupwario

I have played DX at first (and the Switch remake) yet the black and white enhances the feeling of being in a dream.

Sometimes technical limitations are for the best in a game.

I always try to replicate the OG screen but it never looks right.

No matter which system i emulate i always go the most accurate route.Shaders and 4k on N64 or PSX ? No way !

There's a charm in the original Game Boy aesthetic, I agree, there's a bit of a dismissal of them compared to SGB/GBC versions.

On the otherhand, I'm glad you said "black and white" though, I will go on record as being a great hater of the pea soup coloring of the original DMG

SGB was fine to give a pseudo colouring for late GB games but I can appreciate the work with the limitations.

Why was it green? It was less expensive? I prefer B&W because it's more neutral (well technically it's black, white and two shades of grey but quadrichromatic would be too long to say each time).

IIRC, it's not even the screen that's green, it's a polarizing film they put on top of it that was green. I think it had something to do with Nintendo feeling it was easier to view in direct sunlight than a purely black and white one. The Game Boy Pocket was actually black and white, so perhaps they got a higher quality LCD screen for that product that had better viewing.

There's definitely a certain charm to it -- my one Gameboy game is actually on this category and I always enjoyed playing it because of how fun and simple it looked. It's also why I keep returning to the first generation of Pokemon games, too. My limit is Yellow's tinting of the screen to represent different towns and cities.

I wish all games were like that.

And this is a good thing that the NSO allows the Pocket background colour.

Emulators should allow both the SGB, the GBP, the GBL and every GBC palette choices imo

I like the slight beige tint for the Pocket, it's "sweeter" to the eyes than plain white.
