I used to dislike having b&w and wanted Super Gameboy pseudo-colouring and "DX" romhacks yet I think that some games, especially with the LCD afterimage effect via emulation, really gives some "surreal" effect like when you play an early 5th gen game on a CRT.

Maybe it's nostalgia or an acquired taste than anything else but it's interesting how devs sometimes managed to compensate for that technical handicap to offer fun games in the palm of the hands.

I recently looked into the original version of Link's Awakening as I've only ever played the DX version (and the Switch remake) and I thought it was really cool how certain tiles had other patterns to account for the lack of color.
Even though I prefer DX it was interesting to see the economical use of the much more limited GB palette.

i like both the original GB versions and the "DX" versions. I like that emulators can even let you choose what palette you want. I like the old pea green soup look because it's more like my fat brick of a Game Boy. lol

Oh, I can tell. I once had a short stint in certain type of place that receives and resells (good) electronics. I found a old all-in-one PC that had monochrome, Black and white screen that had CGA translation layer. That thing made something like Alleycat look amazing. Space Invaders (clone) stunning and so much more. If you love that shit, you need to get your hands on some of those types of setups though aside finding the Zenitch EazyPC, you likely need a Black&White CRT monitor (likely real rare) and a hercules adapter for it (also real ass rare).

Yup, i also tend to play them in original green filter, to see what they actually looked like in OG hardware
