Game Description:

This a port of the original Rayman to DSiWare. While the developer Junglevision's own website says this is a port of the GBA version with enhancements, the Rayman fan encyclopedia wiki says this is a port of the PC version. I'm not sure which one is correct but probably the one stated by the developer.

This game is by no means a decent way to play Rayman and the camera jank ruins the experience by a ton. Making it a nightmare of taking leaps of faith and getting cheap shot by enemies and bosses. Nintendo Life harshly (or maybe suitably) rated this game a 5/10.

Despite that since this is one of the noteworthy DSi titles I figured there's no reason it shouldn't be on the repo.

For a list of differences, you can check the fan wiki page for it here.

How to Play:

(Using the MelonDS DS core in RetroArch)
  1. Make sure you have the MelonDS DS core installed in RetroArch (the one that has DS twice in the name, it's the better one imo)
  2. Download the bios files required for DSi emulation from this page (you will need to find NAND versions for the region matching the version you get, I dunno where the Japan NAND can be found)
  3. You will need to rename the files according to what the Core Information page for the core in RetroArch says. With the core loaded go to Information -> Core Information from the menu to see it.
  4. The bios files go into your RetroArch System directory (C:\RetroArch-Win64\system if on Windows with default install location)
  5. In Core Options for MelonDS make sure that Boot Mode is set to Direct instead of Native in the System section
  6. Load the zip containing the .nds file and the game should boot up and play fine.
Included are .cia versions that can be installed on a custom firmware enabled 3DS using FBI.

Funny, the PS2 version is the only one I didn't get to play yet, I was going to play through it eventually to see for myself but perhaps you can enlighten me.

But yes, I can confirm, Rayman 2 on PS1 is a completely different game, for example here's the final boss

Quite different, but the entire game is different, not particularly better imo but not a bad game either, if you had to play only one version I recommend the DC version over it but I do recommend giving it a try too if you wanted a different take on the game.

As for Rayman DS and Rayman 3D I played both and can confirm they are the same game as the N64/DC but with shitty framerate and some glitches, for example you cannot get the 1000th yellow lum without glitching your way, I do not recommend them.
The PS2 version has greatly expanded levels and it has hub worlds. It also adds more cutscenes and dialogue. Also new bosses and minigames. It also has an upgrade system.

Wow, and I thought the PS1 version was a cut down version. I guess Caddicarus and AntDude were wrong. I’ve only played the PS2 version. I know that the PS1 Version has hilariously bad voice acting compared to the PS2 version.

Slightly related but so many influencers and journalists would have you believe that Rayman 2 on PS1 is an inferior port of the N64/DC version, I know I was tricked for many years, even AntDude pretty much lied about it saying "it's only half of the game" and I took his word until I played it and this is BULLSHIT!

Rayman 2 on PS1 is a completely different game from Rayman 2 on N64/DC calling it half of the game is the same as calling Sonic Unleashed on Wii half of the game from the XBox 360, Rayman 2 on PS1 is a similar case to Donald Duck Goin' Quqckers on PS1, a completely different game that happens to share the same name, same boxart, and same story, do not be fooled.

PS1 Rayman 2 is a competent game on its own, but if you had to play only one pick the DC version, which is also the same as the N64 and the same game as Rayman DS and Rayman 3D though those two ports kinda suck, same game but with bad performance and some glitches, at least Rayman 3D has a nice 3D effect that can be useful in the flying levels but aside from that stick with the DC version imo and maybe give the PS1 version a try one day.

Also no, the Jaguar version is NOT the best one. I been gaslighted by that 1 YT video to try it. After 100% it I can confidently say, while it's a cool experience, PSX an PC clear it easily, and it's obvious those are the real Rayman 1 in devs' eyes

I've always heard that this version was a GBA port, but what about the GBA version, which version was it a port of?

Today it's known that the best version is the Atari Jaguar one, which was on cartridge, it would have been easier to port it than the PS1/Saturn versions.

On the PS1 and Saturn they destroyed the level design, and trying to improve the physics made it even worse.
GBA, DS, ISO, basically all versions released after the PC one are based on it and never PSX. Easiest way to tell;

1. Look at the Pink Plant Woods BG. If it has a yellow bush to the right (which PC introduced as it has redrawn BGs), it's based on it

2. Bongo Hills' 1st level includes a new segment where you walk on the ground upwards, connecting both worlds, sorta (this is absent in GBA for some reason)

So the only unique versions of R1 are Jaguar, PSX and PC. Stuff like Saturn, PSX JP, etc. are just off-shoots

I never played the Jaguar version but the music for the PS1 version is very iconic.

Honestly, I quite liked the iOS version, you get several quality of life improvements such as unlimited lives, quick loading screens, some extra cutscenes taken from Rayman Jr. and a life bar for bosses, unfortunately it's been delisted but I still have it and when I turn off wifi and fire it up it still works.

Did they make an Android equivalent of that? I'm not an Apple user

The GBA port is based on the MS-DOS PC version. It apparently has a bit of data from the PS1 version but it's mostly based on the original PC one

weirdly enough this port doesn't works on an actual DSi with homebrew.. Well not a great loss seeing the comment section.
Also hoping for that particular castlevania DSi game to be uploaded!
Are you referring to Soul of Darkness? It's a decent Castlevania clone for DSiWare. There isn't an actual Castlevania game for DSi.

Bro, this version sucks. I dunno how this affects playing the game on emulators but on DSi, they thought it was necessary to make it so every single checkpoint takes an actual photo of your face every time you reach it. On top of that, there's the issues raised in the description, they tweaked the level design to be worse, and the audio is completely screwed up. I'd recommend the anniversary edition over this, to be honest.
I guess they take a picture of your to see our disappointed faces. Honestly, i’d rather play this over the Game Boy Color version.

Wish you can play DsiWare games on Delta. It’s such a pain in the ass setting them up on Retroarch iOS.

Dsi version of cave story, earthworm jim and cute the rope the next time😄👍👍👍
Good choices. I think today was a productive day for me on the Repo (I updated 2 translations and added 3 original posts) I'll see about adding those tomorrow. The Cave Story one in particular is very much worth adding. Despite other ways to play it, it has the alternative official localization translation that I prefer over Aeon Genesis' old translation

Why does it say port, isn't this the official DSiWare version or am I mistaken? Also playing this on my 3DS a while back I'm most certain this is not based on the GBA version.
It's an official port ::winkfelix
Also this is said to be based on the GBA version. Here's from the developer's website:

Lol "easier to play than the original" (cough) bullshit...

I still vividly remember the unmutable camera noise every time I reached a checkpoint. Man this version sucked.
