AEW entertained me i got bad news on sunday morning so i understand. i stayed up late to watch the cena v lesnar match and felt they rehashed their 2014 squash match it has done nothing for cena and his retirement tour at all makes me believe cena will work through to wrestlemania to redeem how this has all panned out.

There are no top stars at all when he goes its pretty much over so i can guarantee the saudi guys keep him for at least 1 show a year.

Cena was never a top star. Half of the WWE fanbase hated him for years and I'm pretty sure the company lost lots of fans because of him. Somehow Cody is over with live crowds even though he's worse than Cena in every way. Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar are the only good top guys they have and they're part time

I miss Hogan, Rock, and Austin.

It makes sense he got this far because he’s charismatic and has underdog appeal, but he’s an okay-ish performer and a half decent speaker with only occasional some memorable segments. Bryan outclasses him in the ring and Roman is better at the mic.

basically yeah. I like Cody but he’s basically a midcarder with insane luck, reach and connections. It makes sense he got this far because he’s charismatic and has underdog appeal, but he’s an okay-ish performer and a half decent speaker with only occasional some memorable segments. Bryan outclasses him in the ring and Roman is better at the mic.

Yeah, Bryan had that connection with fans that Cena and Cody never had. It's the sort of thing you can't teach, it's that "it" factor. Similar to guys like Dusty Rhodes and Mick Foley. It got Bryan so over in 2014 that fans were literally demanding WWE to push him. Punk was over back in 2011 too as a rebel against the bland, corporate WWE (ironic given what a sellout he is now), but it was nothing compared to Bryan in 2014 though IMO. That was an amazing thing to witness. Bryan got more over than Cena. I think he was the most over guy WWE has had in the past 10-15 years, but he unfortunately had health issues getting in his way. Plus, Vince clearly was more invested in Roman than Bryan.

It's kind of funny to me still seeing WWE vs AEW tribalism online in some places when neither company is putting its best foot forward these days. Like you're getting mediocrity either way, it's just a matter of which flavor of mediocrity you want.

It's also the era that has undeniably aged the worst for anything not in the ring. So many edgelord-ass gimmicks and promos, the rise of the authority figures and the 20 minute promos to open each show. I was there at the time so I get having an appreciation for it in the "aw man, remember that" way, but I look at it way more in a "what the hell were they thinking" kind of way.

Not that today is any better, no one's going back to watch 2018 raw episode for nostalgia in 2038, unless they need a sedative

I think the 80s was the best era. I don't know whether or not it was as successful as the Attitude Era, but wrestling was pretty mainstream, wrestlers felt like actual stars (Hogan, Macho Man, Miss Elizabeth, Sgt Slaughter, Captain Lou Albano, etc.) and it's not as cringey to go back to so long as you don't mind things being a little more wholesome and kid friendly. There's no denying though that the in ring is better in modern wrestling, but there are downsides to that. Sometimes things look too choreographed and too video gamey. Matches get absurd with people kicking out of a billion finishers. And while I appreciate that there are stricter safety standards now to avoid concussions and certain injuries, those same things have led to wrestling looking more fake. Like you can always see wrestlers putting their hands up now for kicks to the head and chair shots. The illusion is thinner now than it was in the 80s and 90s.

Oh, and of course there's also the issue of social media pissing on the grave of kayfabe along with stupid, behind the scenes wrestling shows that no one asked for. Those are other things I don't like with modern era pro wrestling.

I think part of it too is the camera work. I didn't watch for a long time so I don't know exactly when it shifted, but they used to be able to hide almost every big whiff or botch. Going live also likely didn't help, because there's something to be said for editing. I really remember everything looking pretty tight and snug, but you know that even in the golden era, there were guys who threw punches like Shane McMahon, heh.

I pretty much agree with all of that. I also like Cody, but I just don't buy into him as an underdog babyface. It's a little bit like Cena in the old days, where it never really feels like he is going to lose. I can't argue with how everybody else loves the guy though.

They basically wanted to say, "See what we can offer you if you leave AEW"

Take away his AEW status and his last name and they would have just had him be this guy again

I don't know. I do respect the guy for getting out there and making a name for himself after leaving WWE in 2016. But yeah, there's an air of "artificial" to him at the very least.
