We have a Random game button. The challenge is simple:
1. Press the button (located on the right in The Repository or at the bottom of the page for mobile)
2. Get the result and play it for an hour or 2 (at least)
3. Report back here with your experience.

Rules are also simple:
You may procure the version in your native language if needed (and if it exists)
You may hit the button again if it is not available in your language.
You may hit the button again if the result is not for a console you already have configured on your device.
If you do end up hitting the button again let us know what game it was and why you had to pass on it.
Remember this is for fun, no competition, no judgement, just a bit of harmless chaos to pass the time.

Happy Gaming! :)

My condolences to those who got something like Medal of Honor: Underground on the GBA

I love challenges like this; so I pressed the button and got THIS.

The opening cinematic is so much like a Jackie Chan B-Movie.
Actually, scratch that, the whole game so far is like it! You can tell the devs really knew what they were doing.

The combat is pretty smooth, and seems to let you combo between punches and kicks. (Though I've only beaten the first level so far.)

But the thing that sells it the most is just how the characters are animated, it's hilarious. Think of a roblox/minecraft animation style and body, but far before that era. Again, the opening cinematic is just great.

The face of greatness.

I'll be heading to bed, but I should get back to this soon!

Ok! Got my game!

Had to pass on the first suggestion (Gundam Battle Universe) because I don't own a PSP, but I'm actually super excited about this.

Good luck Waffles, that's probably going to be a looong one!

Okay, my game was Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout (USA) for the PS1.

In a word, it was, painful.

If felt like it was one of those "still getting used to this new 3D thing" for everything excluding the intro which was just bits and bobs from the series. It looked fairly good for what it was, but the DB RPG's on the NES had faster combat.

It was a no frills 3D fighter from before 3D fighters found their legs.

So, yea, painful.

Art of Fighting! Seems heavily inspired by Street Fighter. It's okay. The music sounded really well in my headphones. I'm not very good at fighting games, but I played through the campaign as Ryo(Ryu). I tried some random battles in 1P vs COM, but I always devolved to my strat of jump kicks and throws. lol Not a bad first random game overall. I tapped out at an hour.

I am terrible at racing games and rarely play them, so of course I ended up with this.

I played as Carl Fogarty and my first race went absolutely terribly, but I was determined to win at least one. The game itself actually controls pretty smoothly, but it took a while before I was able to take turns at a good speed without going off the track. In the end, after many attempts, I decided to settle for second...

Very well... the game I drew was Need For Speed III: Hot Pursuit for the PlayStation 1.

I actually took this as a personal challenge because NFS III was the first driving game I had ever become addicted to, going at it for hours as a tween, only stopping when my PC's CD drive literally couldn't take it anymore. In other words, the PSX version had gigantic shoes to fill.

And it didn't fill them.

I wasn't expecting this version to measure up to its PC counterpart, but it was kind of a sad effort regardless of the inferior technology used to run it. The game actually made me feel its title through the absolute NEED FOR SPEED it evoked on me... and how could it not? It felt slow and sluggish, with every turn I made reminding me of what it felt like to be driving a tank. A good-looking, overpriced tank at that.

When I worked as a game reviewer one of the biggest challenges was stopping at the one-hour mark because, more often than not, all I wanted was to keep going, but that simply wasn't allowed. This, though? Reaching the required hour took every ounce of gaming prowess I had on me and it actually reminded me of when I finally go to try Test Drive 4 after years of goshing over the demo... and you know what happened then? I deleted the whole thing after two races because it wasn't doing it for me. The biggest illusions often end in big disappointments, and as someone who currently doesn't have a PC, I was really looking forward to having the NFS III experience again. But not like this, man. I'd rather not play it again than playing a butchered version of it.

But because I wanted a second opinion (and maybe to go a little easier on this title), I handed the controller to the Queen, herself: my four-year-old. We often play Burnout: Revenge together, so her verdict shouldn't really come as a surprise: she didn't like it at all, either (but she did enjoy crashing the car around, which I guess counts for something).

I'm sorry if this is super negative, but I wanted to be honest. I think the game would have been a lot better in my eyes if I didn't know the PC version, but it is what it is.

Hey I love video games, what a fun idea!

1734335511067.png

....shit.

A pseudo-3D racing game, Road Rash developers at EA saw the success of Sega's Hang On and Out Run and thought "Where's the punch button?" Million dollar idea well in hand, a new franchise was born. Success begat imitation, even in the same company. To the basic premise of a race where you can attack the competition with fists, feet, sticks and nunchucks, this game adds grabbing the bumpers of passing cars to hop a ride and slingshot ahead of the pack.

Hither came Skitchin', elbow pads in hand, to skitch and skate with gigantic melancholies and tubular mirth, to shred the graffiti'ed thrones of the earth under his inline skates-clad feet.

A promising start, if Bonks Big Adventure showed the same care for it's players, I'd still have my good looks.

Not sure I've seen *that* credited in a video game before. Kinda cool.

"A skate in the park" He's not the best color man in the league for nothing, folks!

The first race *was* a skate in the park though, this game is actually a fair bit easier to get used to than Road Rash, and the animation, rotoscoped from actual skate hooligans that EA recorded, is genuinely impressive looking for games of the time.

1734337801639.png

The winner has to go to Denver? Can I just get a giant check?

Yet to Denver we go, after buying some knee pads and skates. Do they help or improve performance? No fucking idea, maybe it was in the manual?

1734338093634.png

...new skates didn't help much. Second times a charm?

1734338191324.png

Oh.

Y'all, play Skitchin'. The music and sound effects aren't much, but it's animation is great, it feels less stiff to control than the original Road Rash, the slingshot mechanic on passing cars is surprisingly fun, and you can hit ramps and do tricks to impress judges like The Spectre. Don't you want The Spectre to think you're cool?

1734338590884.png

"Self-confidence is cool, you don't have to prove anything to me."

This fucking guy.
