Hello, I have finished my backlog entirely and I have been meaning to get more use out of my PSP and Vita. What games should I play?
Favorite Genres; JRPGS, VNs, Hack N Slash, Puzzle, Strategy, and shmups.
(also, for those curious, the next poll is tommorow)
Fate Zero Chibi GIF

while inferior to Black, Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus is a solid port if you don't have the option to play Black, Sigma Plus is a very good option in fact, the version included in Master Collection uses Sigma Plus as basis

VC3. It has a eng patch and you don't have to had played any other VC games before

There are many PSP games I would recommend, but I want to stick strictly to exclusive games as much as I can. The only one which was released for PC years later is the Agarest Senki Marriage, but I strongly recommend it. Prinny games are a lot of fun, but prepare to have a hard time with them. I still don't know how I could finish them, since these are quite out of my comfort zone regarding difficulty :O

It's the cutest VN you'll ever read, oh what's that on the bottom left? Just ignore that, I'm sure you play GTA as kids.

Back to normal person again, since other already recommend what I wanna recommend, then I'm going to fill in anything unmentioned. Shadow of Destiny is basically VN (linear storytelling), honestly, so that's fit for your criteria.

I liked the PSP port of Tekken. 5 more than the PS2 version. There's also a mod that restores the ps2 soundtrack and textures so you get the new features of the psp port with the superior graphics and music of the ps2 version. There's decent ports of the Metal Slug games for PSP. I also enjoyed a dungeon crawler called Elminage that's very reminiscent of the Wizardry games'

On Vita I liked Mortal Kombat and Dead Or Alive. It also has some good dungeon crawlers, Demon Gaze 1 & 2, Operation Abyss and Operation Babel.

ryukishi writing this is probably not even one of the most bizzare things to come out of it

i really haven't played many psp games in a while. the ones i did back in the day i don't remember too fondly or they where already mentioned in this thread.

as for birth by sleep, its ok. the psp has to load for a few seconds for the form shifts. the hd versions just feel better to play with with a greater frame rate and better controls. if you really want to play that version then sure. i think the non final mix version has an exploit with the tornado spell, but im not sure. you should really play an english patched version of final mix, it has an extra episode.

Jrpgs for PSP: Tales of phantasia x, tales of eternia, final fantasy type 0, cladun, nayuta no kiseki

hack and slash for PSP: God of war ghost of Sparta, God of war chains of Olympus, x men origins wolverine, Dante's inferno, undead knights, ghost rider

Other games I recommend for psp: Hatsune Miku project diva (all), dead head Fred, pursuit force, Kenka banco, snoopy vs red varón, fate unlimited codes, Naruto ultimate ninja impact, twisted metal head on, assassin's Creed bloodlines, guilty gear judgment, gurumin a monstrous adventure, kuro hyou 1 and 2, god eater, lord of arcana, mortal Kombat unchained, manhunt 2, marvel ultimate alliance, silent hill origins, resistance retribution, soul calibur broken destiny,

Warning, wall.

I've posted two links to /v/'s recommendations site. Given the source, be advised about language used, but I've yet to find another source for recommendations in this format. A setup like GameFAQs' Game Rankings only tells you what is 'good', but 'why' will require digging through user reviews. Use these for a good place to start, anyway. Remember to check the tabs at the top for PlayStation Network and Japan-only titles.

PSP list

PS Vita list

I don't have any personal recommendations for the Vita since I've never played it, but for PSP...

JRPGs
  • Crisis Core - Final Fantasy VII (action RPG; set before the events of Final Fantasy VII)
  • Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep (action RPG; has three playable protagonists who follow their own plots in the same worlds at different times; Final Mix has more content and an English translation)
  • Final Fantasy (turn-based)
  • Final Fantasy II (turn-based)
  • Final Fantasy IV - The Complete Collection (Active Time Battle; includes the entirety of FF4 and The After Years plus a short Interlude chapter) I haven't beaten this one, but it's very bang-for-your-buck.
  • Persona 3 Portable (turn-based) I haven't beaten this one either, but I did beat P3FES on PS2. Has two protagonists with their own set of events over the course of the game.
  • Phantasy Star Portable (action RPG, related to Phantasy Star Universe on PS2/PC)
  • Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity (includes base game and Japan-only expansion; has English translation)
  • Star Ocean: First Departure (action RPG; remake of the SNES game in Star Ocean 2's style)
  • Star Ocean: Second Evolution (action RPG; sequel to above but with entirely new cast, also has two protagonists with their own scenes that follow the same plot)
  • Tales of Eternia (action RPG; port of the PS1 game, unsure of changes)
  • Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology (action RPG; big series-wide crossover; sequels lack a translation)
  • Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth (sidescrolling dungeons with turn-based RPG combat that is reminiscient of fighting games(???); has some focus on the humans who die to become your party members since you're gathering souls to fight in a war of the gods and can be bleak and depressing at times. Also on PS1)
  • Ys Seven (action RPG with three party members and 3D platforming; I remember the final boss was especially difficult because of how healing items work no it can't be my lacking game skills to blame)

VNs
  • -- (got nothing, sorry)

Hack N Slash
  • Alien Syndrome (I haven't played this in forever, but I think it was kinda Diablolike. The game's surprisingly long, and you have a support robot you can feed your junk to in order to make new items, at least. I liked it, but it didn't impress most)
  • Dungeon Siege: Throne of Agony (Diablolike RPG with three playable characters and includes a branched class-change system plus single AI ally)
  • Dynasty Warriors (quasi-strategy too, very cut-down from console versions, but this isn't a port? Instead of wide open maps, you move node to node and spend a time resource in the process, getting into fights)
  • Dynasty Warriors Vol. 2 (mostly same as above, but doesn't feel like a launch title)
  • Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce (has open maps and super mode transformations, but movesets are greatly reduced compared to other games; also gets a tremendous difficulty spike in the last section that detracted from the experience as a whole)
  • Warriors Orochi (port of the console versions, open maps, crossover between Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors characters in a new setting with original generation antagonists)
  • Warriors Orochi 2 (same as above but with a slight bit more content than the PS2 version)

Puzzle
  • All I can suggest here is Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords, though the PSP version has non-functional allies, not that they do much. It's a Match-3 RPG, so hope you really, really like gem swapping.
Strategy
  • Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness (enhanced port of the PS2 game that includes a new Etna Mode campaign and an abuseable glitch in Foresight/Tainted Staff items)
  • Disgaea 2: Dark Hero Days (enhanced port of the PS2 game that includes a new Axel Mode campaign and has paid DLC characters, but the western release has fewer DLCs than Japan's)
  • Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions (enhanced port of the PS1 release; get the slowdown patch and look at several of the hacks floating around)
  • Metal Gear Acid (turn-based strategy and collectible card game; it somehow works!)
  • Metal Gear Acid 2 (same as above; I felt that Acid had a better story but Acid 2 had better gameplay)
  • Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (has three branching storylines that converge with a high number of event variations based on who's alive and/or in your party, plus a postgame and an optional dungeon that's longer than some entire games; plays differently from the SNES/PS1 release and Reborn even though the latter was based on this version; has the One Vision mod that rebalances the game)

Shmups
I've only lightly played these, but these are three collections of Konami shmups.
  • Gradius Collection
  • Parodius Portable (Japan only)
  • Salamander Portable (Japan only)
Whew, wall over.

For Puzzle, you should try "Lumines" (I recommend psvita title, but while different it's also on psp).
It's puzzle + music.

If you like hack-'n-slash, Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity and Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD can keep you busy for a lifetime.
