So, i just scored a cecha00 (japanese full hardware) ps3 on ebay, and i wonder if anybody has any suggestions. Im not entirely sure i want to mod it, but im not entirely sure i dont.

it came with 3 games but i guess it only plays japanese ps3 games out of the box, but it will play any ps1 or ps2 game (not that i have any, anymore :P)

what say y'all...?

I'd recommend soft modding the system. The CECHA00 models are known for having a 90 nm RSX, which has given them a reputation for high failure rates compared to the Slim and Super Slim model PS3s.

Soft modding will allow your system to play games of any region, play backups of PS1, PS2, PS3, and some PSP games. The fan speed can also be altered if modded, which can help keep the RSX running for as long as possible. In the case of fat model PS3's, they can all be soft modded, and there is little benefit to keeping your system in its stock form if you plan to use it.

If you have not heard of the website consolemods.org, it is a fantastic resource that gives plenty of information regarding the system's architecture and modding capabilities. The site details how you can mod the system, which only requires a PC and a USB along with your PS3.

PreciateCHA!

also im really into super audio CD and the DSD format in general. I got a couple of SACDs but the prices are all over the place (mostly only japanese classical and jazz gets released in this format, unfortunately).

Does anybody know if a PS3 can be made to play DSD files?

Also, regarding the fan and cooling, would it be good to upgrade the fan somehow? Like maybe just replace with a noctua? What size fan does it take?

From the Online PS3 Manual, it appears that DSD files should be compatible with the system if they're on a compatible disc media, such as DVD-R discs. USB might work as well, but unfortunately I haven't tested DSD media myself. I'd probably just insert the discs you have to see if they're already compatible.

As for the fan, I haven't upgraded the fans personally, so I can't say if there would be a noticable difference there - that said, the size the fan takes is dependant on the model, and I've heard conflicting opinions on the benefits of changing the fan.

oh thanks for that info! Wow i wish i had known that back in the day.

My band used to record in that format, but i had no idea i could play them back on my ps3! I basically could just play them back on the recorder or i had to convert them to play on anything else. I had never even heard of an SACD.

whoever named it that must have inspired the person who named the Wii U

It certainly seems to be a niche feature; I was surprised to read that the format was compatible, as well. The PS3 was a true media machine for its time, especially the fat PS3 models. Some of its extra memory card slots were removed in later revisions, but I'd imagine that SACDs should be playable on all variants of the system.

Do let me know if the discs work on your end!

yeah im not sure but i thought it was just first gen ps3s. I just grabbed them today so ill let you know when they arrive. They should definitely work though.

what i wish is i could find another recorder. I dont see them anywhere anymore. its a great format for live recording or mastering. Tricky to process with a computer though because the sample rate is so high. I think thats one reason it never caught on (yet?).

although, i think one of the discs i got was produced in 2023 so i guess its still a thing... at least in japan

well, it came today and a few of the sacds came but i have to go pick them up.

it didnt come with analog cables anyway, so i ordered a scart cable...

in the meantime, i *think* i managed to get street fighter 4 stuck in the drive. any suggestions about that? I have the console sitting flat. It made the drive sound but the disc didnt come out. pressing eject again made beeps with no other effect. Eventually it sucked the disc back in...

so at the moment i have a 200 dollar street fighter 4 machine derp

heh at this rate i prolly should have just gotten a 50 dollar DSD converter and bought some tracks online... but this is more fun heh heh. Expensive fun.

(at least its not a01 expensive)

well.. so, i learned a valuable lesson which is: one prolly shouldnt use a ps3 to play sacds

i got a scart cable and hooked it up properly... and it played two sacds, and they sounded pretty sweet... and then im pretty sure i burned out the laser diode by doing so. Now it only reads them as regular CDs. Derp

i dont currently have any ps2 games to try and of course my DVDs are american.

but i guess i would highly recommed against using an old ps3 to play sacd. I found out that PS3 doesnt even output a DSD stream, (it converts to 24bit 176.4 kHz) but it still has to read the disc at a steady 2.8 mhz stream... derp

i should have saved that laser for playing games (which is much less strenuous, of course).

meh... anybody know where i can get a good replacement dvd laser for a ps3???

Oh, wow. That's... unfortunate, to say the least. One thing to note is that the fat PS3 models are generally ticking time-bombs as is, though I am surprised that the laser went out after two SACDs. On the bright side, I don't believe that the laser is not required to play digital titles; you can likely still soft-mod the system to play games.

You can also de-marry your blu ray drive if you softmod. You can probably find replacement drives for CECHA00 models on ebay and other second-hand markets.

It seems I missed your previous issues with the drive earlier, as well...

I wouldn't blame yourself over this kind of situation. The seventh generation of consoles in general have issues with their reliability, aside from the Wii.

yeah i did some research, it looks like there are 3 laser diodes. The middle one plays dvds, ps2 dvd titles and SACDs. since the sacd has to read continuously @ 2.8 Mhz while playing sacd, it burns out very quickly (compared to its more common uses)

Fortunately a new laser+lens setup is only about $15, so i will plolly do that.

all the while thinking to myself "a wii was 30 dollars at the thrift store" (im in over $300 on the ps3 by now)

do you recemmend a specific cfw? Ode?

I'd probably just go with the latest Evilnat CFW - that should be the most fully featured option. Rebug was an older CFW that some preferred, but Evilnat should have the same features nowadays.

ODEs shouldn't be necessary for the PS3, as you'd just use the on board storage on the system.

My understanding is that the ps3 can safely address 1 TB hdd. Is there any compelling reason to (or not to) use a ssd vs a decent hdd?

what about dual boot ofw/cfw? is that too much stress on the system memory?

the other thought i had was maybe replacing the power supply with a nice switching PS. I'm really concerned about the extra heat from the bad power we have here.

I measure 123 VRMS from the wall, and this model was designed for a region with 100 Vrms... thats 23 extra volts going purely to generate heat :P

plus we get lightening strikes and brown outs all the time here!

i think the bad power might have been the nail on the diodes coffin... i can handle that, but i dont ever want to reflow/ replace the gpu if i can help it!

I don't have experience using an ssd for the PS3 as I've had spare hdds that I just used instead, but from what I've heard from others, it may be worthwhile if you're looking for the PS3 to run quieter and be more power efficient. You'll just need to make sure the ssd you buy is compatible with the system. Speeds in general will improve somewhat, as well, albeit limited due to the system's older SATA 1 interface.

I also don't have experience with dual-booting on PS3 either, so I'll refrain from making any definitive comments about it. It's possible by the sounds of it, but I don't know the specifics.

Yes, a step-up/step-down converter is probably a good idea for Japanese electronics if you're not in that region.

well, i got a laser assembly, but now im not sure if it needs to be replaced (yet?). I put a dvd ps2 game in and it was recognized as such (but it was american ps2 game so i couldnt actually play it yet), so evidently the laser still works at least a little bit.

i'm thinking maybe the lens has shifted or is dirty so it just isnt catching the sacd layer. I know my og ps1 wouldnt work unless i turned it upside down (i actually tried that, but it didnt help here. Maybe there is an adjustment for the lens height.

Ive also read that sometimes the homebrew sacd ripping software will read a disc even when the official player fails. So im gonna try that soon.
