So, i just scored a cecha00 (japanese full hardware) ps3 on ebay, and i wonder if anybody has any suggestions. Im not entirely sure i want to mod it, but im not entirely sure i dont.

it came with 3 games but i guess it only plays japanese ps3 games out of the box, but it will play any ps1 or ps2 game (not that i have any, anymore :P)

what say y'all...?

I'd recommend soft modding the system. The CECHA00 models are known for having a 90 nm RSX, which has given them a reputation for high failure rates compared to the Slim and Super Slim model PS3s.

Soft modding will allow your system to play games of any region, play backups of PS1, PS2, PS3, and some PSP games. The fan speed can also be altered if modded, which can help keep the RSX running for as long as possible. In the case of fat model PS3's, they can all be soft modded, and there is little benefit to keeping your system in its stock form if you plan to use it.

If you have not heard of the website consolemods.org, it is a fantastic resource that gives plenty of information regarding the system's architecture and modding capabilities. The site details how you can mod the system, which only requires a PC and a USB along with your PS3.

PreciateCHA!

also im really into super audio CD and the DSD format in general. I got a couple of SACDs but the prices are all over the place (mostly only japanese classical and jazz gets released in this format, unfortunately).

Does anybody know if a PS3 can be made to play DSD files?

Also, regarding the fan and cooling, would it be good to upgrade the fan somehow? Like maybe just replace with a noctua? What size fan does it take?

From the Online PS3 Manual, it appears that DSD files should be compatible with the system if they're on a compatible disc media, such as DVD-R discs. USB might work as well, but unfortunately I haven't tested DSD media myself. I'd probably just insert the discs you have to see if they're already compatible.

As for the fan, I haven't upgraded the fans personally, so I can't say if there would be a noticable difference there - that said, the size the fan takes is dependant on the model, and I've heard conflicting opinions on the benefits of changing the fan.

oh thanks for that info! Wow i wish i had known that back in the day.

My band used to record in that format, but i had no idea i could play them back on my ps3! I basically could just play them back on the recorder or i had to convert them to play on anything else. I had never even heard of an SACD.

whoever named it that must have inspired the person who named the Wii U

It certainly seems to be a niche feature; I was surprised to read that the format was compatible, as well. The PS3 was a true media machine for its time, especially the fat PS3 models. Some of its extra memory card slots were removed in later revisions, but I'd imagine that SACDs should be playable on all variants of the system.

Do let me know if the discs work on your end!

yeah im not sure but i thought it was just first gen ps3s. I just grabbed them today so ill let you know when they arrive. They should definitely work though.

what i wish is i could find another recorder. I dont see them anywhere anymore. its a great format for live recording or mastering. Tricky to process with a computer though because the sample rate is so high. I think thats one reason it never caught on (yet?).

although, i think one of the discs i got was produced in 2023 so i guess its still a thing... at least in japan
