An updated version of the Nintendo 64 emulator Project64 has been made and released to the public by Edwin Bruce Shankle. Here it is!
He also says:
Have fun with a regression free version of Project64 with a guide on setting up texture packs, mass patching ROMhacks, and most importantly, knowing that the features actually work. 🙂

Cool.

And honestly I'm surprised Danny err i mean @Heinzu didn't make this thread

do translation patches not crash in this version?

that's a genuine problem ive been having. fan translated japanese roms crash on boot for me
As far as I know, he has said it's been specifically geared toward being compatible with hacks and hasn't come across any problems. If anything comes up, do us all a favor and let him know, he'll probably release an update 😅

Maybe you need to add the entries manually to the RDB?
sorry i have no idea what you are talking about, could you explain please?

sure ill download the new version at some point in the near future and try it then

Ah, no problem. Basically the emulator has a file that is a database of the games it supports and the settings it should use. It's no uncommon that hacks require you to edit that file manually for the game to be visible on the ROM load dialogue and perform correctly.

Let me show you an example:

[4F1E88F7-4A5A3F96-C:4A]
Good Name=Wonder Project J2 [T]
Status=Compatible
32bit=Yes
Counter Factor=1
RDRAM Size=4

This is the entry in my RDB for Wonder Project J2, the fan translated version.

Edit: I don't see the point of using this. I can't even map my controller without it crashing. I have PJ 64 Dev version 4.0 and will continue to use that.

*boots up Harvest Moon 64*
*still sees the roof of the dog house and the dog bowl flicker in and out of existence*
*shuts off the game*

There is a workaround, but I couldn't tell ya if it works for Harvest Moon.

As much as I like the efforts poured onto Project64, I stopped using it after the annoying pop up that halts you from using the emulator. Since then, I've moved onto other emulators such as Simple64 and then Gopher64. Sometimes, even Bizhawk since that has support for N64 Emulation. I almost think that would be the best tool besides Gopher64 and Rosalina Mupen64 to utilize.

Paying for emulators
I can understand the efforts of making these emulators is extremely difficult, especially with the more complex the hardware can be. bit at the same time, even if it were for keeping things out of harm's way, I wouldn't allow myself to make money out of making these emulators. I could've sworn that's partially some of the reasons why one of the Switch emulators (already forgotten their names) had gotten taken down but I could easily be wrong with that's ince it has been a whole since they've been taken down

It should be about donations.

Many Emulators are requiring a Bios file to work to make it 100% safe legal wise too.

As I recall there was a build behind donations or paywall that could run unreleased game (namely TotK and/or EoW when they were leaked). This is the stupidest thing to advertise when emulators are officially meant to run games people have dumped themselves or to play homebrew, piracy is only a byproduct of a legal program (like a kitchen knife, you shouldn't say that it's perfect for stabbing people, here it's the same, it's just for the kitchen for vegetables, fruits, fish and meat).

I love how it's from the Nintendo fans that they ever thought of making a build of one of the Switch emulators that allowed for the emulator to play leaked newly released games. but this is what I was referring to. also the mention of requiring files from the software itself for the emulator to work does immediately allow donations for the emulator to be used since you wouldn't have to worry about anything illegal.

Add Ares to that list
