I blame the US localisation making people confused about Maron's existence.
They probably figured some kids wouldn't know at the time what an android or cyborg was, and they thought "Robot" would get the point across.

some of my research shows that might not be the case. it is due to the localization, but it seems like there was more detail or context in the japanese version that was missed, seemingly due to how they write in their language, and that bit was missed by the translators. they are mostly referred to as "artificial humans" in japan, and from my understanding, a very slight change in pronunciation can completely change one word into another. i wouldn't be surprised if something similar exists in their written words as well.

Fair point, but whatever the case may be, they are Androids here and always will be, due to whatever reason led to them being called as such.
They've been called that for so long that it would be hard to get the fans to accept them being called anything else besides Android 16, 17, and 18.

I would rather wish they had used Lazuli or Jū Hachi Gō myself, but eh.

Thanks, "Artificial" explains the inconsistencies better, since some are robots, other are cyborgs, and others are just biologically engineered beings.

yeah, it's pretty late to call them by other names. i have been trying to call 18 lazuli the couple of times that i have uploaded a drawing of her.
it is kind of Toriyama's fault though, since he could have pointed that out far sooner. he hid their names in a episode of the show, visible for about 3 seconds. and years later during a convention or something like that, someone asked a question about 17 and 18 and he just looked confused like "did you watch the show? i gave you their names."

yeah, that seems to be the start point of the confusion; and i would also probably add in that android 19 is a robot, and dr gero looks pretty mechanical barring the brain case; so the translators probably thought that the other characters were robots or androids as well. cell is also referred to as an android too.

From the show, almost verbatim....

Seriously, they write themselves anymore, and you know the translators did that on purpose. They knew what they were doing. The context, though, is she's going to sacrifice herself for the others, but she's like Darkness from Konosuba and is a masochist
