This literally came out of nowhere.
https://www.romhacking.net/translations/7599/
Complete English translation of Langrisser V: The End of Legend for the PlayStation by nE0sIghT, as released on the Langrisser IV & V: Final Edition compilation (Langrisser V disc, serial SLPS-01819).

All story and menu text is translated: the story across every scenario, the intro quiz and tutorial battle, menus and the config screen, item/class/spell/character names, optional maps, and the in-game recap screens.

Distributed as a PPF patch applied to the verified original disc image (patch the .bin; the .cue is unchanged). The patch is built reproducibly with an open-source toolkit (GPL v3).

Special thanks to CyberWarriorX for the Langrisser III toolkit and borgor for the English translation guide

Sweet! We finally have complete translations (sorta) for the whole Langrisser series.

Edit: It is kind of crazy how hacks build upon each other. Thanks to the work of the Langrisser 3 hacker, we have the know-how to translate V.
Post automatically merged:

Maybe we should ping @RageBurner so we can get this on the repo.

Something is amiss here.
PPF-O-Matic v3 throws an "integer overflow" error after waiting several minutes.
rompatcher.js throws an "invalid PPF version".

The expected input image also looks weird, maybe some obscure image was used to create the ppf patch ?
Neither Redump or the one found in MAME software lists has the expected size or checksums.

[edit]
I compiled applyppf3 sources in MSYS2 and that seems to do the trick.

Can you confirm that the game is playable? it did come out of nowhere and there are no posts in the ROMHacking forum about this project. It is kind of suspicious.

Ok after some digging, I did find a github project for this translation coming from the same nEOsighT alias as the one in the ROMHacking.net account. It seems to be legit.

Edit: The download link takes you to the github project, lol.
Should've tried that first.

@RageBurner should be able to update the repo whenever he gets a chance.

Here's the "applyppf" patched bin/cue.
I attached the tool in my post just above, should anyone need it.
I ran ECC/EDC error correction on track 1 with STARWIN+Neill Corletts command line tool.

I used the Redump image for this, I have no clue what source image he used.
These hashes and size do not match redumps (when binmerged):
iso/SLPS-01818-9-B.bin
  • Size: 696248448 bytes
  • CRC32: 5d13a8df
  • MD5: 7a9e431453fde9301188841f215bff98
  • SHA-1: e096604f2d4d69b48eb3c1b20ca5ea26e1ea8766
  • SHA-256: af3f5e1d6912f31f712d43cf71d954481fa9814021e62b41fdd8fce0c9429247

Well, if it gets added to the repo that's just my signal to start with the series.
let's begin the rookie GIF by ABC Network

I think he was using it for a Single BIN image. Redump uses Multi-BIN images.

I know, but even when I use binmerge or chdman to combine it, it still doesn't match those hashes he listed or size.
Any way, the game boots and is playable.

Does anyone know how to get Duckstation to automatically apply translation patches? I can't get it to work. Or maybe the .ppf patch file is busted?

If I can't figure that out, I guess I'll try patching manually but if duckstation can do it for me I'd rather not.

I already posted a working pre-patched disc here:

Idk about DuckStation and on-the-fly ppf patching, but as I said, PPF-O-Matic fails to apply this patch.
Only the command line tool "applyppf" could do it.
I know on-the-fly ips patching is a thing but I've never heard of on-the-fly ppf patching.

If I'm not mistaken, the infobox in PPF-o-matic claims the patch is PPF v1 format (an obsolete file-type no longer supported by modern utilities).

I got it to work automatically with Duckstation.

Step 1: Make sure the patch file has the exact name as the .cue file.

Step 2: Make sure this box is checked in the console settings:

DuckStationSettingsPPF.png

Step 3: Load the game and the patch should be automatically applied.

Looks like the patch is legit so far:

ah whoops, that would've saved me a few minutes figuring out this duckstation feature.

I still want to find a Japanese Disc image as well, because we don't have it, and it would be annoying to update the game going forward if we do not.

Edit: Actually we do. It's listed under "Compilations", but since the patch was made with outdated PPF encoding formats I've no way of testing the patch against the image we do have. Will still add a good known dump to the post just in case.

@RageBurner Here's the japanese Redump image, it's split bins.
If you don't like that, you can use binmerge to create a single bin/cue image.
Thanks, but I'm already upping it! also, binmerge fails for me, only cdfix seems to merge tracks properly for me.

Ho-lee-sheet, this news really came outta nowhere!
Guess by now almost everything by Career Soft had been translated huh? The only ones left would be Growlanser I PSP (the PSX remake of I) and Growlanser IV Return (the VN sequel of IV).
