I suppose that in a way it's a method of discovering/showing people new games.

Yep. It's pretty cool. Might be the first racing game that allowed you to tune your car. The very early 3D graphics during races can make your eyes bleed though. If you're going to get it I suggest the Amiga version since the DOS original only sports 16 colors and PC speaker noises.
