Pick 5 "Desert Island Games"!

Nay, I’m not tolerating this cultural stander. The three kingdoms era is one of the most important and interesting historical periods ever studied. There’s a reason it’s constantly celebrated. I know you meant no disrespect to China, but this reductive remark I won’t let slide. Sorry.
That's fair enough, but it doesn't mean I have to like the period as a game setting. Plus I am referring to the overall hyper fantastical take on what is essentially history. I don't like Sengoku Basara much either for the same reason.

I'll grant that I expressed myself poorly, though.

Which is completely fair 👍, was clarifying just in case

1. Skyrim
2. Baldur's Gate 3
3. Yakuza 0
4. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
5. Mortal Kombat X

A combination of long games that I could play over and over, and games meant for basically "infinite" play (aka a racing game and a fighting game).

1. Borderlands - The original. There's something about the first game that just works for me, there's almost no fluff, it doesn't feel bloated, it's great for replayability. It'd be nice if there was more to the endgame than Crawmerax but it is what it is. I enjoyed it back in the day on 360, but playing on PC or a modern console at 60 frames with fast load times greatly enhances the experience.

2. Persona 4 Golden - It's my all-time favorite game. I've been through it 3 times to get the platinum trophy on Vita, but I could keep playing it again and again. The music is top-notch, the murder mystery is a good backdrop for the story, and I can relate to the characters and their struggles in a small town.

3. Star Ocean The Second Story R - A perfect remake of one of my favorites. There are enough variables and things to do to keep it fresh for different playthroughs.

4. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - I don't play this game often, but since there will be friends on the deserted island, I think this would keep us busy for a long time. Plus it has a map maker, that would be a good time sink for me.

5. Stardew Valley - Another game you could sink thousands of hours into either solo or with friends.

I only need one:

Though if I wanted to spice things up, I’d probably pick this one too:
IMG_4650.jpeg

(Sorry if the pics are huge, I can’t scale them as well on my phone)

Fire emblem 8 self randomizing romhack
gta III
tetris ds
Castlevania Aria of Sorrow
Persona 4 golden

reasons: the games i replayed the most and never get bored of them + persona 4 golden to keep some social sanity

honorable metions
mhgu
Doom 1
Terraria and Minecraft
Fire emblem 11
Tetris for the wonderswan
puyo puyo tetris
tony hawk pro skater 2
shin megami tensei iv

most of them would be nice too but get outshined for different reasons like for example multiplayer is a big factor why i love mh,terraria and minecraft
or between the versions of tetris i pick the one that combines modes + aesthetics the better for me
smt iv could replace persona 4 but it will probably make me insane and existencialist as fuck

When making my original list and rules I had never even considered how self-moddable a game was or the existence of romhacks so I've loved seeing those mentioned!

Honestly love this bit about P4G. I like to imagine an alternate version of Castaway where Tom Hanks' character becomes obsessed with a fictional girl from a video game instead of a volleyball. The idea of having a game to stimulate some sense of community is absolutely brilliant though, that would do wonders for your state of mind when stranded!

yeah that is the idea sjjsjssj also i should mention that for aria of sorrow there is also a randomizer hack but it works more like a rouge like. pretty fun too but i will abstend my self from rouge likes if i am in a deserted island. i actually think i get a little bit stressed in them even if their one of my fav genres

Oh jeeze. Oh heck. Oh gosh. This is super duper hard. It'd be easy to just throw 5 of my favorite games out there, but I'm trying to think of games that'd last a good amount of time. As much as I adore Silent Hill, for example, I've done everything in the game and beaten it more than a reasonable amount of times. I'm still happy to go back to it to show friends or something, but I don't really play it that often anymore. That said, let's get down to business.

This one is actually a really easy pick. It'd satisfy my need for a racing game and if I had hypothetical friends, we'd have tons of fun on our sand couch playing it against one another. Possibly ruining friendships. Playing the story missions on harder difficulties is legendarily difficult and unlocking everything is quite an undertaking. I'd have to master the fuck out of the game or die trying. Probably the latter due to an aneurysm or heart attack or something.

Okay, I couldn't not have this game. It's my favorite game of all time. There's plenty of self imposed challenges that could happen but more importantly since hacks are allowed, that adds a whole new rabbit hole to go down. If I could only have one hack it'd be Cerabow's Mod, if I could have multiple I would be set for a LONG time.

Enter_the_Gungeon_logo.png
Much like F-Zero GX, there is a lot in this game. If I went for unlocking all the guns, making all the synergies, unlocking all the characters, seeing everyone's true ending, defeating all the enemies and going after all the NPCs and secret rooms and stuff I'd be playing for a really long time. Also like F-Zero GX I'd have to get really good to master the game completely. It'd be even better with hypothetical friends, since it's co-op. Oh, we can't forget mods! There are many unofficial expansions and other stuff that one could staple to the game for even more longevity.

The Hitman World of Assassination trilogy would be up next. So much stuff to unlock, so many challenges and there's a way to unlock all the past online missions for offline play!

This was a hard as hell decision. I was paralyzed with indecision, it was either FTL or Baldur's Gate 3. Ultimately, well, it's obvious what I chose! I haven't played through all of BG3 so I decided against it in the end. FTL is just wonderful. The base game has a ton of stuff to do and it gets even better with mods. I'd probably go with Multiverse if I could only choose one mod, but if I could get multiple it's another game that would take a long time to get sick of with all the new content.

You have no idea how long I spent mulling over this. x) I looked through my game library, then all my Steam/GoG/Epic games and finally started whittling the list down one by one. But now I'm done! I'm finally free! (I kid, I had a fun time thinking about this.)

That's a really great list and a nice elaboration, Enter The Gungeon is my favorite roguelike ever!

Really cool stuff man ::dkapproves

I'm gonna limit myself to the DS/3DS, since it doesn't make a lot of sense to bring a console to a deserted island. Feels like you'd want everything to be on-the-go.
  • Tetris DS: Local multiplayer, endless replay value
  • Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate: Local co-op, heaps of content
  • Pokémon SacredGold/StormSilver: Local trading/battling, heaps of content
  • Etrian Odyssey III: Highly replayable, perfect "before bed" game (to me)
  • Jump Ultimate Stars: Local versus play, heaps of content

Rage praising a musou? Are you sure you’re the same rage I know and love? If so, good. As a helplessly unapologetic musou nutjob, I’m happy.

Oh yeah, why complete over AIR? I’m curious
I didn't realize you were shortening his name, and I thought you were saying that somebody was "ragepraising" like angrily complimenting something hahaha. The term rage praise will be hard to apply, but I'm going to find the opportunity.

I'm very fortunate that I only had to agonize over 1 of my inclusions, though your comment about FFT being your favorite definitely makes me wonder if I truly do want FFXII over FFX... Sure FFXII has more content and I don't know it quite as well, but do I really want to ensure I'll never play my favorite game again?

Perhaps you're onto something and I need to rethink that choice...

If multiplayer in EtG were more fleshed out, it would be among my top 10, too.
I think it's one of those games where multiplayer doesn't matter much, it's already really fun playing solo!

But yeah maybe it could've been better for some people, but I love it already so I don't mind ::dkapproves

Not in order but....
  • Donkey Kong Country 2 - The gameplay is just a perfect mix of getting an awesome flow going and navigating tricky passages. It's always a joy to try to optimize runs on these levels. Then it's just aesthetically great too. Killer music and visuals.
  • Final Fantasy VII - This is a mix of being a nostalgic world I can just sink into, and because the art direction and music are eternally compelling to me even after the novelty of the great storytelling has worn.
  • Alpha Centauri - I had to think of games that one could play forever without having to worry about getting sick of the story after the 1000th playthrough or memorizing linear levels, so I debated what strategy game I would pick for this. It was between this and Civ IV. Alpha wins out because the atmosphere and theme. It looks a little crusty these days, but the overall package checks off most of my boxes. I love the clashing and heavy philosophies of all the factions, the sci-fi setting... all that good junk.
  • Fallout 2 - It was a toss-up between this and New Vegas. I just love creating characters and I'm a sucker for this period of pre-rendered environments. Obviously the writing is great and there are tons of ways to role-play your character with different dialogue paths.
  • Elder Scrolls: Morrowind - all of these games are great, but this one is just the right mix of accessible and obtuse with the strangest setting of the series. Also this game would keep me busy for many hours on a desert island just grinding and being lost lol.

Rage-praising = 👍

Aww, thank you. 💜 And you have great taste, EtG is such a wonderful game. I'm not sure what my favorite roguelike would be. Obviously EtG and FTL are up there, but Vampire Survivors, Darkest Dungeon, World of Horror and Slay the Spire were also serious considerations. Crap, now I'm having second thoughts about FTL. x) I would say Vampire Survivors is probably my favorite, but it's quick to master and that's what made me bump it off the list. Maybe I'll feel differently when they finish updating it?

Oh no, what have I done?! That is a really tough choice. Could you really go the rest of your life without hearing "Stay away from the summoner!" ever again? Then again, at least half your life would be spent fighting Yiazmat, 'eyyyyy! Seriously though, what version of FFXII would it be? I feel all three versions have their upsides and downsides.

Great choices there, I think these easy to master games are much enjoyable for beginners. But yeah definitely too easy

Slay the Spire though? Ooh nice one ::dkapproves

Definitely Zodiac Age! It added so much content on an already massive game whilst really refining the job system into something I enjoy a lot more. I adore OG FFXII, but unlike FFX where the visual updates aren't enrirely to my liking (they removed facial expressions!!) I do find Zodiac Age to be a fairly definitive version.

Plus it is one of the prettiest games I've ever seen. FFXII was always a technical marvel on PS2, but seeing it blown up to 1080p with some new visual effects on magic and such really cements its place in the pantheon of visuals for me.
