Phantasy Star Thread

Does the "Sega Ages 2500 Series Volume 32: Phantasy Star Complete Collection" for the PS2 have a good version of the first game for a first time player? Asking for a friend.

Your talking about the ps2 collection one right?
If i remember right, prior to the switch version it was considered the best way to play the earlier games legitimately due to some QOL changes if i remember right so it should be fine, that said there's also the remake if that interests them.

Story wise saint million is the actual boss of the desert area, with kondrieru being the rare variant.
Shambertin is a event boss that you could fight and spam essentially at any time through taking it's mission, it had different drops than saint million (almost always better) and was a harder fight than saint million, kondrieru had better drops and was stronger than both though.
Kondrieru, the rare variant, could show up instead of either saint million or even shambertin in it's event quest, making shambertin's quest (since desert treks could legitimately take a couple hours even with a good party on higher difficulties, while a shambertin run could be done in 30 minutes) the best method for farming kondrieru, which had a 1/5 chance of spawning if i remember right.

EDIT: looked it up, that IS shambertin's music, this is saint million's music:
I need to rewatch that one lore video but the biggest issue is how most of Ep IV is locked behind Japanese exclusive content thanks to Sega not porting the full stuff in the western side of Blue Burst...

At least I know that Rupika is the central character of the episode (like Rico in the first and Elly in the second) and that she turned into that because of the D-factor of what was a part of Dark Falz laid in the desert.

Not a big fan of that other theme though.

Too bad that the "2500 Series" was cheap as hell and that most "remakes" were mediocre...

I also think that the art style of Generations 1 and 2 were eh... They could've put the art style of PSO or even PSU to make it look nice but the original series was meant to look 80's/early 90's.

I love some of the artworks of this game

Just played for the first time PSO on my og Xbox.

I had only previously played PSO2 and New Genesis before.

I had to say, even if the camera control is a pain, I like the more methodical and slow gameplay rather than the flashi, "always on movement" and more action focus (imho) that the newer PSO games has.

i tried playing it for the first time on the ephinea servers back in fall. i really enjoyed the slow methodical combat and the over all vide of the game. thought about joining their discord to play with others on their community, but so far from what i played it can be solo'd too.

For the camera don't hesitate spamming the L button (or R if you've reversed the camera/alternative palette button).

You also need to do menuing (especially the quick menu with R+Y on the Xbox pad) to not get slowed down by enemies as the character gets into a fighting stance near them.

I had a lot of connections issues with Schthack for some reason. Idk what can be causing this, so I have been playing solo too.

It is really fun even solo. It reminds me of the game loop of diablo 2 in a way.

I have certainly do lol. I also change the map so it reflects the camera position so I can plan better my movements (Im a ranger). And I think I get the hand of it.

Once you get the feel of the camera is not that hard, but I would have love from Sega to just use the second stick... but I guess Sega will alway be Sega

The Dreamcast lacked that second stick sadly (and I think each subsequent ports couldn't include it outside of menus because of the way the engine handles the camera).

I think Ephinea allows you to use buttons for the camera (I have bound it to the right stick) but it's only for left and right, only PSU started with the full X and Y axis.

For what it's worth, leaving the room in a dungeon will cause the enemies to reset their positions, this can be used to cheese enemies, normally i don't suggest this but if your soloing seabed ultimate, yeah your gonna need to do that.

I remember reading it as the "room sniping" method.

While it can cheese enemies in normal mode I think that in harder difficulties it helps a lot.

Some quests even forces you in a room just so you have to defeat enemies with 0 cover.

I first played the series with the Switch version of the first game. First person dungeon crawling was a amazing aspect for me. Never knew 8 bit games ever did that.
I wish I experienced Online 1 as a kid with my gamecube.

It's sad how this version never got a PC nor Xbox/PS port...

There were other 8-bits exemples but not done as well nor as smooth as this game.

Agreed. I can only assume it didn't sell that well or since Sega is slowly doing remakes of their old games they might be working on a new remake of PS to release on everything. That's a big maybe for me.

I think that quest was trying to make fun of players that frequently buy weapons because they're slightly better.
I also like how PSO has some funny quests next to soul-crunshingly sad ones.

I need to redo them someday

PSO's story is effectively a tragedy, anyone who was on pioneer 1 is either dead...or worse, so anyone with family or loved ones on pioneer 1 are gonna have a bad time.

And here's another free cam video (this time in Episode 2)
