Phantasy Star Thread

I just start playing phantasy star universe yesterday, my first phantasy star. What are your thoughts with this game? (No spoilers please).
PSU is fun, I kinda like its characters, the story is serviceable. AOTI improved a lot of things, but it is Episode 2, so you need to play PSU first (you can import your PSU save to PSU AOTI). Too bad Episode 3 was online only, when things started to get really interesting... But yeah, unlike everyone here, I don't hate PSU. It's fun. When I first played it, I wasn't expecting a new PSO or something like this, the same way I wasn't expecting PS V when I first played PSO1. So, enjoy! And may it be the first step in a very fun journey!

I played PSO but never beat it. I remember it taking a ludicrous amount of time to get to another level, but I don't remember why

I won't spoil it then.

Universe grew on me.

I still prefer the Portable games.

In PSO levelling isn't enough to get more powerful.

You need to feed your mag in the right way and have the most optimised Units to have highly enough stats to get the better weapons (I know that Ranger and Force are harder because you need enough ATA and MST).

Hmm I don't know this RPG. How is it ?
This is a Roleplaying game franchise created by Sega in the late 80's.

Unlike most other series back then it's set in a futuristic world far away from fantasy (well, the first still had dragons, slimes and skeletons but that was the first instalment).

While it's not perfect the games had a more serious story than the usual and managed to have memorable characters.

Ok, that's sounds interesting.

Played base PSO2 on Tweaker before an official translated version came out. Did all of the urgent quests on the highest difficulty and did all of the story content before NGS. Eventually quit NGS but might come back to it sooner or later.

As for PSU I am glad that something like Clementine is available for it and still gets updates so people can play it together online.

Well, not a problem, you can import your PSPo2 (USA) character file to PSo2I (JPN) easily, just changing the save game folder name:

  1. On your chosen system, locate the ULUS10529 (US) or ULEU10529 (EU) folder in your SAVEDATA folder.
  2. Rename the above folder to NPJH50043. You may wish to create a backup of the ULUS or ULES folder before doing this.
  3. Load up the game and choose Import from the main menu and then Import Original Game Save Data and follow the steps.

Thanks for the tip.

On the other hand there's 0 way to get the Exam saber from having a Portable 1 character imported to Portable 2 in the game?

I still wish they made a PC/console port for Portable 2 because I like its gameplay the best which is a blend between PSO and PSU's.

I always felt like PSU had a bit of a Photon Art spam from having photon recharges and if you play with a Ranger or Force you basically are penalised as your weapons are dependant on Photon Points whereas Hunters can still fight nicely with a depleted weapon but that's just me.

It is one of my favorite games, but it does get repetitive. if you're able make sure to do the Part 2, Ambition of the Illuminus. it ties a nice bow on the story and you create a character to use in it. i put thousands of hours into that game online in the 360 days and is still one of my favorites today. i did a replay of the ps2 version last year and it brought back a lot of good memories

Just did a complete run through 4 again. It was all downhill from there. Time to do a shot and start running through 3 again in my spare time. Genesis Does.

I love the atmosphere of PSO1. I played a lot of episode 1 & 2 on the Gamecube and a little of episode 3. Still get on private servers from time to time on either the Gamecube version or the Blue Burst servers depending on how I'm feeling. Also got into PSO2 for a while after it released on Steam. Dropped it completely once New Genesis came out though.

As for the 8/16 bit ones, I only ever beat II and IV. I have I and III on my backlog to play eventually though.

Somehow the Dreamcast had the best atmosphere of all versions. GC and Blue Burst are still cool tho.

I should try NGS again but I fear I missed too much of Online 2 to appreciate its story...

I need to do II soon.

As for I you can try either the Switch portt or SMS Power's romhack.

I did a playthrough of PS1 recently on switch using the Sega Ages version and just having a map in the dungeons and your health visible at all times made a huge difference in that game and it regularly goes on sale. I picked it up for 2.99$

You wont miss anything from not playing PSO2 if you play NGS. theyre only slightly connected in that you use the same character for both. NGS is an entirely different game from PSO2 in terms of gameplay and style. It's more fast paced action and open world exploration as opposed to the PSO standard. I personally love it and have been playing since launch but its definitely not everyone's cup of tea. and tbh.... They've been draggin real ass in the story and only recently updated it after a year. if you're new to it tho theres tons to do.

I've played the Dreamcast version very little. I should go back and playthrough it a bit to see the differences.

You can still play the original PSO2 through NGS. There's not as many playing it still, but all the content is still there to my understanding!

I have the Switch port. Been meaning to play it, it's on my backlog. Also curious about the PS2 Sega Ages version, as I saw both it and the Sega Ages version of II recently got an english translation.

I recently started playing through the Switch port of the first game. Definitely a product of its time, but I think it really holds its own against the first Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest games.

After I finish it, I might play more of the series. IV is the only other game I've played, although I've heard good things about II, PSO, and I think one of the DS games.

I just found out Phantasy Star 4 cost like a hundred bucks on release. Imagine this guys. Any of you owned it or bought it new back then?

Imagine being the kid whose parents bought it back then in school the bragging rights...

I was born in 1984 and came to California in like 93 or so when I was 9 and got deported like seven years ago back to Poland. but I dont dont remember a game costing 100 bucks. I only got into console gaming and not just arcades tho around 96. I do remember getting doom 64 for like 70 bucks.

I think Duke Nukem Forever cost $100 on release, but most games were always hovering around the $50 mark even back then -- hell, I think Earthbound cost just as much upon release.

Weird, but certainly not unheard-of.

Final Fantasy VI cost me 79.99 and Chrono Trigger cost 89.99 from Toys R Us in 1995. The only way I convinced my parents to get me those is by getting good grades and staying out of trouble, lol. But with those prices I was only getting one game a year. I had to make due with borrowing games from friends and rentals.

It looks like Final Fantasy VI was even more expensive at launch! (99.99):

Holy cow, talk about individual pricing! I now understand why blockbuster was such a huge thing. You're paying an arm & a leg for this stuff, you better god darn know what you're getting.
Like, I'd really like to know the reasoning on 90$ for NBA Jam, Acclaim trying to swindle you with that one.
