I swear it must be a meme at this point , everytime square tries to tackle a genre that's not RPG they end up shoving RPG elements

Well at least no one mentions The 3rd Birthday it seems. But to be serious, I've yet to play that one and see how good/bad it is

It was ok. Had weird new mechanics/systems and it was for the psp. had some nods to the og's but don't remember too much. only that she took damage and got more exposed haha.

The game is the spinoff to the book, and the movie is adapted from the book. But basically, rather than a normal licensed game, it looks like it was Square that reached out to the book's owners to license it, probably because they liked the mithocondria idea. If they had wanted to really adapt the novel into a videogame from the start, it would've been completely different, since they have little in common apart from that concept and the title.
