The file size is due to the music files on mp3. The actual game is 8MB. To play this on retroarch you have to use the core included, a modified genesis plus core, else the game will play a fake low res "mockup". So go to your retroarch cores folder, backup and delete your genesis_plus_gx_libretro.dll and replace it with the one included with the game. After that just load content and find the game .bin.

Download from Repo

...Game's rom was just modified to use music in a format mp3. So when a game needs a specific music it does not communicate with extra decompressing and processing components. It just plays specific mp3 files.
Ideally it needs to use a much more efficient format. I tried custom built versions of the core on a few lower end hardware devices and the ROM plays as expected but adding the tracks either prevents it from running at all or crashes when the first track should start to play. Having a ton of MP3 files load to RAM up front is just too much in these scenarios. I've re-encoded to a pathetic quality and gotten the entire soundtrack as small as 70MB but it's still too much for some popular platforms.
Ideally, tracks would be loaded to RAM as-needed but I get how that isn't likely possible so IMO a far leaner audio format is needed to make this accessible on more devices.

I honestly see no reason why this cannot run on a regular Mega Drive.

It runs on a regular MD/Gen.

Also you need to get to the final boss to play entire campaign. This requires to play through all paths in original mode. And this unlocks those paths in arcade mode as well.
You also have to throne characters, do jobs in the game, unlock characters.
Arcade mode has only one path initially.

i mean this game likely from sega CD you see sega cd logo at first intro, it is possible recreated and making the game to MD plus somehow, but the serious issue is anti piracy measure is in the game and wont go away unless someone to crack real hard and even doesn't playable in clone hardware and even sega mega drive hardware..

that mini game you see like a troll game PAAAAA it is anti piracy measure preventing/refusing to play real game and this somehow got cracked a bit right now not a whole game in custom emulator.

Sega CD logo is there because the game uses Sega CD's motorola chip when this addon is connected to console. It is for a control of second character by CPU. That is why this option shows up. And you can see it in retroarch because the core also emulates it but it requires sega cd bios. Remove the bios and a logo with an option won't be there anymore. Just like on OG hardware. It also detects 32x addon but it only replaces some objects with 32x logo as a bonus. But 32x is not emulated by the core.
The mini game is not an antipiracy measure. It also launches on OG hardware initially. Game's rom was just modified to use music in a format mp3. So when a game needs a specific music it does not communicate with extra decompressing and processing components. It just plays specific mp3 files.

tell that to the dev while the game also missing graphics like sexy sax man doesn't appear and also save feature bugged.

also the music in this game repeating and doesn't correct.. seems like emulator i guess.

Because it is still experimental, it is certain that there will be many bugs and what is certain is that in the next month or two, this game will be able to run successfully without any more problems in every system.
Yes. I saw a MacOS version of the core as part of one of the many IA download packs. Don't have a Mac so I haven't tried it myself though.

You need to also duplicate the GenPlusGX info file too and rename the copy to match the new core name you used. The info files tell Retroarch what ROMs the core can load, among many other things.

Working on a port of the core for Evercade and the same thing happens. The core apparently preloads ALL of the soundtrack into RAM right after the ROM boots up. In my case I can't get the soundtrack small enough to fit in available RAM but for your android Device you may be able to get away with re-encoding the MP3 files to a much lower bitrate like 64kbps just to see if you can run it with audio at all.

I foolishly left "run ahead" on, which likely combined with that music preload step to create a nasty bit of lag. It's working perfectly now, but I appreciate the help!

I put the windows file in the core of my Retroarch but everytime I try loading it up through the genesis plus GX core it always defaults to the shitty Pico-8 style version. Is this a problem with the files or am I just doing something wrong?

EDIT: simply deleted the old genesis plus gx core file and gave it's name to the paprium dll and it worked!:D Suck my cock Fonsi you rat bastard!!!!
This worked for me as well, thank you.
Thanks for the cores. Played through level 1 and it seems pretty mid.

This is misterbuh. Signing out.
I honestly agree, I played through the entire campaign on easy (I will up the difficulty another day) while a decent game it's honestly not worth the headache, I much prefer Streets of Rage tbh, I honestly see no reason why this cannot run on a regular Mega Drive.

Anyway, I hope somebody makes a patch/port of this to the Sega CD or 32X to mitigate the trouble or perhaps create a standalone emulator of some sort similar to Sonic rsdk ports and then share the source code so people could just port it to different systems like PC, Mac, Android, iOS, PS Vita or Nintendo Switch alongside the Rom as a standalone native port.

Here's the core for Linux x64. Built from the current latest version (commit a0b5a03 on 2025-07-07).
It's also renamed with its own core info file so you don't need to overwrite anything.
Is it possible for you to build the core for Linux arm64 also? I tried with docker and buildx but it does not work as expected. tysm!

Nevermind i managed to build the core for linux/arm64 myself. I'm testing it on an anbernic device so far it runs well

I wonder if there could be a work around using real genesis and Mega SD cart. Since the music is compressed some how, maybe have this game converted to a MD Plus game for the Mega SD.

It was said that this game can be run on BizHawk, but I can't get it to work on there even with the custom Genesis Plus core. Does anyone here know what to do with this?

you probably have retroarch set to restrict content to known working extensions and haven't added an "info file" for the new core listing what extensions it works with. Goto retroarch/info and find the genesis plus gx info file, make a copy of it and rename it to the exact same name as the core you added. then edit the info file in any text editor and change the core's name to reflect that it is for Paprium so inside of retroarch you can tell the difference between the original and modded core.
I figured out to copy the name, thanks for the detailed info though dude.

So I'm super new to RetroArch & I can't get past the dumb mini-game easter egg, mainly because I can't even select the correct core. RetroArch keeps having me choose from a "Suggest Cores" list prior to booting it & the patched core doesn't show up as an option. Anyone charitable enough to show me the error of my ways please?

Nevermind, I saw someone have the same issue & used their tip, we’re Gucci now!
maybe rename it as genesis_plus_gx_libretro.dll and use Genesis GX Plus core.
IDK if that was the proposed solution that worked?

Anyone experiencing severe lag when inputting any controls? Keyboard or gamepad, same lag. Latest nightly RA with the provided x64 core

Yes I hope so too. And chd. With the audio sizes this should have been a sega cd or Saturn or PS1 some shit. Cause it's unfair to be like check out my 2GB sega genesis game guys.

The rom is only 8MB large (allegedly with all decompressed data should make it 10MB large or 80Mb large as advertised) and music is allegedly compressed in it but components for its decompression and processing are not emulated yet. Thus the rom was hacked to use mp3 files with music recorded from the boombox mode. But without versions with crisis and saxophone effects. That is why they are absent. And modified core of Genesis Plus GX created for it to work.

Out of interest: why is a custom core needed for that game? Is this just because of the file size from the Soudtrack that is included?
The custom chips in the cart handled the "cd quality audio" and DRM. The custom core at the very least loads in and handles the audio files, if not also getting around the DRM (not sure if the DRM was removed and the mod is only audio related).

Thanks a lot! Will keep an eye open for that Mac Port of the Core. I think it would be a dream if this could be played "regularly" with the normal core provided by RetroArch.
