The file size is due to the music files on mp3. The actual game is 8MB. To play this on retroarch you have to use the core included, a modified genesis plus core, else the game will play a fake low res "mockup". So go to your retroarch cores folder, backup and delete your genesis_plus_gx_libretro.dll and replace it with the one included with the game. After that just load content and find the game .bin.

Download from Repo

Just like the original cart, the first time you boot the rom, you'll see the "simple" game after the language selection screen. Restart the core and it will then boot into the true game.

It expects the file structure to be intact when you load it. At least that's how it worked for me.

Edit: Replacing the RA core with the one from the Repo area of the forum rather than the one in the Repo itself seems to have done the trick. It might have been a fluke so it will require another run.

It's most likely an AP check of some sort. It's far too consistent to be an emulation issue.

Whelp, I got the crash near the beginning of the HQ level too. It was nice to at least be able to finally play the damn thing however.

Hopefully a core that works around the crash will be out soon for platforms other than just Linux. All the better if they get around to fixing the graphical glitches too.

Re: the mp3 files: I was wondering if maybe they couldn't properly dump the music because of the encrypted labyrinth of chips or something. Since the fart noises are still present in the music, it almost seems like someone recorded the game running on a Genesis. The 'round over' fanfare loops awkwardly, too, which I can't imagine the devs being onboard with.

I dunno, the music is decent for coming from a console, but not real-music-that-demands-MP3 good.

Edit: semi-confirmed below, yeah.

Same on Android, does not work with RetroArch I'm tried "so64" and "rs36s" cores on RetroArch (Because different Architecture ARM64/AARCH64)
rebuilding from the stratch will be needed also someone make sonic mania plus run through apk it is unofficial and also zelda harkinian version it is possible.. it ran smoothly with some lag.

ported from pc i guess i need to wait for someone to make it for android

I'm getting a very strange freeze which only happens on the police HQ route.

The craziest part is? You know if it's going to happen shortly because the poster at the start of the level is different! How many anti piracy checks does this game have?!

Like this post more. From what I've seen so far it works and is the least messy solution
Glad it helps. I forgot to mention that it's better to create a per-game option file for "Paprium" ("Quick Menu" -> "Core Options" -> "Manage Core Options" -> "Save Game Options"). This way the two Genesis Plus GX cores won't interfere with each other when you change core options for "Paprium" or other Sega Genesis games .

If you don't want to overwrite your "genesis_plus_gx.dll" core (so you can continue receiving official core updates), you can rename the modified core to something like "genesis_plus_gx_paprium_libretro.dll"

I've been testing it, and it does crash consistently on the Paprium HQ level. Until this is fixed, it is hard to call it a win.

The win will be only if all crucial features will be properly emulated or simulated. For example music is only simulated in it without real time modulation.

Do you know a way to modify Windows cores to MacOS cores - .dll to .dylib?

A question for those who managed to play this dumped version - is the audio working well, sound effects and everything?
As darthvaderx mentioned, there is another archive with an updated version of modified core. It comes with source code and pre-compiled binaries for Windows (x86 & x86_64), Linux (x86_64), macOS (Intel and Apple silicon), amd R36S (ArkOS). I extracted the updated cores from this archive and uploaded them here: https://www.mediafire.com/file/qbmcga5i9470ssp/Paprium_Updated_RetroArch_Core.zip/file

The game rom & mp3 from this archive are the same as the one posted here except there is an extra "paprium.wav" file (It's a bunch of random sound effects. Pretty sure the original uploader forgot to remove it).

There is a test version for macos in dylib already.

It works ok but many features are not simulated properly yet in this combination of emulation and hacking like music modulation as music is based on looped mp3 files which were created by recording music from OG cart which was played on compatible consoles.
