Overrated "Classics"

MOST OVERRATED CLASSIC: Half-Life 2 I guess???

It was a stunning work of art with tech that still impresses to this DAY, but I think the first game was still more fun. The next episodes were much more interesting, but the base Half-Life 2 game sort of disappoints whenever I go back to it and all the other big FPS games from the time are much more fun to play and I still rarely revisit HL2 because of it.

Half-Life 2's ending makes Halo 2's seem like a reasonable place to stop.

The real reason though that I think it's overrated is mostly because Valve is run by greedy bastards who only care about MONEY that they rip off from indie devs with from their horrendous 30% cut on their DIGITAL STOREFRONT MONOPOLY and the only games they even bother making are multiplayer esports titles like DOTA 2 spinoffs and Counter-Strikes and they always stuff them together with a heavy dose of GAMBLING that any other company would be TORE TO BITS in court and in online discussions if they tried it, but Valve can get away with it because they made HALF-LIFE 2 like TWENTY-ONE years ago and people still think they're cool because of it and the only reason they haven't made another sequel is because of some vague "UHHH WE FEEL OUR TECH ISN'T COOL ENOUGH" as if fucking Half-Life Alyx wasn't a technological breakthrough and they're full of shit where is THE SEQUEL ALREADY YOU BASTARDS

Second Half-Life 2. I'm proud of you Valve, I'm glad you are sooo happy about making a physics engine. Try making a good game around it next time.

Half-Life 1 is infinitely better in terms of Design, and the Black Mesa remake just confirmed that for me.

Oh another one for me is Bioshock Infinite.. though I'm not really sure what the consensus on this actually IS any more. At its release though it was heralded as literally one of the best games ever made... and I just.. don't see it.

Poor gameplay with weak guns and limiting systems. A poor story that contradicts itself at its very core. From day one I never understood the popularity.

What games have a reputation as classic, but you think are just plain bad. Mainstream, cult classics, ultra niche. Whatever ya got. I got some I wanna throw out there right away.

- Postal 2: Undeniable charm, sure. I put too much time into it and like it more than I should. But realistically this game is dogshit. No sprint, no music (99% of the time), foul gunplay held up by having healing items everywhere, you're just a bullet sponge with a sexy voice at the end of the day. It's really only fun if you have a soft spot for old PC games, and know where all the hidden goodies are so you can enjoy the better weapons sooner.

- Silent Hill 1 and 2: Early days for the genre, sure. But you'd be amazed at how most horror games even today are terrible. I think these 2 games are the perfect template to showcase why. It's all fine on atmosphere and such. Till you get bored. Once butting against jammed doors and smacking copy/paste monsters with a pipe gets old, you reach the stage where you don't care and wanna get it over with, no fear. But with the clunky movement and tedious obstacles. It's just a big shitty slog through the fog. Fear is not a game mechanic!

- Literally Every "Classicvania" (except Bloodlines): Bloodlines is the most fair and honest. Short but fun and the learning phase is smooth and consistent. Playing as Eric, that's pure ethical gaming right there. However, 1 and 3 are full of Mario Maker troll level BS. 4 starts great but quickly devolves into "bad hard" trickery. Full of slow autoscrolling sections as well. Dracula X really runs with the troll level design. Chronicles will put you to sleep before Belmont can even slither through level 1. I think it speaks to how low standards used to be, how these games are held at such high regard, when ALL of them are shit.

- Devil May Cry: Ugh, it hurts my soul because atmosphere and visual-wise. Easily my favourite in the franchise. I should love this game. But it goes from passable to savage buffoonery real quick. Yeah I know it was 2001, it was the first of it's kind, it wasn't intended to be what it was at first. Listen, I don't care why it's awful, if it's awful, I'm hating on it. The sequel is a famous disaster, and yeah I agree. But honestly I'd prefer 2 over 1. I'd rather a game be too easy than too hard. Especially with the ways DMC1 makes itself so fuckin' hard.

(I know this last one isn't really "retro" but where else am I gonna rant about it.)
- Dark Souls 2: Yeah it's not as beloved as the others but it still brings enough people joy to warrant my infernal hatred. I just don't get it. It's so fuckin' slow! It's held together by duct tape and introduces a lot of the changes from 1 to 3 that I can't stand (not being able to level up wherever and splitting equip load and stamina into different stats). It's gone from being treated like crap, to a lovable autistic middle child. As an autistic middle child, this game sucks!
#BabyAlert Like nah I can't take you seriously when you said you would prefer Devil May Cry 2 over 1 of all things.

Zelda: Ocarina of Time: Is it good? Yes. Is it the undisputed masterpiece without flaws some people claim it to be? No. I know it was revolutionary for its time but aside form mechanics, the story is very lackluster compared to other games released at the time and other Zelda games. To me Majora's Mask should be the one higher rated

every game you like is overrated

I wish. Most of the games and franchises I like are either dead, trapped in copyright hell or abandoned by their developers

None of them because I am always aware of the time period they tended to come from and I try not to accidentally compare one to something made much much later. Like Castlevania as you mentioned, the older games were made in a time where everything had to be difficult or risk never selling. Combine that with the limitations, and you have your bad design. It would be really disingenuous if I compared Castlevania 1 to Symphony of the Night because they have two different things in mind.

Also as a Chronicles enjoyer, Level 1 is easily the weakest in the game. The game actually becomes quite interesting the further you go. Though ironically enough those “bad design” decisions probably apply to Chronicles the MOST, the game’s kinda infamous for it being brutal especially if you’re playing the original mode/X68000. There’s a lot of wonky design decisions when it comes to the game and even I have to admit it.

It’d have to be really unfun in general for me to hate it and as of now I don’t think there’s any retro game like that. Well unless you’re counting the 2000s because Sonic Advance 2 is absolute dogshit in multiple categories and the only reason people give it a pass is because they were playing Ultimate Flash Sonic as a small child. It’s baffling because Sonic Advance 3 gets so much more smoke for things that aren’t even as bad as it’s predecessor.

“Crusher spam”
I’ll take that over the horrendously janky rails over bottomless pits in Advance 2

“The Twinkle Snow boss”
Way more fun and way more doable than 6/7 bosses in Advance 2, that says a lot

“Finding Chao”
What, would you rather scour the individual acts in one go looking for 7 shards and having your progress screech to a halt JUST to play the easiest special stages in Sonic history?

Other than that, the stuff I hate is either stuff everyone hates or it’s a more modern game that doesn’t apply

I don't hate Ocarina of time but it's just "kind of good" to me, nothing more. Every game magazine at the time instantly gave it these crazy 100% scores and I never understood it. Actually don't love A Link to the Past either, it's just alright. Link's Awakening is great, though, and I like Minish Cap.

Love Silent Hill 1 & 2, don't care about GoldenEye but it was groundbreaking since it was the first big console FPS.

In what way? I'm legitimately curious here.

FPS console games... uh... well, they existed before that, but not in a widely recognizable way. more on that later

goldeneye was the first fps console game lots of kids had access to and I think the first big experience most in that era would have had with local multiplayer. kind of second-to-none couch multiplayer for the time. four players being able to play an fps a console with tons of different weapons on a buncha different maps was not really so much a thing before that.

anyway back to the protozoic fps console games, we tried our best to make this work.

Except for postal 2, sounds like a skill issue to me... Also last time I checked ds2 wasn't anywhere near to 'classic'

You consider this 'overrated?' I remember it not being rated very highly to begin with.

I don't think it's BAD, far from it, but man Streets of Rage 2 just does not keep my interest. I get that it has rly in depth combat and a lot of replay-ability with its character roster, but it's level design does nothing for me. Aside from Stage 3 they don't do anything fun or interesting with the locations you go to, and you've seen basically everything the game has to offer by stage 4. After that they just start throwing past bosses at you ad-nauseum /:(. It TECHNICALLY is one of the best ones ever in terms of how much there is to it's combat, but I'd just much rather play games like Violent Storm, Batman Returns, Turtles in Time, Battle Circuit etc. since they simply do more to keep me invested and have much better pacing.

Also I hate playing Contra 4 but that's moreso cause I hate how they implemented the dual screen thing and the lack of proper save files lol.

3rd Strike.

Ain't no one calling this a masterpiece the moment they see that bullshit Gill boss fight.
Well that, and the game ain't as deep or complex as people think. Chun-Li and Yun make this game a miserable experience, and I don't find parries to be that consistent. It's not a bad game, far from it, but it's absolutely not the masterpiece people claim it to be.

I'd say Marvel vs Capcom 2 but the game is like "Reused Assets: The Game", and the soundtrack is really out of place, save for the select screen. Feels like too much of an easy target, everyone knows how broken it is.

Secret of mana is not to my liking. Having to sit there, waiting for the weapon to charge just to make decent damage is boring and getting knocked unconcious while already being unconcious is plain bullshit.

Also, anyone saying Silent hill 1 is not good is mistaken because, obviously, they don't know the pleasure of hitting enemies in the head with the hammer(the best weapon in all of gaming) and seeing them instantly drop to the floor. Furthermore, in SH1, jammed doors are no really much of a thing inside levels, most doors lead somewhere (or at least i remember it like that).

The ones that are glazed the most, I view things from objective point of view (and sometimes I like hating on popular things)

Alright. I like Super Mario 64, it was revolutionary and set up 3D games on its platform. ON IT'S PLATFORM. Seems like the game these days has meat riders out the ass. I think it's a great game, but it wasn't the only 3D platformer that year, and there were better games later on in the N64's lifetime. For me, the game feels floaty and slippery. It's a great game, but I don't herald it as some second coming of Christ himself. Here's the real blasphemy. I like SM64 DS better. I don't think that one feels as slippery, and I think the extra characters add some much needed depth to the gameplay loop.

man just cuz you don't like it don't mean you have the right to downplay it's cultural impact, that's some whack shit. That game hit so hard that SEGA and Sony rushed off their butts to make an analogue controller.

It was very influential, but I don't think it was that great as a game that's all.

I couldn't commit to the joke. If you saw that hope you aren't mad lol. Everyone has a right to their opinions.

I think there's a little misconception of what's considered to be subjective to someone who feels about said game personally and objective to the game's influence on culture

Yeah, I knew what I was saying might upset someone, didn't expect it to happen that quick though. Please man don't take it too harshly, It's just a video game.

Mega Man 2, Sonic 1, Pokémon gen 1, Mario Land 1, Mario RPG, kid Icarus, and most nes RPGs and the nes Zelda games
