Opinions on the ranma remake?

It’s really damn cute

I really don't care for handmade animation being turned into digital
Great mindset and I agree ☝️
But this was one of the few cases I was ok with it

I think it looks ugly as sin, I’m afraid. The colours are really awful and pastel (they kind of make my eyes water), the character designs have that chubby, plushy, overly-simplistic look that all modern anime does, and they even took out the nudity, unforgivably! The show just looks atrocious, and I’m sure it’s far, far worse than the original. (Not that I’ve seen it, I have no need to sit through 20 minutes of this slop.)

Why are they remaking all these shows if they’re not able to meet, let alone exceed, the quality of the source material!? The answer, of course, is because there’s no talent left in the 2020s anime industry. Rumiko and every other mangaka who was popular four decades ago should retire on a beach somewhere and spend the rest of their lives drunk.

LMAOOO
you should hate more stuff
Please make a hate essay on KH please ? we’ll be buds beyond forever

Awful. Same as the Rurouni Kenshin and NGE remake. We don't need em and we don't want them. Just rerelease the originals in higher def formats.

I'm rather enjoying it. Honestly, it's not that different than the original.

Hum, i was going to watch the remake when i had time because i saw the original and loved it. This post made me go take a better look at it and i dont know about the dialog, if is about the same or not, things tend to be sanitized alot these days. But honestly i much prefer the original art style. There is something about the handmade animations from 80s and 90s that really appeals to me!

Literally my thoughts. And I feel the same about most of these recent remakes, like the Urusei Yatsura one.

Its a nostalgia cash grab. Inferior to the original. Just like all the other "remakes"...

Eh it’s not that bad
Unfortunately when it comes to remakes "its not that bad" is an abject admission of failure. A remake will always be compared with its source material and if its at least not on par then its at best pointless at worst it directly damages the original. People tend to always go after the most "recent" version of things, even if they are not the best, so when a newer remake presents some kind of regression it might damage the brand overall.

Think FF7 before and after all the supplementary material(Advent Children, Dirge of Cerberus...). Before the supplementary material nobody really thought of Cloud as a emo wannabe. After it suddenly became his most defining characteristic. Remakes and sequels do affect the overall perception of the whole product. There is nothing to be done about that, its human nature.

Also, its a waste of effort. For video games it makes more sense because we are getting a better engine with updated graphics, but in anime we are literally getting a worse animation technique than the 90's with a censored/edited story for modern sensibilities. Instead we could be getting a new series that at least tries something different. I would even prefer them re-releasing a remastered version of the original and selling it straight up. It would be less offensive than these remakes.

Artstyle is cute

Yes, that would be preferable but also less profitable. The problem with the modern anime industry is that just like the videogame industry it was propped up by creative talent in spite of the upper management rather than because of the upper management.

Even the problems are really similar. Both lack a viable business model that does not rely on some kind of economic anomaly. The game's industry wants to make money not through selling games but through microtransactions. The anime industry does not want to make money from selling anime but rather selling merch.

Both have the exact same problem of cutting out the middle and the bottom segment of the market. Nobody really has the time or money to invest into multiple microtransaction heavy games. Same with anime, nobody is really going to buy a figurine, shirt, light novel or whatever from every anime they watch. Yeah, sure the big fish win big in this setup but everything else just sort of crashes and burns even if it comes up only slightly short.

To put it into more concrete terms it means that nobody really wants to make a new bluray release of OG Ranma that might be less profitable than overpriced merch sold on the back of a brand new shinning remake.

To be fair, this was an absolutely viable business strategy... up until the late 2010s, when anime exploded in popularity outside of Japan and the industry rapidly globalized. I often wonder what the medium would look like now if that never happened and it always remained a niche otaku thing, like it had been in the early part of the 2010s.

If i may Interject, All valid points. Myself as a Old Anime fan, I Rather Like the old hand drawn stuff, i never Cared for the 3D with a Anime Skin slapped over it, just Has that Uncanny Valley effect i guess you would call it.
But...
I Never have a Problem with Remakes, yes i would Rather they Release the OG's in HD, but they aren't going to, For the most part. And somethings when those anime where new, Smoking, Drinking and so on and the Like Don't fly today, their is more than that, but you all know what i mean.

The Remake of Lum wasn't Half bad, i Like the Orig better. but it was Well done. So i think. And hey, if they Fuck over the Remake, not like the Original isn't Still here. Don't Like the Remake? Don't Watch it.
