Oh Outrun, where art thou? I yearn to drift along a banked highway at 180mph in a 60s Ferrari.

Big time Outrun comeback. Would it sink or swim?

  • Yes! No doubt that could pop off if they got serious with it.

I can't be the only one who thinks Outrun could make a promising comeback. A new game that's basically 2006:C2C with some fresh features, new maps (and old, for me) and some new age Ferrari's would go hard. Racers nowadays are so samey. Surely with enough pizzaz and a steady enough stream of unlocks (akin to COD online, but not a battle pass) would make it engaging enough to convince gamers to try it and have themselves a decent lil hit. I'd support it, and I pirate everything these days.

Let's see how good gonna be these new Sega project to revive old franchises, starting with Shinobi.

If they sell as expected to them, I'm almost sure that Outrun could be ressurrected too, maybe not with the Ferrari licensing.

But I don't have any particular familiarity with this game. I only played it through the Like a Dragon/Judgement arcade minigames. 2006 Coast 2 Coast looks nice af tho.

If you're down with emulating. Getting Outrun 2006 on PS2 (because working the old PC port is a huge pain) is so worth it. It's so fresh, so snappy and looks so slick blasting through some beautiful stages. Casino Night is my personal favourite. The old Outrun's are fucking bullshit quarter munchers (I played a loootta Yakuza 0, I had plenty of time with that machine on Nakamichi street) but the 3D ones are just a breeze. Hop in a Testarossa on Outrun mode and enjoy some pure, boots on the ground gaming.

What I love is the personality in this game. Little things like how your girlfriend WAILS on you if you run outta time in Outrun mode. The end credits cutscenes that are different for each path you take. The soundtrack... Duuuude, say what you will, music is subjective. But for me, it's the best flavour of video game music. If I ever get a driving license, I'm screaming "Life was a bore" on my first ride without L plates.

Resurrecting yes but with actual quality and not just nostalgic throwbacks.

This is actually a grip I have with this new Shinobi and with Streets of Rage 4. I see them more as nostalgic products than actual new entries in their series.

Dunno, but I feel a bit different than Mega Man 11 or the newer Monster Boy games to me.

SoR 4 had its own story and managed to have a slightly different gameplay from 1 - 3 but it's a bit too much of a "Streets of Rage 2 Remake" feeling with the fact they removed features added in 3 like running and the "OK bar" for special moves.

Megaman 11 going 2.5D helped but I still prefer the pixel art. Monster Boy was a fully fledged Metroidvania with a map so it wasn't a Dragon's Trap bis.

But then again Beat'em ups are more inclined to be similar...

PS3 outrun works pretty well in PCSX3 on my outdated computer, if you want to play that version, it's an option.

We're getting an Outrun movie, so I'd expect a mobile game that is somehow a watered down version of Namco's Drift Spirits, or even a take off of the now-defunct Tokyo Xtreme Racer mobile game. But I'd love a legit new Outrun. I don't need the licensed cars, though. Gives it more chance of being delisted later.

I love OutRun, it's such a wonderful driving game. I'm very glad Yakuza Kiwami put it in and has the side quest for the score, since I doubt I would've bothered nearly as much otherwise. But I'm wary of the idea of a new game. It's very much an arcade game series (even 2006), and I'm not sure they'd do that justice.

*Swift Google search...*
WHAAAAT!?
Well that's absurd. I'm sure it'll suck. There's definetly a fun mood about C2C, it has a surprising amount of character. Buuut somehow I imagine they're look at a minute of footage from the arcade, and then make there own thing.

I think they’d need to double down on the core concept of the original game: a game about driving with your fiancé, listening to fun music, and going really fast.

If they made it a world where you can just drive around with total free will, maybe interact with other players, and purchase new music and cars from an in-game shop, I think it would be neat. The kind of game where the goal is the basic fun of driving, perhaps with missions designed around performing tricks and goals in the environment.

I’m very VERY excited for Shinobi. But, we must wait and see!

Here’s hoping that it does the old games proud!

I agree with the first part, but the second part is just describing Test Drive Unlimited. Which, I like Test Drive Unlimited 1 a lot, but that isn't what Outrun is. I hope they wouldn't chase that formula, the limited structure of Outrun is part of its appeal, you know?

Fair.
I just miss actual arcade style racing games. The market needs to understand that the core gameplay and aesthetics can make a game worth playing, even if it’s a little content bare.

I agree. Original Daytona is three tracks and it's a blast. Newer Outrun titles had legs through all the modes you could play. Slight twists can go a long way without needing more tracks or 800 cars, though I don't mind games that throw all that at you too. But they can't be both, usually. Arcade mode on a Gran Turismo is like, why?

You mean to tell me… that there’s a console who’s controller has adaptive resistance triggers… and I can’t find a single racing game I’d want to play on it?

Are you kidding me?

I heard there is supposed to be an Outrun movie in the works. Maybe a new game will come of it.
