they aren't just friends per say; mario is the marriage counselor for peach and bowser. most of the time, in exchange for his help whenever they get into a lover's quarrel and he helps settle things down, they help organize party and go kart tournaments along with some sports ones as well. over time, they have become friends, but it will never go any further than that.

If i remember correctly this was changed by Nintendo of America only for the Western market. The original Japanese text says Mario is in love with Peach (again, iirc).

Here is the Japanese character bio:

Translation:
A red hat, blue overalls, and his trademark mustache.
Mario is always cheerful and bright.
He adores Princess Peach and forms a great team with his twin brother, Luigi.
He's a natural at sports, excelling at everything from tennis, baseball, and soccer to even kart racing.
By trade, he's a plumber, but his adventures take him far beyond that.
Using his signature jump and various power-ups, he stands up to his arch-nemesis, Bowser.

A translation note: 大好き (“daisuki”) is translated here as “adores” because while the word suggests strong affection, it is ambiguous whether the meaning is romantic or platonic. This may be intentional.

Allow me to correct myself. The OP text is from the Nintendo of America character bio on Peach. Here is the Japanese equivalent:

And associated translation:
The princess of the Mushroom Kingdom.
She is very kind and always wishes for everyone to live happily.
She loves baking cakes and cooking, and also enjoys trying all kinds of sports.
She and Mario are very close and can always count on each other.
Her pink dress is absolutely lovely.

Honestly I love the headcanon that spawned from this that Peach has wanted to bang Mario for years but Mario either never recognized it or was too pure of heart to be on board. Everytime he saves her she wants to get it on freaky in her bedroom but Mario has the mind of a kindly little bakery running italian man and is just like "no-a I would rather bake-a delicious mushroom rolls and have a lovely dinner with the group :3"

Yeah, this was exactly what i was referring to. To me the wording in the Japanese text is not ambiguous at all considering what we have always seen from Mario in the series. Never seen it as ambiguous. And it's not only the actions/reactions from the characters in-universe, even some classic marketing material pretty much "shipped" them together, for example:

Heck, we don't even need to go as back as the GBA era. This official sticker is pretty recent:

But, i'll be honest: i don't really care that much about the story and character relationships from a game series that is 99.9% gameplay. I just find localization changes that deviate from the original text annoying in general regardless of the medium or the original language.
It's pretty clear that Nintendo of America wanted to make it 100% about "friendship" without a shadow of a doubt, which isn't exactly how the translation should have been handled even if you think the original text is ambiguous. If the people who translated this think the original text is ambiguous (and, again, to me it really isn't), just make the English translation ambiguous too.

Dear Nintendo,

You've been framing up this relationship for 40 years as a romantic one and now, out of the blue, you're saying that Mario and Peach are "just friends"? I have heard some bullshit in my time but this, THIS, is in the top 3 easy. Four decades of Mario and Peach being a thing and now they're "just friends"? What next, Samus isn't a woman? She's just a very effeminate man with boobs, shapely hips, and a very feminine sounding voice?

My point is Nintendo, a'int no one buying your bullshit.

they can never be together as nintendo always resets their universe when they are finally together.......

Wario raided one of Peach's fugazi red-herring unfurnished castle knockoffs that he got from bad flighty autopilot directions written on edible papyrus n claimed he knocked up Peach in the whole bamboozled fiasco of an unprofessional process but apparently Wario thinks the caress of a cardboard cut-out is 3rd, 4th, n 8th base n goes to a Mario & his amazingly tension-packed picnic to braggadocio it up...

but intrepid rotund-o Wario slides down a hill n lands at the picnic uninvited, upside-down n embarassed as shit. Toad Retainer Trainer RPG-er comes up n kicks Wario in the (currently blue AF) balls n Yoshi pukes out a bunch of garbage onto the poor burglary-obsessed bastard n knocks severaL bonus gold coins out that were wedged up his ass.

Mario noticed none of this as he fantasized about dry-bangin Peach using a Koopa sheLL as a very abrasive makeshift condom. Howard & Nester are rollin in their digital graves. Donkey Kong farted. the end

I don't think Nintendo has the power to prescribe your interpretation of a video game. I think we shouldn't give it that power regardless of how you feel about the interpretations it proposes.

No reason to get worked up over some company posting something on a website.

They also tried to erase Mario being a middle aged Italian plumber. Nintendo is weird when it comes to marketing in the west or Japan. I like Mario with a Brooklyn accent or an Italian accent. I like that he's a regular hard working blue collar joe. I like that he has a caring brother and a princess he loves so much that he wants to save her time and again who always invites him for cake. Nintendo should make new content without changing the core of what Mario is. Changing Zelda worked because Zelda is a series that involves time travel and reincarnation. You can do anything you want with that. But the games got more and more linear and needed a reboot of sorts, hence the open world gameplay with countless items and weapons that let you interact with it. It still has an epic story. With Mario though, it's more about traditional gameplay because Mario is literally what put Nintendo on the map. It saved video games. It even ushered in the 3D platformer a decade after that. Mario is timeless. You can experiment like Sunshine, Galaxy, and Odyssey. But the core still stays the same. Mario is Nintendo. Nintendo is Mario. No matter what, they can't change 40 plus years of that.
