Nexus Mods' transfer of ownership

Founder Robin 'Dark0ne' Scott announced the transfer of ownership in a post, officially ending his direct stewardship since launching the site in 2001.

While the identity of the new owner is not public, two long-standing staff members, Foledinho (Victor) and Rapsak (Marinus), will guide the platform's next development phase.

A contributing factor may be the fact that he's been running the site since the golden age of the internet and has had a front row "seat" to watch a steady decline on both traffic and user engagement. That's a morale killer, and a very real thing that has ended many of the best sites around.

Basically, Nexus likes to take down mods that they deem "offensive" (Namely, mods that remove forced DEI, any political messaging or sexy character mods [like the 2B mod for Clair Expedition 33]).

They're also known to be massive hypocrites as they once took down a Marvel Rivals mod that let you play as Donald Trump, yet they allow the Spider-Man 2 pride flag mod.

I'm not a longtime modder, but even now that I'm getting into modding more seriously, I've barely ever touched Nexus. I never cared for their ugly and slightly obnoxious client, and that was well before all the recent purging of wrongthink mods and admin abuse. Add this turn of events and it's going to die in irrelevancy in the next 5 years. Sad to lose a classic internet site, but it can't be helped and they did it to themselves.

Vortex launcher is actually really simple to use and takes a lot of the difficulty out of modding games for those who are computer illiterate. I highly doubt the site is going to go anywhere. If anything I'm assuming they're going to go harder on making premium subscriptions actually worth buying. Right now they're only useful for following modlists.

The modding scene didn't start with the intention of monetary gain, nor do people start actually modding with that intention. Most mods are passion projects. Modders and hacking culture are very similar in the sense of people who make mods with the intention of just making money off it or hiding versions of them behind paywalls are often seen in a negative light.

No, they do, but the subscription served to mostly streamline downloading user modlists. I've never learned how they compensate mod creators or how that compensation is distributed, because the people who want to get into modding for money are a rarity in and of themselves. Modders usually have their own tipjars to begin with which probably give a lot more than whatever Nexus pays out.

Yes indeed. The largest database of mods on the internet, with the most thorough documentation of the creation and evolution of modding culture, should just cease to exist. Because the same dudes who 'really hate politics in their videogames' had their politically motivated mods deleted. Definitely worth binning the whole thing over that for sure.

You really haven't heard anything about how they've been running things there, huh? It's not good to erase internet history, but Nexus has been overtly corrupt - not mismanaged, corrupt - for years now, at least, and that's only from my knowledge as an outsider. Please look into their recent controversy before getting snarky.

I'm not gonna lie, I'm way too old to care about any of the controversies that are a result of egotripping mods or whatever. If any mod had a controversy surrounding its removal, the creator undoubtedly found a way to redistribute it. To be honest, I just realized I've been posting in this thread way too much. I'm gonna stop now since I'm not actually adding anything of value to the conversation and like you said, I started to sound snarky. Which wasn't my intention, by the way. More like banter. But tone is difficult to establish through text sometimes. But heyo, cheers for the conversation, all. I hope for all of us that the future of Nexus bodes well.
